"Foots" Clements, who drove a delivery truck for Dr Pepper while in college and eventually became chairman of the soft drink company, died Thursday from complications of dementia. He was 88. Clements, an Alabama native, started working for the company in July 1935. He was chairman emeritus and maintained an office at the Dr Pepper/Seven Up Inc. headquarters in suburban Plano until he was hospitalized Sept. 25. In 1942, Clements began working as a zone sales manager for Dr Pepper, working with bottlers in Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Two years later, he was promoted to the company's Dallas headquarters. Clements became president and chief operating officer in 1969 and chairman of the board in 1974. He was chairman until 1986 and a director until 1995. Lorian L. Marlantes NEW YORK (AP) - Lorian L. Marlantes, president of Rockefeller Group International, a corporation with holdings in commercial real estate and telecommunications, died Saturday after a long illness. He was 59. Marlantes held executive positions with the Exxon Corporation and the Penn Central Corporation before joining the Rockefeller group as a vice president for strategic planning and analysis in 1982. In 1990 he was appointed head of the subsidiary that manages Rockefeller Center in midtown Manhattan. In 1995 he was named president and chief executive of Rockefeller Group International. During his tenure, Marlantes looked to increase the company's commercial real estate interests beyond the midtown complex. Aileen Saunders Mellott ESCONDIDO, Calif. (AP) - Aileen Saunders Mellott, a co-founder of the Flying Samaritans charity who was one of the nation's top female aviators, died Sept. 25 of pancreatic cancer. She was 76. Mellott earned her private pilot's license in 1956 and shortly thereafter joined the Ninety-Nines, an organization for women pilots. In 1959 and 1960, she won the Powder Puff Derby, an all-woman transcontinental air race in which she competed seven times. She was named pilot of the year by the National Pilots Association in 1961 and won the International Air Race for women in 1962. Mellott also established the Flying Samaritans, a group that brings volunteer doctors and other professionals to communities in Mexico. The Flying Samaritans now has 12 chapters in California, Arizona and Baja California, Mexico. John Weitz NEW YORK (AP) - John Weitz, a fashion designer who later became a novelist and historian, died Thursday. He was 79. Weitz was among the first American fashion designers to enter licensing deals in the 1950s. He put his name on socks, neckties and men's fragrances, gaining a reputation as a clever businessman. Weitz broadened his career to write fiction and nonfiction books. Born in Berlin, Weitz penned such books as "Hitler's Diplomat: The Life and Times of Joachim von Ribbentrop"; "Hitler's Banker"; "Man in Charge"; "Friends in High Places"; and "The Value of Nothing." Weitz was in the process of rewriting a novel about the life of German boxing great Max Schmeling. Annie Hamilton NEWLIN - Annie Hamilton, 94, of Newlin died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002. Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Newlin Cemetery with the Rev. Gary Boles officiating. Burial will be at the cemetery by Hughs Funeral Home of Memphis. Mrs. Hamilton was born Aug. 28, 1908 in Munday. She married Luke Hamilton in Hollis, Okla., in 1924. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Estelline. Survivors include a brother, Roy Gresham of Newlin; a sister, Bee Berryman of Lubbock; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorials to the Newlin Cemetery, P.O. Box 14, Estelline, TX 79233. Amarillo Globe-News, Oct. 5, 2002 Nellie Mae Lackey SHAMROCK - Nellie Mae Lackey, 92, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, in Wheeler. Services will be at 3 p.m. today in 11th Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Drew Travis, pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Plainview, officiating. Burial will be in Shamrock Cemetery by Wright Funeral Home. Mrs. Lackey was born on May 31, 1910 to Linton C. and Nora Carver Beaty in Wheeler. She was valedictorian of her Wheeler High School class of 1928 and lived all her life in Wheeler County. She married Jessie Lee Lackey on May 5, 1929, in Wheeler. She graduated from Draughon's Business College in Fort Worth and worked in the Wheeler County courthouse for several years. She was a devout Christian and taught Sunday school classes at the Twitty Baptist Church and in Samnorwood for many years. Mrs. Lackey was a lover of poetry. She also worked as a cook in the Samnorwood school and Shamrock Nursing Home. She was a member of the 11th Street Baptist Church and the Samnorwood Home Demonstration Club. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984. Survivors include four sons, Allen Lackey and wife Debbie of Bluefield, W.Va., Carrol Lackey and wife JoAnn of Fort Worth, Jerry Lackey and wife Marian of Hallettsville and Joe Lackey of Amarillo; a daughter, Rita Pearson and husband David of Canadian; three sisters, Frankie Franks and Vivian Dodson, both of Houston, and Imogene Clay of Canyon; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to Crown of Texas Hospice. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors Bell Avenue Chapel, 5400 S. Bell St., with David Emmons officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Miller was born Oct. 26, 1957, in Amarillo, to Jack and Polly Barnett. She was a graduate of Amarillo High School in 1975. She attended Amarillo College and taught classes in banking. She was a teller and branch manager of First National Bank until 1995. She had been a volunteer for MS Beef-A-Thon, MS Walk-A-Thon and the Canadian Bike-A-Thon. She was preceded in death by a brother, Gary Barnett in 1993; her mother in 2000; and her father in 2001. Survivors include her husband, Donald; two daughters, Christi Milligan Emmons and husband, David, of Slaton and Vanese Milligan Pierson and husband, Jared, of Lubbock; a sister, Linda Henry and husband, Pat, of Amarillo; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Moore, 95, of Amarillo died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, in Tulia. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mrs. Moore enjoyed volunteering in numerous organizations while in California and Texas. She was very active in the Baptist church. She enjoyed cooking and entertaining others. She loved her family and they were very important to her. She married Ralph Moore in 1927, when she was living in Oklahoma. Preceding her in death were her husband in 1971; three sons, Dale and Gale Moore of Amarillo and Herbert Moore of Norman, Okla.; and one granddaughter, Brenda Mendoza of Norman, Okla. Survivors include a son, Kenneth "Kenny" Moore of Amarillo; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren. Arrangements are by Sunrise Cremation and Burial Society. Mr. Rutherford was born Dec. 29, 1919, in Hereford, Texas. He married Lois K. Smedley on Feb. 12, 1943. Survivors include a sister, Helen Kaseta of Las Vegas; a brother, Robert S. Rutherford of Las Vegas; a son, Ralph Jarrell Rutherford III of Amarillo, Texas; four granddaughters; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Elmhurst Cemetery under the direction of Bunch-Roberts Funeral Home of Guymon. Mrs. Beck was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star and active member of Victory Memorial United Methodist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Billie Robinson and Bettie Williams; both of Guymon; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
