Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Second Baptist Church with Dr. Charles Jones of the church, the Rev. Dan Powers of Northside Assembly of God and the Rev. Clyde Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery under the direction of N.S. Griggs and Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount. Mrs. Allison was born in Wichita, Kan., and raised in the surrounding area. She moved to Amarillo in 1937 from Wichita. She married Herschel L. Allison the same year and they recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. She and her husband owned and operated Allison Blacksmith welding and machine shop from 1942 until 1977 when their son, Bud Allison, took ownership. From 1970 until 1979, they were self-supporting missionaries in Argentina, Paraguay and South America. She was a member of Second Baptist Church and attended Northside Assembly of God. She has spent her life serving the Lord. She was preceded in death by her son, Charles Ray Allison in 1944. Survivors include her husband, Herschel L. "H.L." Allison; three daughters, Glenda Smyth of Amarillo, Shirley Thompson of Riverton, Wyo., and Claudia Nell Price of Amarillo; two sons, Bud Allison of Amarillo and Leland "Shorty" Allison of Tucson, Ariz., one brother, John Wilcox of Kansas City, Mo.; 17 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband Johnnie in 1979. Mrs. Deavenport was the beloved wife of Larry, the beloved first child of Thomas (deceased) and Loretta Zuzich. She was the adored first grandchild of John and Angela Milner (both deceased) and the treasured sister of Tom, Anna, Angela and Ray Hixen, Patricia and Steve Sulaver, Irene and David Wilson and John and Michelle Zuzich. She was the beloved niece of Mary Ann King and Buddy and Barbara Ryder, the cherished aunt of 22 and the great aunt of one. She was the beloved friend of many. She fought cancer bravely and died surrounded by her loving family. She was a gentle and generous soul, with a wonderful talent for playing music. Mr. Sims was a former Amarillo resident and resided for a number of years in the Dallas area. He was born in Galveston. He was a graduate of Amarillo High School and West Texas State University. Mr. Van Bui was born Oct. 5, 1910, in Hai Phong, Vietnam. He married So Thi Pham in Vietnam in 1947. He was a grocery store owner in Vietnam. Mr. Van Bui moved to Amarillo in 1976 from Vietnam. He was a member of Our Lady of Vietnam Church in Amarillo. Amarillo Globe-News, Aug. 16, 2002 Andrew Donovan Weaver Andrew Donovan Weaver, 36, of Plano, formerly of Amarillo, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2002. Memorial services will be held at St. Stephen United Methodist Church in Amarillo at 2 p.m. Saturday under the direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Cremation will follow. Mr. Weaver was born March 3, 1966, in Rochester, Ind., to Lynn Wayne and Patricia Ann Langwell Weaver. He graduated from high school in Hollis, Okla., and received a bachelor's degree in engineering physics from Southwestern Oklahoma State University where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha social fraternity. His hobbies included motorcycle racing, dirt-biking, truck racing, boating, jet-skiing, scuba diving, rock climbing, sky-diving and flying ultralight airplanes. He was a talented artist, video producer and photographer. He was preceded in death by his father, Lynn Weaver, who died Nov. 26, 1973, at age 36, paternal grandfather, Vaughnie Langwell, and aunt, Linda Langwell. She married Leslie Banks on May 24, 1952. Amarillo Globe-News, Aug. 16, 2002 Harry Eugene Brightwell OKLAHOMA CITY - Harry Eugene Brightwell, 69, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at Clarksville Funeral Home in Clarksville. Full military interment will be in Bogata Cemetery. Mr. Brightwell was born June 23, 1933, in Moultrie, Ga., the son of Sable Goff Brightwell and Willie C. Brightwell. He was a much decorated warrant officer who served his country for 24 years in the Army. After his retirement, he enjoyed entrepreneurship and employment with Pantex in Amarillo, where he met his wife Barbara, and Martin Marietta of Paducah, Ky. He was a graduate of the University of Nebraska and loved the Cornhuskers even in the midst of Sooner territory. He enjoyed playing golf with his wife, Barbara, fishing with his brothers and in-laws, Vernon and Lorene Buster, and playing poker and making pranks with his brothers. His three daughters felt fortunate to have been shown most of Europe while he was stationed in Germany for nine years. When they grew up and married he loved spending time with his granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and eight sisters and brothers. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Muster Brightwell; three daughters, Marie Brightwell McMillian, Sandra Lynne Potter and husband, James Kent Potter, Melissa Sable Brightwell; a niece, Patsy Singletary, as well as numerous other nieces and nephews; five grandchildren, Lauren McMillian, Michelle McMillian, Jordan Potter, Julie Potter, Laura Potter; and a step-granddaughter, Meredith McMillian. Burial will be at Citizens Cemetery by Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon. Mrs. Strickland was born Aug. 23, 1913, to Arthur Bethel and Lillian Cooper Bethel in Flomot. She married Vernon Lyle on Oct. 19, 1929. He died Jan. 12, 1938. She married Ray Strickland in 1975 in Center. He died Aug. 25, 2001. She had lived in Tenaha for the past 26 years, moving back to Clarendon following the death of Mr. Strickland. She is preceded in death by a son, Ray Lyle, in January of 1940. Survivors include two daughters, Eva Lee Swinney of Clarendon and Carolyn Hays of La Porte; three sons, Clinton Webb of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Jimmy Webb of Morton, Doyle Webb of Goldthwaite; 13 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren; and 14 great great-grandchildren. Gilkey, 72, of Amarillo died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church of Clarendon with the Rev. James Ivey Edwards, pastor, and Rev. Terry Templen, pastor of Kingswood United Methodist Church of Amarillo, officiating. Burial will be in Citizens Cemetery. Arrangements are by Robertson Funeral Home. Dr. Gilkey was born in Garnett, Kan., and raised in Topeka, Kan. He attended Kansas University in Lawrence, Kan., and the University of Kansas Medical School in Kansas City, Mo. He interned at Hermann Hospital in Houston and practiced medicine more than 33 years in Clarendon and five years in Waxahachie. He was also associated with Baptist Saint Anthony's Health System as a consulting physician for rural health clinics of the Panhandle. Mary Suzanne Blair, 60, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, in Amarillo. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Hill Chapel at West Texas A&M University. Burial will be in Benton, Ark. Arrangements are by Holley Funeral Home Inc. Mary Suzanne Blair was welcomed into this world on July 21, 1942, in Memphis, Tenn. Her parents, Ernie and Edith, nurtured her into a loving, caring, giving person. She stayed close to home finishing high school and earning B.S. and M.A. degrees in physical education from Memphis State University. Throughout those years she participated in basketball, volleyball and her first love, softball. She coached youth teams at her church and with the Parks and Recreation Department of Memphis, Tenn. Suzanne's softball team competed in many women's national softball championships. In 1969, the desire for furthering her education, as well as looking for a new teaching position, caused her to venture west. The summer of 1969 found her in Greeley, Colo., at the University of Northern Colorado to begin work on a doctorate of education degree, which was completed in 1973. She began a legacy of enthusiastic teaching that continued for 32 years until her retirement in January 2001. She loved teaching her classes, be it an activity or graduate level course. Nothing was more important than her students. The cornerstone of her philosophy was "Always put the student first," a principle she practiced and tried to install in the future teachers she sent out into the schools. Her greatest reward was having a student tell her that something they had learned in her class had made a difference in their success as a teacher. She will also be remembered as an outstanding coach in volleyball and golf. She served as president of TAIAW, received the Faculty Excellence Award, was recognized as the Outstanding Thesis Adviser and was selected a President's Teaching Fellow. Once she came west, she never left. She loved Palo Duro Canyon as well as taking the 4-Runner on the mountain back roads and passes of New Mexico and Colorado for their awe-inspiring vistas and beauty. Survivors include her father and stepmother, Ernie and Evelyn Blair of Hernando, Miss.; a sister and her husband, Patty and Jack Simonton of Germantown, Pa.; a brother and his wife, Danny and Vicki Blair of Tijeras, N.M.; an aunt, Barbara Ann Suellentrop of Midwest City, Okla.; lifemate and friend Gayle Jones of Canyon; longtime friend and fellow WT professor, Allene Stovall of Panhandle. Amarillo Globe-News, Aug. 16, 2002 For more than four decades, Dr. Gilkey served the people of Donley County and surrounding areas as their physician, their friend, their church leader and their public servant. In 1997, the Clarendon/Donley County Chamber of Commerce named Dr. Gilkey recipient of the Saints Roost Lifetime Achievement Award. He was on the board of regents of Clarendon College for 22 years and served as president for four years. He also served as mayor for 12 years and was very active in the First United Methodist Church of Clarendon where he served as chairman of the administrative board and in many other capacities. One of his favorites was the Kairos Prison Ministries. Beyond his devotion to his family, he enjoying the passion of piloting airplanes. He served as flight surgeon in the Navy assigned to the Marines. He also was a member of the Texas Flying Physicians Association, serving as secretary-treasurer. Survivors include his wife, Jane, of 39 years; four children, Melinda McAnear and her husband, Ronnie, of Clarendon; Tina Putnam and her husband, David, of Austin, Jim Moore and his wife, Karen, of Albuquerque, N.M., John Moore and his wife, Cathy, of Waxahachie. He also is survived by nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The family suggest memorials be to Clarendon College or First United Methodist Church of Clarendon.
