"Slim" Britten PANHANDLE - A.J. "Slim" Britten, 88, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, in Amarillo. Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. today in St. Theresa's Catholic Church with Monsignor M.J. Mathiesen officiating. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the church with the Rev. John Dalton officiating. Burial will be in Panhandle Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home of Amarillo, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Britten was born in Groom on July 11, 1914. He was known as "Slim" to both Groom and local neighbors and was the oldest Britten living upon his death. He lived several years "on the creek" as he called it between Spearman and Gruver before moving to Conway in October 1946. He raised registered Hereford cattle for a number of years. He was a farmer and rancher. He had a great love for animals and enjoyed greeting the many visitors to his small zoo. He welcomed the area school children on field trips to his zoo where they learned from the variety of fowl and animals as well as the many travelers that stopped by while traveling on Highway 207, Route 66 and Interstate 40. He was a game breeder, licensed with the Parks and Wildlife Department. His love of acquiring new animals led to the trade of many of his stock to various zoos throughout the country. In 1955, he began raising a buffalo herd and continued to do so until his death. His herd was used as the mascot for then West Texas State University in Canyon. He and his herd were pictured in the Amarillo Daily News in the business section in October 1990. He was a member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Panhandle and a charter knight with the Pampa Knights of Columbus. He married Bertha Marie Wink of the St. Francis Community in Potter County on Feb. 19, 1941, at St. Francis Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his wife on Nov. 7, 1998. Survivors include three sons, John M. Britten and wife, Linda, of Claude, Fred Britten and wife, Donna, of Panhandle and Louis Britten of Panhandle; seven grandchildren, Michelle Avaritt of Cedar Hill, Melissa Britten of Carrollton, Kelvin Britten of Claude, David Britten, Justin Britten and Cynthia Britten, all of Amarillo, and Regina Lingenfelter of Fort Irwin, Calif.; and two great-grandchildren. He was a farmer. He was born June 29, 1950, in Colorado City. He married Randie Kelley on June 11, 1971, in Friona. He was a member of First Baptist Church and served as usher for many years. From 1979 to 1996 he was active in Friona Kids, Inc. He served on the credit committee of Friona Texas Federal Credit Union and also served on the board of directors of Friona Wheat Growers. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Memorial Park Cemetery of Amarillo. Arrangements are by Vega Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home. Mrs. Key was born in Roll, Okla. She graduated from Hardesty High School in 1936 and was a student at the Amarillo Conservatory of Music and the St. Louis School of Music. She taught piano in Amarillo from 1956 to 1982 then in Vega from 1982 to 2000. She was a member of the Amarillo Music Teachers Association and played the organ at Christ Lutheran Church of Amarillo for many years. She married Murrell Key in November 1938 in Amarillo. She was preceded in death by her husband on Sept. 22, 1972. Survivors include a son, Ronald Key and wife, Barbara, of Lawton, Okla.; a daughter, Becky Groneman and husband, Mark, of Vega; a brother, Jess Shugart and wife, Bonnie, of Gladstone, N.M.; an especially close granddaughter, Stacy Gjerde and husband, Ron, and their child, Madison Joye; and seven other grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1986; two brothers, Gene Caughey and Avery Caughey; and four sisters, Vergie Wilder, Alice McGlaughin, Doris Riley and Gladis Caughey. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Rowe Cemetery of Hedley. Mrs. Kirkland was born on Oct. 12, 1912, in Okmulgee, Okla. She married Curtis Kirkland at Lakeview in January 1934. She owned and operated her farm in Hedley. She enjoyed driving the tractor, plowing and planting. She also worked at a sheet factory in Memphis for several years starting in 1961. She moved to Amarillo in 1980. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Hedley. She was preceded in death by her husband in May 1978. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 22, 2002 Phyllis Moylan Phyllis Moylan, 83, of Amarillo died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Llano East Cemetery with the Rev. Mrs. Moylan was born in Oklahoma and raised in Missouri. She had been a nurse in the Navy where she met her husband, Patrick D. Moylan. They had been married almost 50 years when he died in August 1995. She had also worked in child care in New York before moving to Amarillo in 1986. She was a loyal and special friend and will be deeply missed. She loved to sit down, have a drink and tell her stories. She was a Christian. Survivors include two nieces, Sharon and Michelle; three nephews, John, Patrick and Edward; a sister-in-law, Helen Moylan; a brother-in-law, Edward Moylan; and a special young man, Brandon. Jackson, M.D. LUBBOCK - Francis C. Jackson, M.D., 85, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002. Memorial services were at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, in W.W. Rix Funeral Directors Chapel. Dr. Jackson was born in Rutherford, N.J., on Sept. 2, 1917, to Frank E. and Margaret Kuhn Jackson. He was educated at The Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J., where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Peddie News and second baseman on the 1934/1935 team. He was a graduate of Yale University and the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He served his surgical internship and residency in New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and was chief resident there. He served in the Navy on active duty during World War II and the Korean War and resigned from the service as a Lt. Cmdr., (M.C.) in 1955. From 1956 until 1970, he served at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine finishing as Professor of Surgery and served in Washington, D.C., with The Veterans Administration Central Office until 1975. In that year Dr. Jackson came to Texas at the invitation of the Texas Tech University School of Medicine, to be its first full-time chairman, Department of Surgery. Dr. Jackson founded and directed the residency program in surgery at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Dr. Jackson also authored many papers in the surgical literature. Some of his memberships include: The American College of Surgeons, The American Surgical Association, The Texas Medical Association; Lubbock-Crosby-Garza County Medical Society; Lubbock and Texas Surgical Associations; and Society Internationale de Chirurgie. He also directed the Lubbock and South Plains E.M.S. and the United Way Campaign at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. He was a proud member of the Lubbock Rotary Club. He was married for 53 years to Joan Mortenson. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Geoffrey P. Jackson of Charlottesville, Va., Bradford M. Jackson of Lubbock and Gregory C. Jackson, M.D. of Burlingame, Calif.; a daughter, Donna E. Jillson of Coppell; a brother, Martin A. Jackson of Exeter, R.I.; and six grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to the Francis C. She was on the Board of ECW at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, a member of the State Bar of Texas and a former associate at Vinson & Elkins, LLP. She was preceded in death by her father, D.M. Cogdell Jr.; and her father-in-law, William R. Courtney.
