McAlister MULESHOE - Gladys M. McAlister, 90, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, in Amarillo. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in 16th and Avenue D Church of Christ with Curtis Shelburne, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Muleshoe Memorial Park Cemetery by Ellis Funeral Home. Mrs. McAlister moved to Amarillo in 2000 from Muleshoe, where she had lived since 1957. She was a homemaker. Survivors include a son, Billy McAlister of Amarillo; two daughters, Marsha Baptiste of Amarillo and Retha Cousin of Slidell, La.; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Amarillo Globe-News, Nov. 27, 2002 Louise Cobb Burton CLAUDE - Louise Cobb Burton, 91, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002. Services will be at 4 p.m. today in First Baptist Church of Claude with the Rev. Lance Wood, pastor of First Baptist Church of Miami, and the Rev. Max Brown, interim pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Claude Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Claude Chapel. Mrs. Burton was born in Armstrong County on May 25, 1911, to Jesse Lewis "George" Cobb and Norma Rose Burt Cobb. She had been a resident of Claude all of her life. She joined First Baptist Church of Claude on April 27, 1930. She was an active worker in the nursery for many years, and later enjoyed the Senior Adult Women's Sunday School Class. She married Ray R. Burton, also of Claude, on June 7, 1941. The couple farmed until shortly after Pearl Harbor, when Ray enlisted in the Army. Upon returning home, Mr. Burton was elected Armstrong County Sheriff. He was killed in the line of duty on June 7, 1946, leaving his widow and an infant daughter. Mrs. Burton devoted her life to her family. She was preceded in death by her parents of Claude; two sisters, Alleen Mathews and Bonnie Wood, both of Claude; and two brothers, Harold Cobb and Monroe Cobb, both of Claude. Survivors include a daughter, Janyth Burton Hubbard and husband, Jim, of Claude; two grandchildren, Melanie Noelle Hubbard and Rhett Jackson Hubbard, both of Amarillo; and two sisters, Lorean Hood of Claude and Oleta Williams of Sierra Vista, Ariz. Mrs. Stewart was born July 8, 1909, in Turkey. She married Sidney Felton Stewart on Sept. 19, 1926, in Lovers Lane, Hall County. Survivors include a son, Sidney F. Mr. Baggett was born June 9, 1922, in the Herring Community. He retired after 25 years of service with Ionics Corp. at the age of 75. Osage St. Mrs. Baeza was born in El Paso and was raised in Dell City. She married Manuel Baeza in 1981 at Dell City. She moved to Amarillo in 1990. She worked as hostess at Cracker Barrel restaurant, and later as a special education teacher's assistant at Horace Mann Middle School. She was a member of St. Laurence Cathedral. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in Fleener Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Chet Mendenhall officiating. Military burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Mr. Weatherford was born Dec. 29, 1944, in Borger, Texas. He was an Army veteran, serving during Vietnam. Denko AUSTIN - Dr. John V. Denko, 79, formerly of Amarillo, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, in California. Private services will be held. Arrangements are by Accucare. Dr. Denko was Amarillo's first board-certified pathologist and a longtime civic leader. He was a resident of Austin and had lived in Amarillo for 45 years. Dr. Denko came to Amarillo in 1954. Noted for his expertise in both surgical and laboratory pathology, he was the director of laboratories at Northwest Texas Hospital from 1954 to 1988. In addition, he founded the hospital's School of Medical Technology, which he directed from 1956 to 1988. In 1957, he began a 20-year tenure as editor of the Texas Panhandle Medical Society Bulletin. He also directed his own pathology in the city for more than 35 years and was a pathologist for many years at the Veterans Administration Hospital. Dr. Denko served twice as the president of Texas Panhandle Medical Society, in 1962 and in 1970 to 1972. He loved teaching. He was an instructor in pathology at University of Illinois School of Medicine in Chicago, at University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle and was an associate professor at Texas Tech School of Medicine in Lubbock. He was adjunct professor of biology at West Texas State University and at Eastern New Mexico State University. He was a delegate to the College of American Pathologists from 1986 to 1990 and a lifetime member of American Medical Association. During his career, Dr. Denko authored many papers in prominent medical journals. Dr. Denko was a leading figure in civic and cultural affairs in Amarillo. He was a founding chairman of Amarillo Foundation for Health and Science Education and the first president of Harrington Discovery Center, filling that role from 1967 to 1979. He was president of Amarillo Symphony Board from 1960 to 1962 and was a vice president of Texas Panhandle Heritage Foundation from 1961 to 1964. He was a supporter of Lone Star Ballet and the Center for Texas Culture. He was a member of Rotary and actively involved with Planned Parenthood. Dr. Denko was a worldwide traveler and many of his trips were to explore his interest in wildlife and the world of nature. Among the places he visited were the Amazon River, the Galapagos Islands, East Africa and Baja California. He was a member of Texas Audubon Society and Sierra Club. Dr. Denko was born July 22, 1923, in Ellwood City, Pa., to Charles Wasil and Anna Evdokia Denko, who came to the United States from Belarus. He attended Antioch College, Dennison University and earned his bachelor of science degree from University of Chicago. He earned his medical degree from University of Chicago in 1947. He served in the Naval Reserve (V-12) from 1943 to 1945 and was a lieutenant commander (surgeon) at the U.S. Public Health Service Marine Hospital in Seattle from 1952 to 1954, where he was deputy chief of pathology. He married the former Gloria Sandalis in Chicago in 1947. They later divorced. In 1981, he married Susan Shelden in Amarillo. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Lyttle; and a brother, Peter Denko. Survivors include his wife; his children, Madeleine Denko Carter of Portland, Ore., John Scott Denko of Austin and Kathryn McAfee of Amarillo; his stepchildren, David Fraze of San Francisco and Wendy Aguilar of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.; his brother, Dr. Charles W. Denko of Cleveland; a sister, Helen Muller of Zelienople, Pa.; his nephews, Robert Lyttle of Ellwood City, Christopher Denko of Washington, D.C., Dr. Nicholas Denko of Palo Alto, Calif., and Dr. Timothey Denko of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and five grandchildren.
