She was preceded in death by her father, Adolfo Guardiola; and two brothers, Francisco Guardiola and Guadalupe Guardiola. Amarillo Globe-News, Nov. 1, 2002 Amarillo Sarah Elizabeth "Liz" Pavillard Rietman Sarah Elizabeth "Liz" Pavillard Rietman, 94, of Amarillo died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002. Mass will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in St. Mary's Catholic Church with Monsignor Francis Smyer and Monsignor Joe Bixenman officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mrs. Rietman was born April 29, 1908, in Amarillo, where she spent her first 92 years. She was one of eight children from one of the pioneering families of the Texas Panhandle. She was married to Herman Rietman, and together they raised their three children on the north side of Amarillo. Today, a number of streets in the neighborhood still bear their names. Elizabeth was a longtime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a devoted volunteer at St. Anthony's Hospital. She was also a very active parishioner while attending St. Laurence, as well as an accomplished bookkeeper. Elizabeth is fondly remembered as a brilliant, strong woman who loved painting, the beauty of rocks, and the fun challenge of a well-played Scrabble or bridge game. Survivors include three children, Alice Hadwin of Jacksonville, Fla., Noel "Bud" Rietman of Santa Fe, N.M., and Sarah Stanley of Delray Beach, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He attended Wentworth Military School in Lexington, Mo., for a year. He graduated from Amarillo High School. He worked for P&C Office Machines and also as a maintenance man for rental properties. He married Catherine Owen Monning and they had one son Owen Ewing Winsett. He attended Amarillo Public Schools, West Texas State University, Kemper Military School, University of Texas, UT Medical Branch in Galveston and American International University. He received a B.A. degree in biology, a M.D. and a Ph.D. in philosophy and theology. He served as director of various groups including Texas Commerce Bank of Amarillo, Amarillo Art Center, Texas Arts Alliance, Texas Opera Theater, Texas Association of Museums Trustee Committee, Amarillo Opera, KACV-TV board and Paul Brindley Distinguished Professorship. He was a member of the staff at St. Anthony's Hospital, High Plains Baptist Hospital, Potter-Randall County Medical Society, Texas Medical Society, American Medical Association and Southwestern Surgical Congress. He was a guest lecturer at West Texas State University. His publications include Texas State Journal of Medicine, Charterhouse Clinic, London, Comwin Book Company, Staked Plains Press and Anglican Press. Honors include co-founder of the Amarillo Opera, winner of the Golden Nail Mayor's Award in 1985, Amarillo High's Sandie Hall of Fame, member of the original Amarillo Area Foundation Hospital Committee and the state board of Health Care Facilities. Dr. Winsett was a layreader at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church since he was 17. He was a Sunday school teacher and biblical scholar for 50 years. He was a captain in the medical corps of the Army during World War II. He was a photographer, teacher, music lover, woodworker and a world traveler. He was a substitute teacher in the Amarillo Independent School District after his retirement, and a HOSTS mentor at Mesa Verde Elementary. Survivors include his wife; a son, Dr. Owen Ewing Winsett and wife, Mary Zelsman Winsett, of Austin; four grandchildren, Robert Ewing Winsett, Anne Merrill Winsett, William Owen Winsett and Frank Thompson Winsett; a sister, Mary Winsett Schmidt; and an uncle, Frank Maxwell Winsett.
