Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Polk Street United Methodist Church Chapel with Dr. Jim Garrett officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Pennington began his journey on Jan. 19, 1952, when he had the good fortune to be born into the Pennington family, which consisted of Bob and Willa Pennington and their children, Don and Cynthia. Little sister, Karla, later completed the family. Gary graduated from Wichita Falls High School and soon after began employment at Burlington Northern Railroad. He soon advanced in his career to locomotive engineer. Gary met his soulmate, Patty, in Amarillo and they were married in the rose garden at Memorial Park on May 15, 1977. Gary adopted Patty's daughter, Cori, and their family grew with the birth of Michael in 1981 and Sara in 1983. Railroad life was not easy, but Gary and Patty's love for family and home resulted in strong family ties and happy memories from family celebrations and trips. He cherished not only his family of origin, but also his adopted Comstock/Warren family. He was very creative and enjoyed landscaping and carpentry. In his last six years, he discovered a talent for and love of woodcarving. Our home was always open to our children's friends, many of whom became our friends as well. We enjoyed our titles of "Aunt Patty and Uncle Gary." Gary's journey began a long uphill climb when he was diagnosed with brain cancer in July 2001. He fought bravely with the help of family, friends and our excellent Harrington Cancer Center. Gary and Patty reaffirmed their faith this last Easter and joined Polk Street United Methodist Church. Their 25th anniversary was celebrated at the site of their original marriage. They renewed not only their marital, but family vows as well. The best party of their lives followed the vows and reflected their celebration of life, love, family and faith. Gary's journey lasted 50 years and ended Oct. 2, 2002. He was a good man, a considerate and loving husband, and a strong devoted father. We know his journey ended at the gates of Heaven. Although we will miss him terribly, we know that he will always be with us. His journey ended in God's arms. He was preceded in death by his father in 1983; and his sister, Cynthia, in 2001.
