Austin, 69, of Amarillo died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Paramount Terrace Christian Church. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Jester Cemetery in Jester, Okla. Local arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Oklahoma arrangements are by Carter Stewart Funeral Service in Mangum, Okla. Dr. Austin was born in Jester on July 17, 1933. She graduated valedictorian of Reed High School in 1951. She received her bachelor's degree in home economics from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, and her master's degree in home economics and her doctorate degree in psychology, both from University of Oklahoma. Dr. Austin began her teaching career in several small school districts in Oklahoma before moving to Amarillo in 1955. She taught at Horace Mann and Sam Houston junior high schools before joining Amarillo College in 1969. Her professorship at Amarillo College lasted 33 years during which she instructed courses in nutrition, marriage and family, home economics and many others. Zuma's primary love was teaching students and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was truly loved by all who knew her and will be dearly missed. Dr. Austin attended numerous seminars and conferences in her discipline and was active in Texas Association of Family and Consumer Service, the American Dietetic Association, Texas Community College Teachers Association, Panhandle Dietetic Association and Delta Kappa Gamma professional group. Survivors include her husband, Dr. David C. Austin; a son, Tony S. Austin of Dallas; a daughter-in-law, Christi Austin of Dallas; and two grandchildren, Slaton Austin and Kaleigh Moore. The family suggests memorials be to Dr. Zuma S. Austin Scholarship Fund, in care of Amarillo College, P.O. Box 447, Amarillo, TX 79178-0001. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 28, 2002 Josephine Estella Attebury Prescott Josephine Estella Attebury Prescott, 45, of Amarillo died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, in Stephenville. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Howard Batson, senior pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Mrs. Prescott was born May 29, 1957, in Amarillo, to Sam and Julie Attebury. She lived in Dublin the last four years. Josephine graduated from Amarillo High School in 1974 and attended University of Texas at Austin, receiving an undergraduate degree in political science. Josephine was a loving daughter, mother, sister and friend to all who really knew her. Her family and friends will dearly miss her. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Julianne Noel Prescott. Survivors include a son, Zane Prescott of Amarillo; her parents of Amarillo; and a sister, Suzanne Boyce of Amarillo. The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 28, 2002 Houmpheng Phimphisane Houmpheng Phimphisane, 79, of Amarillo died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002. Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Martin Road Chapel, 1505 Martin Road, with Buddhist Monks officiating. Cremation will be by Memory Gardens Crematory. Mr. Phimphisane moved to Amarillo 11 years ago from Laos. He was a retired farmer. Survivors include three daughters, Somdy Sanith of Amarillo, and Vansy Chanthavong and Samchanh Pattamavong, both of Laos; and 12 grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 28, 2002 Kenneth R. Starbird Jr. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Schooler Funeral Home Brentwood Chapel, 4100 S. Georgia St. There will also be a celebration following the service at the home. Mr. Starbird was born in 1951 in Detroit. After graduation from Hiland Park High School, he served as a medic in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He returned to Michigan and graduated as a registered nurse. He retired as an intensive care nurse after 20 years of service. He served one year in Kaui, following the Iniki hurricane disaster. He was a caring and loving father, and friend to many others. He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice Rausch. Survivors include his wife, "The Angle" Maryann; his father, Kenneth R. Starbird Sr.; a sister, Karen Mendez of Cool, Calif.; two daughters, Amy Thompson of Pottsboro and Dena Newell of Keller; three granddaughters, Nichole, Ashley and Halle; a grandson, Maxon; six adoptees, Sam, Mamie, Stacy, Cleo, Sable and Pookie; and two nephews. Services will be at 3 p.m. today in Salem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Thad Collier officiating. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery by Sykes Funeral Home and Crematory. Mrs. Stone was born Nov. 29, 1946, in Clarksville. She attended Salem United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, Andrew Stone of Martinez, Ga.; a daughter, Karen Elaine Stone of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, Joseph G. Picard of Key West, Fla.; a sister, Elaine Picard Burgess of Pleasant View, Tenn.; and a grandchild. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 28, 2002 Lawson Havins PADUCAH - Lawson William Havins, 81, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First Baptist Church with the Rev. James Mantooth, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Paducah Garden of Memories Cemetery by Seigler Funeral Home. Mr. Havins was born May 23, 1921, in Finney. He married Henrietta Smith on Jan. 7, 1944, in Hollis, Okla. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Linda Rush and Kay Truelock, both of Guthrie, and Fay Nix of Pittsburg, Texas; a son, Don Havins of Amarillo; a brother, Chester Havins of Paducah; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 28, 2002 Tommy Lee Osborn CLAUDE - Tommy Lee Osborn, 59, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Claude Church of Christ with Kent Watson officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Spring Creek Cemetery in Weatherford with Murphy Phillips officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home Armstrong Chapel. Mr. Osborn was born in Bryan on Oct. 27, 1942. He was raised in Claude, where he began farming in high school. He attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture education in 1965, and a bachelor of science degree in entomology in 1967. He served in the Navy in Pensacola, Fla., training as a naval pilot. He married Barbara Binion on July 15, 1967, in Weatherford. He was a member of Lion's Club, director of Claude Co-op and was Church of Christ treasurer for many years. He was a member of Armstrong County Museum. He was a soil conservation farmer of the year in 1977, and took first place in state for grain sorghum in 2002. He was also a private pilot. He was preceded in death by his parents, Morris and Mildred Osborn; and his grandparents, Tom and Rentie Osborn. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Lisa Chantal Osborn of Plano; a son, Aaron Binion Osborn of Lubbock; a brother, Randy Osborn of Claude; a nephew, Jimmy Osborn of Claude; and three other nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorials be to Claude Church of Christ; or Armstrong County Museum.
