Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Mark Julian, pastor of Fairfield Baptist Church of Cypress, officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mr. Staus was born June 17, 1955, in Pampa. He was a 1973 graduate of Pampa High School where he was a Harvester football standout. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees in agronomy from Texas Tech University where he played football for the Red Raider football team. He worked as a sales representative in the chemical industry for many years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lubbock where he was active as a youth sponsor. He was preceded in death by his father, Jimmy Staus, in 1981. Survivors include a son, Cody Lynn Staus of Dallas; a stepdaughter, Channa Pierce of Dallas; his mother and stepfather, Romona Staus and Claude Schmatjen of Pampa; two sisters, Kelle Staus of Pampa and Troi Staus of Del City, Okla.; a brother, Jimmy Staus of Duncan, S.C.; and special friends, David Helms of Pampa and Ami Hill of Lubbock. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church of Mobeetie with Dr. Toby Henson, pastor of First Baptist Church of Wheeler, officiating. Burial will be in Wheeler Cemetery by Wright Funeral Home. Mrs. Brotherton was born to Henry and Hattie Rutherford Vise in Anson on April 5, 1912. She attended schools in Anson. She married Claudy Brotherton on Oct. 19, 1928, in Anson and moved to Hemphill County. She then moved to Wheeler County in 1961. She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church of Mobeetie. She was also a member of the T.E.L. Sunday school class. She enjoyed going to singings. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1998; and a great-granddaughter. Survivors include a son, C.B. Brotherton Jr. of Wheeler; two daughters, Dorothy Honath of Amarillo and Doris Finsterwald of Mobeetie; a brother, Murry Vise of Tulia; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Aaron Reed, pastor, and the Rev. Gene Hawkins of Lubbock officiating. Burial will be in Bovina Cemetery by Blackwell Funeral Home of Friona. Mr. Garner was a resident of the Bovina area since 1959, moving from Plainview. He was a farmer. He was born July 10, 1934, in Plainview. He married LaQueta Chaney on Sept. 9, 1955, in Clovis, N.M. He graduated from Texas Tech in 1956 in Animal Husbandry. He was ordained a deacon at the FBC in Bovina in 1972. He served on the school board of Bovina ISD for nine years. He was a former board member of Bovina Chamber of Commerce. He was in the Army from 1956 to 1958 as a military policeman. He was preceded in death by his mother, Opal, in 1949; his father, John V. "Dick," in 1970; his stepmother, Leora, in 1994; and two brothers, John Jr., in 1925 and Wendall in 1983. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Tim Garner of Clovis, and Doyle Garner and wife, Gilda, of Bovina; a daughter, Donell Callender and husband, David, of Lubbock; a stepbrother, Jamie Davis of Gales Ferry, Conn.; and four grandchildren, Gabe, Logan, Mike and Matthew Garner. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in First Assembly of God in Sunray with Larry Brace, pastor of Pentecostal Church of God in Sunray, and the Rev. Roy Harris of Kerrick officiating. Burial will be in Lane Memorial Cemetery of Sunray by Morrison Funeral Directors of Dumas. Mr. Baker was born Feb. 25, 1926, in Mannford, Okla., and lived in the Panhandle area since 1965. He married Berlene Ashburn on Aug. 8, 1950, in Oilton, Okla. He was the son of James and Margaret Baker. He was one of 12 children, six girls and six boys. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Lessie Rich, Lillie Connors and Juanita "Sis" Poole; and three brothers, Bennie, R.T. and Jim Baker. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Laquita Clemmons of Texhoma and Rita Faye Ramirez of Stratford; three sons, Michael Baker of Guymon, Okla., Bobby Baker of Dalhart and Leon Baker of Elkhart, Kan.; three sisters, Alice Watkins of Yale, Okla., Jewel Baker of Oilton and Mary Huff of Ripley, Okla.; two brothers, Melvin Baker of Sunray and Vernon Baker of Oilton; 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 26, 2003 Leonardo Martinez HEREFORD - Leonardo Martinez, 84, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today in Parkside Chapel Funeral Home. Mr. Martinez was born April 11, 1919, in San Antonio. He married Guadalupe Salazar in 1938 at San Antonio. He was a retired custodian of the Hereford Independent School District. Survivors include three sons, Rodolfo Martinez of Amarillo, Juan Martinez of Hereford and Bobby Martinez of Ruidoso, N.M.; five daughters, Junita Vallejo, Eva Herrera, Irene Garcia and Rosalinda Trevino, all of Hereford, and Sylvia Yzaguirre of Joliet, Ill.; a brother, Juan Martinez of San Antonio; 22 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 26, 2003 Amarillo Candido Gusman Pantoja Candido Gusman Pantoja, 77, of Amarillo died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today in Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia. Mass will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Monsignor Rex Nicholl officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery with military rites by D.A.V. Chapter No. 26. Mr. Pantoja was born Oct. 5, 1925, in Nixon. He served in the Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1946 and also in the Korean War from 1950 to 1952. He received a letter of bravery from President Truman for serving his country. He was employed by Gilvin-Terril Construction Co. for 30 years and DePaul Construction for 15 years. Father and grandfather, he will be missed and remembered in our hearts. We all love you. He was preceded in death byhis mother, Adela Gusman Pantoja, on July 16, 1975; his father, Alberto Pantoja, on Nov. 13, 1975; and a sister, Wencha Bustos, on Sept. 7, 1997. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Pauline; sons, Sebastian M. Pantoja and wife, Eva, of Weatherford, Okla., Albert M. She was a school teacher for 32 years having taught in this area as well as New Mexico. She married Lealan M. Spicer in 1950. She was preceded in death by her husband. Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 26, 2003 Canyon W.J. "Jay" Wooten Jr., DDS W.J. "Jay" Wooten Jr., DDS, 79, of Canyon died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church with Dr. Strauss Atkinson, pastor emeritus, and the Rev. David Lowrie, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery by Brooks Funeral Directors. Dr. Wooten was born Oct. 19, 1923, in Canyon to W.J. and Maude Wooten, the fourth of five boys. He spent all his school years in Canyon, graduating in 1940. He did his undergraduate work at West Texas State College and graduated from Northwestern University Dental School in 1945. While in dental school, he joined the Naval Reserve Dental Corps. Upon completion of his dental degree he was stationed at San Diego, Tientsen, China, with the first Marine division, at Camp Hood on a lend-lease assignment with the Army and finally on a lease to the Air Force in New Orleans until his discharge in September 1947. He married Joyce Hunt on Sept. 28, 1946, in Rule. They moved to Canyon where he began his dental practice on Sept. 9, 1947, in the new medical and dental clinic with Robert P. Jarrett, M.D. He practiced in the Canyon Clinic until his retirement in November 1996. He practiced dentistry for 51 years and sincerely loved his patients and his work. He was a member of the Panhandle District Dental Society and was a life member of both the Texas and American Dental Associations. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Canyon where he attended a men's Sunday school class and served as a deacon. He was a board member of the Llano Estacado Council of the Boy Scouts of America and served as an assistant scout master. He taught Canyon's first God and Country classes for the Boy Scouts. He was a past president of the Lion's Club, past director of the Chamber of Commerce and served on the City Board of Adjustment. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed frequent fishing trips with his friends to Canada or Mexico. He also enjoyed playing tennis, dominoes and bridge. The family wishes to extend grateful appreciation to the caring staff of The Cottages of Quail Creek and the Crown of Texas Hospice. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Elmer, Clarence and Chris. Survivors include his wife, Joyce; a son, Ronald Jay Wooten and wife, Karyn, of Amarillo; a brother, Leroy Wooten of Amarillo; two grandchildren, Jay Garrett Wooten of Amarillo and Valerie Wooten of Euless; numerous nieces and nephews; and extended family members. Moss, 92, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Dumas Cemetery with Mr. Mike Smith, of Sixth Street Church of Christ, officiating. Arrangements are by Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors, Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street. Mr. Moss of Bertram and formerly of Dumas and Amarillo was born in Ben Franklin on Feb. 18, 1910. He graduated from Cooper High School and went on to graduate from Baylor Pharmaceutical School in 1934. He married Delene Hurst on Nov. 3, 1935, in Ben Franklin. He owned and operated M&M Drug in Dumas for many years before retiring and moving to Amarillo. While in Amarillo he worked in various pharmacies and owned and operated a golf driving range. Survivors include his wife; children, Gayle Ebling and husband, John, of Amarillo and Carolynn Douglas and husband, Leon, of Bertram; four grandchildren, Lisa Conn and husband, Paul, Sarah Ebling, Rhonda Clark and husband, Ken, and Nathan Douglas and wife, Trisha; and four great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home. Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 26, 2003 Russell Eugene Coons HAWARDEN, Iowa - Russell Eugene "Gene" Coons, 60, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003. Prayer services will be at 7 p.m. today in St. Mary Catholic Church of Hawarden. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Mary Catholic Church with LeRoy Seuntjens officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton by Porter Funeral Home. Mr. Coons, the son of Russell and Loretta Muth Coons, was born Sept. 22, 1942, in Hawarden. He was very active in school sports, band, FFA and 4-H, raising many prize-winning purebred hogs. He graduated from West Sioux High School in 1961. After graduation he worked in retail groceries and later started his career in the beef packing industry. He married Cathleen Campbell. In 1976 he joined the USDA meat grading service and worked in this field until retiring in 2002. He started grading in Sioux Falls, S.D., in 1976 and transferred to Dumas, Texas, in 1978. While in Dumas he coached and played softball. He worked at the Cactus plant outside Dumas until 1997 when he transferred to San Angelo, Texas. Cathleen passed away Aug. 16, 2002, in San Angelo. He also did relief work throughout the United States and worked a brief time in Amarillo making that his home in 2001. He married Maria De Lourdes Hernandez. He was a member of various Catholic churches throughout his life. He participated as an altar boy, usher and third and fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Shelly Tehan-Moon and son-in-law, Allen Moon, both of Amarillo; stepsons, Efrain and Jesse Robert Esparza, both of Amarillo; a brother, Myron Coons and wife, Linda, of Ireton; a granddaughter, Madison Moon of Amarillo; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Cathleen. Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in the family plot of Tucumcari Memorial Park Cemetery by Dunn Funeral Home. Mrs. Madrid was born March 29, 1916, in Trementina. She had been a longtime resident of Tucumcari. Survivors include a daughter, Refunia Martinez of Tucumcari; a son, Anselmo Madrid of Tucumcari; two brothers, Santiago Ortiz of Tucumcari and Reymundo Ortize of Windsor, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Mr. Essary was born Sept. 20, 1917, in Anston to Minta Mae and John Wesley Essary. He married Esther Marie Adams in Spearman and they lived in several places before moving to Texola to make their home. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Terry Dunham of Amarillo, DeeAnn Graham of Alva and Anita Beth Archer of Elk City; four sons, D.W. Essary of Lubbock, Texas, Jerry Essary of Sayre, John Wesley Essary of Texola and Curby Essary of Bloomfield, N.M.; a sister and his twin brother; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
