Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church with Dr. Max Browning, pastor officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Memorial Park by Bartley-Silva Funeral Home. Dr. Harrison was born June 7, 1916, in Timpson and moved at an early age to a farm in southern Hale County. He graduated from Plainview High School, received an associate's degree in arts and sciences from Wayland Baptist College in 1935, a bachelor of arts and sciences degree from Texas Tech University in 1937, a master of arts and sciences degree from the University of Texas in 1939 with majors in English and romance languages, and received his doctorate in education from Texas Tech in 1968. He taught English, Spanish and Latin at Plainview High School from 1939 to 1942 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served as an officer from 1942 to 1946 in World War II and was discharged as a captain. He maintained his commission in the Army Reserve and National Guard, retiring as a major in 1966. After returning to Plainview, he worked as an interviewer and claims adjuster for the Texas Employment Commission from 1946 to 1947. He then taught general science and health at Plainview Junior High School from 1947 to 1950. He was selected as principal of Central Elementary School, serving from 1950 to 1956, was principal of Plainview High School from 1956 to 1958, principal at Estacado Junior High School from 1958 to 1962, and was curriculum director for the Plainview schools from 1962 to 1966 when he became superintendent of schools, serving until 1979. He initiated and implemented a complete school desegregation plan acceptable to OCR-HEW. Dr. Harrison was a member of Plainview Noon Lions Club, on the Advisory Board of the Plainview Salvation Army, on the State Board of Managers of the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers, chairman of the education committee of the Chamber of Commerce, on the board of Central Plains Higher Education Authority, YMCA governing board and was captain of the United Way drive. He was a member of Alpha Chi Honorary Scholarship Society. He received Plainview's Man of the Year Award in 1968 and was in Who's Who in American Education Vol. XXI 1963-1964. On Dec. 7, 1942, he married Bonnie Jean Prycer in Lubbock. She died Aug. 14, 1980. Survivors include two sons, Dr. Boyd Harrison and wife, Nadine, of Princeton Junction, N.J., and Johnny Harrison of Plainview; a daughter, Elizabeth "Libby" Ware and husband, David, of Amarillo; a brother, Billy Harrison and wife, Billie Jean, of Abernathy; a sister Sibyl Mitchell of Rio Rancho, N.M.; and five grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to VistaCare Family Hospice or to the American Cancer Society. Amarillo Globe-News, Aug. 17, 2002 Virginia Kelly Mumau HEREFORD - Virginia Kelly Mumau, 35, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, in Frankel City. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today in Rose Chapel of Gililland-Watson Funeral Home with Ted Taylor, pastor of Herford Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Burial will be in West Park Cemetery. Ms. Mumau was born in Tulia. She was a homemaker. Survivors include her father, Dick Mumau, of Herford; two sons, Ricky Don Burns, of Boys Ranch, and Zachary Mumau, of Muleshoe; a sister, Jeanette Tice, of Hereford; and three brothers, Steve Wade, of Clovis, N.M., Alvis Wade, of Hereford, and Ricky Mumau, of Muleshoe. Amarillo Globe-News, Aug. 17, 2002 Lonnie S. Evans PLAINVIEW - Lonnie S. Evans, 73, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Seth Ward Baptist Church with Jim Ritter officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Cemetery by Wood-Dunning Funeral Home. Mr. Evans worked for the Coca-Cola Company for 52 years until he retired in 1994. He married Wilma Gene Grisham in 1945. Survivors include a daughter, Carmaleta Hooten, of Plainview; a son, Arlen Evans, of Plainview; four brothers, H.C. Evans, of Hereford, Winston Evans, of San Angelo, Herby Evans and Alton Evans, both of Plainview; two sisters, Maurine Selby, of Hereford, and Berniece Donathon, of Wildorado; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to the Heart Association. Amarillo Globe-News, Aug. 17, 2002 Antonia Vasquez HEREFORD - Antonia Vasquez, 64, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, in Amarillo. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday in Parkside Chapel. A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the San Jose Catholic Church with Father Gerado Valasquez officiating. Burial will follow at St. Anthony's Cemetery. Mrs. Vasquez was born May 10, 1938, in San Marcos, the daughter of Juan and Ramona Garcia. She married Miguel Vasquez in 1955 at Rowena. Survivors include four sons, Bobby Vasquez and Miguel Vasquez, both of San Angelo, Alfonso Vasquez of Roundlake, Ill., and Able Vasquez of Hereford; three daughters, Yolanda Rios and Veronica Terry, both of Hereford, and Martha Perez of Oceanside, Calif.; three sisters Betty Carrasco of Hereford, Candy Mendoza of San Angelo and Manuela Fruasto of Hondo; a brother Pete Garcia of Hereford; 22 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, Aug. 17, 2002 New Mexico Alfred "Al" Carter CLAYTON, N.M. - Alfred "Al" Carter, 75, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002. A rosary will be at 1:30 p.m. today and a funeral mass will be at 2 p.m. today in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with Father George Silva, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Clayton Memorial Cemetery by Hass Funeral Directors. Mr. Carter was a lifelong resident of Clayton. He worked at the Farmers and Stockmans Bank and at the Union County Agency prior to his retirement. Survivors include one sister, Agnes C. Brown of Amarillo. Charles Ronald Greenhill ALBUQUERQUE - Charles Ronald Greenhill, 57, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Fern Chapel of Strong-Thorne Mortuary. Burial will follow at Sandia Memory Gardens. Mr. Greenhill was a master mason of Saffordville Lodge 395 in Saffordville, Kan. Survivors include his wife, Lorna Sears Greenhill; parents, Vernon and Doris Greenhill of Albuquerque; a son, Charles Robert Greenhill of Amarillo, Texas; and two grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to the Presbyterian Hospital Hospice. Amarillo Globe-News, Aug. 17, 2002. Amarillo Ruby Dell Goodwin Ruby Dell Goodwin, 84, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002. A memorial service will be at a later date. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mrs. Goodwin was born Aug. 18, 1917, in Hedley, to John and Ollie Aldridge. She had been a longtime resident of Amarillo. She married LeRoy Goodwin in 1942 in Memphis. She graduated salutatorian from Hedley High School and attended Amarillo College. She and her husband owned and operated LeRoy's Watch and Gun Shop in Amarillo for 40 years. She also worked at Northwest Texas Hospital and was a home care provider. She was a Girl Scout leader and nursery and pre-school Sunday school teacher. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the NRA. She was a woman of deep faith, a skilled artisan and pianist, and a devoted wife and mother. She will be dearly missed by her family and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Lena May Harkness. Survivors include a son, Kenneth Goodwin of Winchester, Va; a daughter, Carolyn Thurmon and husband, Bill, of Amarillo; a sister, Jonnie Schaffer of Del Norte, Colo.; two beloved grandchildren, Katherine Saideman of Dollard des Ormeaux, Quebec and Elizabeth Berry of Burke, Va.; three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Elsewhere Virgil Ray Romack Virgil Ray Romack, 78, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002. Graveside services will be at noon Tuesday in Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements are by Palm Mortuary in Henderson. Mr. Romack was a retired owner of a liquor store. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and served in World War II. Sam Kennedy ROARING SPRINGS - Sam Kennedy, 79, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, in Amarillo. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Roaring Springs Baptist Church with Walt Arnold, of Silverton, officiating. Burial will be in Dickens Cemetery in Dickens by Seigler Funeral Home of Matador. Mr. Kennedy was a retired professional rodeo performer. He graduated from high school in Aspermont and had lived in Arizona, Oklahoma and Channing. Survivors include his wife, Donna; two daughters, Mariann Cannon of Atoka, Okla., and Debbie Kennedy-Mott of New Richland, Wash.; a son, Dean Kennedy of Pelkie, Mich.; a sister, Ann Halbedl of Ruidoso, N.M.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
