Dr. Porter was professor emeritus of agronomy with Texas A&M University's Soil and Crop Science Department and Texas Agricultural Experiment Station. He retired in 1988. Before his retirement he was instrumental in developing 16 varieties of wheat which are planted across millions of acres and produce billions of loaves of bread. Named one of the 100 most instrumental people in the Texas Panhandle, Dr. Porter was the pre-eminent wheat breeder in the Southern Great Plains for many decades. He served in the Army from 1941 to 1945 and joined the Production Agriculture Research Laboratory at Bushland in 1947. Initially, he developed wheat breeds such as Westar, Caprock and Tascosa, all adopted by farmers during his early research. He became a leader in the establishment of semi-dwarfed red winter wheat varieties such as Sturdy, TAM 101, TAM 105 and TAM 107. In 1999, when the Kenneth B. Porter Wheat Seed Processing and Storage Building at the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station near Bushland was dedicated, it was said Dr. Porter's work in wheat breeding did much to deter hunger and malnutrition throughout the world.
