Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Wright Funeral Directors Chapel with Joe G. Jernigan, pastor of Calvary Christian Fellowship Church, and Pedro Juarez, deacon, officiating. Burial will be in Shamrock Cemetery. Mr. Sherrod had worked for United Carbon Black in Shamrock for many years and was then transferred to Ashland Oil in Houston. Later, he was transferred to the home office of Ashland Inc. in Ashland, where he retired in 1981. Mr. Sherrod was born on Nov. 30, 1925, to the late Robert E. and Katherine Sherrod of Fort Worth. He married Betty Burks in Fort Worth on June 25, 1949. He was a veteran, serving in the Army during World War II. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Ashland, and also a member of Ashland Oil Retirees Club. The Kentucky Colonel award had been presented to Mr. Sherrod by the governor of Kentucky for his many civic services performed in his community. Survivors include his wife; a son, Mitchell Sherrod and wife, Susan, of Greenup, Ky.; a daughter, Melissa Rackley of Houston; three grandchildren, Rodney Sherrod and wife, Teresa, of Versailles, Ky., Ashlyn Rackley of Houston and Justin Rackley of College Station; two great-granddaughters, Brittany Sherrod and Trinity Sherrod, both of Versailles; three brothers, Robert W. Sherrod and wife, Frances, of Burleson, William E. Sherrod and wife, Billye, of Fort Worth and Joe R. Sherrod and wife, Charlotte, of Dallas. Amarillo Globe-News, Dec. 11, 2002 Oscar Emmitt Drake WAKA - Oscar Emmitt Drake, 80, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002. Private family memorial services will be at a later date. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Perryton. Mr. Drake was born April 21, 1922, in Bushland. He attended schools in Waka, Perryton and Yamhill, Ore. During his teens, he moved with his stepfather and mother to Oregon. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he worked as a logger, lumberjack and a truck driver in the redwood forests of northern California. He later moved to Grand Junction, Colo., where he prospected for uranium in New Mexico and Arizona with two friends, Walt Verner and Dane Broadfoot. In 1958, he moved to Waka and helped his stepfather and mother, J.P. and Eula Berry, operate Berry Grain Co. He later bought the business from them in 1965 and continued to own and manage it until 1994, when he sold it to Robinson Grain Co. He supported Ochiltree and Hansford 4-H stock shows during the time he was in business and in his retirement. In 1994, the Ochiltree County show was dedicated to him. He married Sandra Stump Ladd on Aug. 30, 1975, in Raton, N.M. He served on the Waka School Board in the late 1950s and early 1960s, during which time the school built a new auditorium and gymnasium. He was a charter member of the Waka Water Supply, serving on the board from its inception, and was a volunteer fireman for the Waka community. He was a life member of NRA. He was a charter member of Waka Lions Club, served as president and was awarded the Marvin Jones Fellow and Jack Welsh Fellow for his work in the club. He and his wife were caretakers of the Waka Cemetery. In his retirement years he began collecting anvils. He became very knowledgeable in that field and was well-known for his collection. Survivors include his wife; a son, Steven Drake and wife, Bev, of Porterville, Calif.; a stepson, Jim Ladd and wife, Mary, of Erie, Colo.; two grandchildren, Ford Ladd and Grace Ladd; a half-brother, Jesse Berry and wife, Merry, of Carlton, Ore.; a niece; and a nephew. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Dalhart Church of the Nazarene with Darryl Tennefos, pastor of Church of the Nazarene in Portales, and Jimmye Cole, pastor of Church of the Nazarene of Elkhart, Kan., officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Horizon Funeral Home. Mr. Hall was born July 18, 1915, in Boone, Iowa. He married Mildred M. Hancock on June 13, 1936. Mrs. West was born Nov. 18, 1917, in Mosheim, near Valley Mills, the daughter of Johnie Thomas Dickinson and Nina Matthews Dickinson. The family moved to Clovis, N.M., where she graduated from high school. She married Clinton E. West and moved to Hereford in 1954. Mrs. West worked for Anthony's and later Deaf Smith County for many years. She was a member of Hereford Church of the Nazarene. Mrs. West will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1964; and a son, Johnny Wayne West in January 2000. Amarillo Globe-News, Dec. 11, 2002 Amarillo Gae Blackburn Wilson Gae Blackburn Wilson, formerly of Amarillo died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, in Oakland, Calif. A private memorial service was held Nov. 30, under the Golden Gate Bridge. Another service will be Sunday in Mauna Bay, Hawaii. Mrs. Wilson was the daughter of the late Dorothy and Percy Blackburn of Amarillo. Following the death of her husband, Charles Richard Wilson, she moved to Hawaii and joined her sister, Beth, who was going to school at the time. She became very active in the real estate business in Hawaii, serving as a principal broker for the Mona Lonia Real Estate Co. for 25 years. She made many trips back to Amarillo for annual reunions with classmates from Amarillo High School. Survivors include a daughter, Holley Reasoner of West Des Moines, Iowa; a son, Charles R. She resided in Amarillo until two years ago when she moved to Aurora, Colo., to live near a greater number of family members. She was a former Sunday school teacher, Cub Scout Leader, Brownie Leader and PTA President, as well as working full time for 44 years as a bookkeeper in the freight business. Survivors include a son, Vic Evans and wife, Sharon, of Littleton; a daughter, Jacquelyn McSorley Lasiter and husband, Randy, of Amarillo; five grandchildren, Shawn, Christina, Ryan, Jennifer and Maresha; and two great-grandchildren, Joshua and Seeara. Mr. Zachry was born Dec. 2, 1925, in Happy, to Eugene and Jane Trusty Zachry. He farmed in Wayside, owned Mobil and Exxon service stations in Canyon and was a mechanic for the Ford dealership on the Canyon Square and the Case implement dealership in Happy. He worked for the Gardner family in Vigo Park before retiring. He was a member of Canyon Fire Department and First United Methodist Church of Canyon. He was preceded in death by his ex-wife, May Montgomery Zachry; an infant child, Sherri Lynn Zachry; eight siblings, Ruby Zachry Davis, Ruth Zachry, Jessie Zachry, Dorothy Zachry, Eugene Zachry, Dellas Zachry, Mary Zachry Cayton, Ema Gene Zachry Cobb; and a nephew, Robert Zachry. Mr. Jones was born April 14, 1929, to Frank Calvin and Lillian Velma Burke Jones in Wellington. On March 13, 1977, he married Eva Amanda Seabolt Smothermon in Amarillo. He retired as a code enforcement officer from the city of McKinney in 1994. He served in the Army and was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Princeton. He was preceded in death by a son, David Smothermon in 1994.
