She earned a bachelor's degree from University of Wichita, followed by a master's degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. She then taught two years in Paw Paw and campus training schools of the Western Michigan College of Education in Kalamazoo, and one year at Frances Shimer Junior College in Mount Carroll, Ill. In 1944, she moved to Canyon to teach in the music department of the then West Texas State Teachers College. She taught there until 1976, with time out during four summers and one winter to obtain a doctorate in musicology from the University of Indiana. During the summer of 1945, she studied piano at Juilliard School of Music in New York City. During her 30 years at West Texas, she introduced and taught 15 different courses. Activities outside the classroom included organizing and administering an areawide piano festival/competition. She was sponsor of the newly organized women's band sorority, Beta Tau Sigma. She was instrumental in organizing the Newman Club for Catholic students and served as its sponsor for many years. She developed the music library and was then assigned to plan and organize the physical layout for the music library in the new Mary Moody Northen music building. She also developed a handbook for use of the music library. She promoted the formation of an ensemble using old instruments to play medieval and renaissance music (known as the Matilda Gaume Early Music Consort). This group performs annually at the University Madrigal Dinner. She served as acting head of the music department in 1963 until a permanent replacement was hired. She also served on the faculty council for two years. She performed many programs as a piano soloist during her life, including a solo performance with the Amarillo Symphony under Clyde Roller when she played the Grieg "Piano Concerto in A Minor." She played a six-week series of piano recitals aired over KAMQ, Amarillo, toured the northern Panhandle performing in area high schools, appeared as soloist with the WT Symphonic Band, performed many faculty recitals and chamber music concerts, television appearances and club programs. She accompanied many solo performers as well as group performers. After retiring from WT she traveled to Taichung, Taiwan, to teach music for a year at the University of Tunghai. She has since enjoyed traveling to many places in the United States, including Alaska; to Canada and abroad to Europe, Greece and Egypt, to the Orient and the South Pacific. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, reading, photography and playing the piano. The year after her return from Taiwan, she began research and writing on a biography of Ruth Crawford Seeger, an American woman composer, and stepmother of folk singer, Pete Seeger. She traveled coast to coast to obtain interviews and to gather information from various public and university libraries, most notably the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. During this period, she also served as editor of RITORNELLO, the alumni news bulletin of the WT music department. Publications include a book on Ruth Crawford Seeger's life and compositions in 1986, and articles on Seeger for three different reference books: Notable American Women - the Modern Period in 1980, The New Grove Dictionary of American Music in 1986, and Women Making Music in 1986. She served most of her life as organist for each parish in which she lived. At St. Ann's in Canyon, she served as organist for 45 years. For a number of years, she was also a choir director and music director for the parish. During this period, she staged a Christmas cantata "The Glory of Christmas" which was sung by the choir. When a new organ was given to the church in 1983, she wrote a Mass in honor of St. Ann, dedicated it to the donor of the organ, and conducted its performance at the dedication ceremonies. For the 25th anniversary of the present church building in Canyon, she contributed to writing a history of the parish since its beginning and wrote several other articles for the commemorative book which was published at that time in 1989. During her last few years, she lived at Palo Duro Village Cooperative where she was involved as a member of the board of directors, as secretary for the advisory council, as a pianist-leader for sing-a-long, and as director of a weekly entertainment series.
