He married Goldie Finley on Aug. 21, 1941, in McLean. Her mission in life was to minister to people. She was a teacher, a spiritual leader, witness, neighbor and a friend to all. He married Dorrene Browning on April 25, 1948, in Rotan. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 13, 2002 George William Hohmann WAKA - George William Hohmann, 78, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, in Tucson, Ariz. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Waka Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Lowry officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Perryton. Mr. Hohmann was born Dec. 30, 1923, in Waka. He was raised in Waka and Perryton during the Dust Bowl Days. He subsequently attended West Texas State College and Ohio State University before the second World War. He married Pauline Cook. A veteran of World War II, he served in the 102nd infantry division, Army, in Europe and was paralyzed by a combat wound. He was a life member of the 102nd Infantry Division Association, plus a founding member of Paralyzed Veterans of America and the Spinal Cord Research Foundation of the PVA. He was a life member of Disabled American Veterans. After the war, he attended University of California, Los Angeles, where he received bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology. He was the former chief, psychology service, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Tucson and was also professor emeritus of psychology at University of Arizona at Tucson. He was a member of American Psychological Association, Arizona Psychological Association, past president, and the UCLA Alumni Association. He was a member of First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ in Tucson. Survivors include his wife; a son, John Hohmann; a daughter, Ann A. Hohmann; a granddaughter, Alena Ann Kuhlemeier; a sister, Wilma Williams of Berryville, Ark.; a niece, Cheryl Weintraub; a nephew, Michael Gibson; two cousins, Peggy Cudd and Johnnie Luthi, both of Perryton; and a grandchild. She was a teller at First National Bank in Panhandle for more than 20 years. She was a graduate of Panhandle High School in 1931. She was a member of First Christian Church. She was also a volunteer at Carson County Square House Museum and a member of Mother's Club. Cox, 86, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, in Amarillo. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Miami United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Kinder, pastor, and the Rev. Tom Stribling, pastor of Hunt Memorial Methodist Church of Dumas, officiating. Burial will be in Miami Cemetery by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Pampa. Mr. Cox was born Oct. 19, 1915, in Wheeler County. He attended school in Miami and then entered the Army Air Corps, serving from 1942 to 1945 during World War II. He returned to Miami where he owned a Mobil service station for 25 years. He served as Roberts County Commissioner and Roberts County Judge for a number of years. He was involved in several elected-official associations in Miami and also served as mayor of Miami. He married Modenia Airhart Rahlfs on Oct. 20, 1992, in Miami. They lived in Miami until moving to Amarillo in 1997. He was a member of American Legion, Chamber of Commerce and was on the advisory board of Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of United Methodist Church of Miami. Survivors include his wife; two stepdaughters, JaNet Lindsey of Abernathy and Jean Boyles of Amarillo; a stepson, Lloyd Rahlfs of Happy; a sister-in-law, Mary Cox of Miami; and several cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 13, 2002 Joel William Griffith Joel William Griffith, 81, of Amarillo died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jeff Conway, pastor, and the Rev. Marty Loberg, associate pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Mr. Griffith was born in Muskogee, Okla., and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from University of Arkansas with a degree in engineering. He received his master of science from West Texas State University. He was the general manager for Travelers Insurance in Arkansas before moving to Amarillo in 1961, where he owned and operated Cooper-Griffith Real Estate and owned an insurance agency. He later taught physics at Texas State Technical Institute in Amarillo for 13 years. He was a former member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, where he served on many boards including the administrative board. He was currently a member and elder of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Mended Hearts Chapter No. 54 and Khiva Temple, where he was active in the Oriental Band and Mobile Nobles. He married Jean Thomas on Nov. 3, 1984, in Amarillo. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia in 1983. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Joel William Griffith Jr. and wife, Marie, of Westminster, Colo., and Gary Griffith of Amarillo; three stepdaughters, Kathy Kosechata and husband, Darrell, of El Reno, Okla., Pat Wannamaker and husband, Ken, of Richardson and Bobbie Hyndman and husband, Chris, of Amarillo; a stepson, James T. Clyde and wife, Lucy, of Amarillo; two brothers, M.L. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mrs. Carr married Bob Carr in Amarillo on April 9, 1948. Due to her small stature, she was lovingly referred to as "Little Bit" or "Bit" by her family members and closest friends. Joining her husband as firm believers in the importance of early childhood learning, Nell read, sang and played music to her children before their births and throughout their elementary grades. She taught her children how to read and write before entering elementary school. Nell enthusiastically worked with each of her children to increase their reading levels, comprehension, vocabulary and math and science skills. She played a vigorous role in each of her child's kindergartens as a teacher or assistant, and in each of their Parent Teacher Associations as a member or chair. She taught Sunday school to children of varying grade levels and helped with her church's nursery. Both her husband and Nell played active roles in the Boy and Girl Scout Associations of America. Nell continued her child advocacy through serving as a volunteer for free child immunizations. An avid researcher, Nell was a lifelong advocate and supporter of children, women and human rights, wildlife protection and school reform. Remarkably intelligent, vibrant, humorous, compassionate, thoughtful, sincere and altruistic, our loving mother, grandmother and wife's death leaves a void that will never be filled. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Sheryl Carr of Amarillo; a son, Browder Michael Carr of Salt Lake City; a sister, Helen Gray of Amarillo; and a grandson, William Michael Carr of Atlanta, Ga.
