Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Davenport, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery by Wallace Funeral Home. Mrs. O'Daniel was born Dec. 20, 1911, in Castro County near Hart. Her parents were Robert and Mary Lou Kendrick. She lived in the Hart community until she married Dick O'Daniel on Sept. 23, 1929. They lived in Hart where Dick worked for his brother, J.D. O'Daniel, who owned Magnolia Oil Co. They later purchased farm land in the Lakeview community, west of Tulia. In 1951 the O'Daniels built their home in Tulia and moved into town. Zuleika was actively involved in city, county and state activities. Known as "Mrs. Democrat" in Swisher County, she served as Democratic Committee Woman for six years. Mrs. O'Daniel served two years on the City Council in Tulia, always keeping an ongoing list of things which needed to be done, many of which were accomplished. For example, she was active on Tulia's Beautification Committee as she promoted care for the large park near her home and other recreation areas. Zuleika O'Daniel was selected Woman of the Year by Tulia Chamber of Commerce in 1972. Later she was honored as Pioneer Woman of the Year in 1999. Always active at First Baptist Church, Zuleika served 30 years as secretary of the Sunday School Department for 9-year-old children. She was a great help to her neighbors. Many children of several generations played in the basement of her home and in her large yard. Her attitude was that of a loving grandparent. She was preceded in death by her husband on Nov. 21, 1988; a brother, Marcelus Kendrick; a sister, Robbie Jones; and her parents. Survivors include a daughter, Donna Vander Zee of San Antonio; a brother, Kellough Kendrick of Waco; two grandsons, Dan Vander Zee and wife, Kathy, of Granbury and Dirk Vander Zee and wife, Sarah, of St. Louis, Mo.; five great-grandchildren, Lindsey Vander Zee, Lacey Vander Zee and Lilley Vander Zee, all of Granbury, and J.D. Hacker STRATFORD - Alvin J.D. Hacker, 81, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark Metzger, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Stratford Cemetery by Morrison Funeral Directors. Mr. Hacker was born Dec. 14, 1920, in Vernon. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Stratford. He married Mildred "Millie" Bennett on Aug. 21, 1955, in Stratford. He was a Stratford resident since 1956. Prior to that time, he was a Hereford resident. He was a carpenter. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Betzner in 2002. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Dr. Appling was born Sept. 14, 1917, in Ellis County near Forreston, to Palmer Holoman and Sarah Caroline Hines Appling. As a child he lived in Italy, Childress, Forreston and Slaton, where he graduated from high school in 1935. He received his license to preach in August of that year. In 1940, he graduated from McMurry College with a bachelor's degree in history and in 1945, he graduated from the School of Theology at SMU with a bachelor of divinity degree. In 1968, he was awarded a doctorate of divinity degree by McMurry College. Dr. Appling married Doris Latrell Anderson on July 6, 1948, in Lubbock. They had two children, Walter Douglas and Karen Sue. He began his appointments in 1943 as an associate at First Methodist Church of Borger. He served in Wolfforth, Overton Chapel, Vega which was his first appointment with his wife, Denver City, Ralls, Stamford, Forrest Heights Methodist Church in Lubbock and St. Luke's Methodist Church in Midland. Following Midland, he served as the district superintendent of the Plainview district. After Plainview, he served as pastor at First United Methodist Church of Hereford and then First United Methodist Church of Borger, before serving as district superintendent of the Pampa district. His last assignment was as the senior minister at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Amarillo, where he was later named pastor emeritus. Dr. Appling retired in 1984, and later became a devoted caregiver to his wife, Latrell, during her prolonged illness until her death on April 27, 2001. During his career, he built several churches, fostered the careers of many pastors and served on numerous committees and boards at the District, Annual Conference and Jurisdictional Conference levels, however, his greatest contribution was his inspirational life in the service of God, the church and his family. Survivors include a son, Dr. W. Douglas Appling and wife, Dr. Maria M., of Houston; a daughter, Karen A. Amarillo Globe-News, Oct. 25, 2002 Elsewhere Sylvan Avondon "Sy" Hurd veteran ... WACO - Sylvan Avondon "Sy" Hurd, 80, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Waco Memorial North Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. David Story officiating. Arrangements are by Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home. Mr. Hurd was born May 18, 1922, in Lubbock, the son of Elmer D. and Madie Lee Hurd, and was one of seven children. He married Camilla Louise Wheeler on Jan. 24, 1942. They resided in Amarillo; Houston; Seoul, South Korea; and then settled in Waco 13 years ago. Sy valued the importance of family. He began working at age 6 to help support his family. It was also very important to Sy that he provide opportunities to his three children which had been denied to him, one of which was education. Sy valued the importance of education. He attended night school for 11 years, commuting from Amarillo to Lubbock while maintaining full-time employment. He graduated from West Texas State University in 1960. Sy was employed at Continental Carbon Co., initially based in Amarillo, and then in Houston. He was director of purchasing prior to moving to Korea where he was co-director of Korea Continental Carbon Co. Sy also took pride in his golf game, teaching his son, Tim, to play as soon as Tim was old enough. Sy earned many trophies in his amateur golf career, and was fortunate to play with well-known pros such as Dave Marr, Bob Rosburg and Henry Ransom. Sy served in the Navy from 1942 to 1946, leaving his new bride. He served on the USS Enterprise and USS Lexington and was very proud of his contribution to his country during World War II. Sy was preceded in death by his infant brother, E.D. Hurd; his older brother, Leland Hurd; his twin sister, Sibyl Alexander; and a nephew, Richard Alexander.
