Boren Jr., in 2000; a sister; and a brother. Davis, 63, of Amarillo died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First Baptist Church with Dr. Howard Batson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Mr. Davis was born and raised in Amarillo. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1957, where he was a three-year letterman for T.G. Hull's Sandie basketball team. He attended University of Colorado, Amarillo College and graduated from University of New Mexico in 1962. He then joined his father, Mark Davis Sr., in the operation of Tepee Western Store at 411 Polk St. The store later relocated to the old Amarillo Hotel at Third Avenue and Polk Street and became one of the largest and best known western stores in the southwest. In 1976, he received the Windy Ryon Memorial Award for outstanding western retailer. He became active in real estate in 1978 when he established Tepee Land Co. In 1983, he joined Coldwell Banker First Equity as a commercial real estate broker. He was recognized several times as the company's commercial salesman of the year. He served as president of the Tri-State Fair Association, director of Amarillo Chamber of Commerce and director of Golden Spread Quarter Horse Association. He was co-founder and first president of The Outfit. In 1998, he was recognized by the Texas Agriculture Extension Service for his longstanding service to 4-H programs. During the 1970s, he served as captain of the Potter County Sheriff's Reserves. He married Janie Singleton in 1996. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Paige Bustoz and husband, Joe, of Amarillo; three sons, Darin Davis and wife, Brenda, of Green Bay, Wis., Cas Singleton of Greeley, Colo., and Matt Singleton and wife, Shelley, of Amarillo; and two grandchildren, Jase Bustoz and Jordan Bustoz. She married L.W. Heath in March 1970. She was preceded in death by two sons, Lyle and Anthony. Survivors include her husband, L.W. Mr. Chandler served in the Navy and in World War II. He was a truck driver until his retirement in 1988. Amarillo Globe-News, Aug. 21, 2002 Elsewhere J. Lee Johnson III FORT WORTH - J. Lee Johnson III, 84, died Sunday, August 18, 2002. Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. today in Holy Family Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Pemberton officiating. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Thompson's Harveson & Cole Funeral Home. Of his many civic activities, Mr. Johnson was perhaps best known for more than a decade of work that led to the creation of Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. He served on the first D/FW Airport Board, resigning in 1976. He had practiced law with Cantey, Hanger, Johnson, Scarborough & Gooch and was president of Cicero Lumber Co. before taking the reins of Carter Publications, then the Star-Telegram's parent company, in November 1961. At the time, Carter Publications included the newspaper and WBAP television and radio. Jack Tinsley, retired editor and vice president, said he brought strong management skills to the position of vice president and general manager. "Johnson was effectively in charge at the paper," Tinsley said. "He was a good manager and a good businessman and was well respected in the community." He was the former son-in-law of Star-Telegram founder Amon G. Carter Sr. He was married to Ruth Carter (now Stevenson) from 1946 to 1977. He married Betty Knight Kritser in 1978. He resigned from Carter Publications in February 1968. Later that year, he was named executive in residence and professor of management at Texas Christian University. Among the boards he served on were the Texas Law Enforcement Foundation, the Fort Worth Park Board, Fort Worth Children's Hospital (now Cook Children's Medical Center), Saint Joseph Hospital, the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show, the Lumbermen's Association of Texas and the Better Business Bureau. Gov. Allan Shivers appointed him to the board of regents of University of Texas in the late 1950s. He was born Feb. 4, 1918, in Fort Worth to Katherine Lehane and J. Lee Johnson Jr., whose business interests included lumber, oil and banking. He graduated from the old Central High School and attended Kemper Military Academy and Texas Christian University before World War II. He enlisted in the Army as a private and served for 5 years, rising to the rank of major. In 1949, he was valedictorian of his law school class at the University of Notre Dame. Along with Bayard Friedman and H.B. Fuqua, he is credited with negotiating in the 1960s an agreement between Fort Worth and Dallas to build D/FW Airport. The trio received the Exchange Club's Golden Deeds Award in 1966. He loved golf, building model railroads, reading, listening to music and reading to children at Charles E. Nash Elementary School, son J. Lee Johnson IV said Monday. "This is a great loss," said Paul R. Ray, a businessman and a longtime friend. "He was a guy with a great sense of humor. Even though very ill with a stroke, he never lost his sense of humor." Honorary pallbearers include Frank Bailey, Perry Bass, Preston Geren Jr., Jack Henkels, Eric Hyden, Raymond Kelly, Paul Ray Sr., Walter A. Schmid, Jack Schutts, Tom Seymour, Earle A. Mrs. Blalock was born June 22, 1911, in Henrietta. She was a homemaker. She had lived in Wichita Falls since 1978, moving from Hurst. She was a member of Lamar Baptist Church in Wichita Falls. She went everywhere with her husband while he was working for the Rock Island Railroad. She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Blalock on Feb. 20, 2001. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Merriman was born Sept. 23, 1934, in Beaver, Okla., to John N. and Bonnie McKee Merriman. In 1956 she received her bachelor's of science in speech therapy and education, in 1977 she received her master's degree in library science and in 1983 she received her Ph.D in library and information science, all from Texas Woman's University. She was a speech therapist in the California school system. She was the supervisor of libraries in Amarillo Public Schools and was a librarian for Fort Worth Public Library. Beginning in 1979, she was a media consultant and librarian for General Dynamics and continued with Lockheed. Survivors include her mother, Bonnie Merriman of Denton; and her friend, Dr. Barbara Palling of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
