Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 3, 2003 Amarillo Francis Vernon "Dink" Hurt Francis Vernon "Dink" Hurt, 81, of Amarillo died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, in Austin. Family graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Llano Cemetery with the Rev. Roy Wheeler, minister emeritus of Paramount Terrace Christian Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Mr. Hurt, a Methodist, was reared by his uncle, the Rev. C. Frank York, a Methodist minister who served in Florida, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Mr. Hurt attended McMurry College in Abilene before entering the Navy during World War II. Seaman Hurt led worship services aboard ship while sailing to the South Pacific. He served on the office staff of Adm. William F. "Bull" Halsey Jr. as several Pacific islands were captured in the island-hopping campaign. His tour of service ended after the capture and pacification of Guam. Mr. Hurt returned from Guam to his home in Quanah. He later attended Texas Christian University and became a certified public accountant, beginning his professional career in Fort Worth. He was a Mason. In later years, Mr. Hurt was cared for by Ken Kaplan of Austin, a family friend. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Patricia Ilene Daughtry Hurt; their infant daughter Ann; and an infant granddaughter, Dessica Faye Hurt. Mrs. Brown graduated from Amarillo High School and earned an associate of arts degree from Amarillo College. On her birthday in 1939, she married David B. Brown. She was preceded in death by her husband. Georgia St. Mrs. Baxter was born and raised in Bentonville, Ark. In 1951, she moved from Borger to Los Angeles, where she owned and operated two beauty salons. Mrs. Baxter retired to Phoenix in 1989, and for the last four years she resided at IHS Nursing Home in Amarillo. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and will be missed dearly. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and was a member of Family Worship Center. He moved to Amarillo in 1945 and married Yvonne Board that same year. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle. He and his family moved to Fritch in 1953 and resided there until 1966. While in Fritch, he was very active in the community, serving as coach of Little League Baseball and was elected fire chief of Fritch Volunteer Fire Department. He retired from Pioneer Natural Gas and Cabot in 1987. He was preceded in death by a son, Kerry Whitley in 1981. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Kathy May and husband, Jerry, of Clarendon; a son, Phil Whitley and wife, Nona, of Amarillo; a sister; four brothers; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of friends and loved ones. She graduated from Ardmore High School and received her BA from West Texas State University in English and education. She then received her master's of education from WTSU. She taught in Canyon Independent School District for 29 years, retiring in 1990. She married Gene Read at Ardmore, Okla., on April 14, 1949. She was the current president of Fine Arts Club, a member of Retired Teachers Association and was an elder and deacon at First Presbyterian Church. She delivered Meals on Wheels for 10 years and was a docent at Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Elizabeth, in 1996. Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 3, 2003 Elsewhere Melanie Elizabeth Daniel BAYTOWN - Melanie Elizabeth Daniel, 17, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, in Lubbock. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Memorial Park Cemetery in Amarillo with the Rev. Scott Richards of Trinity United Methodist Church officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors of Amarillo, 2820 Virginia Circle. Miss Daniel was born July 5, 1985, in Houston, to Lawrence G. Daniel and Glenda G. Daniel. She grew up in Baytown and was a senior at Baytown Sterling High School, where she was active in the choir. Melanie Elizabeth was very artistic, and was an active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, serving as head of the youth group. She was a person who was happy all of the time. Survivors include her parents of Baytown; three sisters, Shiloh D. Bucher of Austin, Rebekah J. Coronado of Baytown and Erin Rachel Daniel of Huntsville; two brothers, Lawrence J. Daniel of Baytown and Alexander R. Daniel of Austin; and her grandparents, Maxye Daniel of Amarillo and Glenn Thompson of Eagle's Nest, N.M. The family suggests memorials be to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 7915 Bayway Drive, Baytown, TX 71520.
