Celebration of life services and Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Vega. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the church with the Rev. Mieczyslaw Przepiora, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Vega by Holley Funeral Home of Canyon. Mr. Artho was born July 1, 1924, at St. Anthony's Hospital in Amarillo. He served as a sergeant in A Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. He was one of five survivors out of 236 officers and men that hit the beach of Okinawa during World War II. He was stationed at Tientsin, China, for a year. He was a 4th degree member of Knights of Columbus, Council No. 2808, Umbarger, VFW of Vega, American Legion of Montesano, Wash., China Marine Division, and among his many other civic duties, he served on the Wildorado Independent School Board. He was a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Vega. He farmed and ranched in Deaf Smith and Randall counties all of his life. He enjoyed raising crops, cows and kids. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Artho and Louisa Skypala Artho; two brothers, Elroy Artho and Leo Artho; a sister, Gracie Raef; and a son, Ned Artho. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Derwin Comer, minister of youth and music, officiating. Burial will be in North Fairview Cemetery by Adams Funeral Home. Mrs. Hays was born Aug. 18, 1909, to the Rev. James Louis and Virginia Allen Hays. She began school in Jean and graduated from Sunset Hugh School in 1928. Myra worked in various office capacities, including the Texas Relief Commission from 1933 to 1936. She began work for Farmers Home Administration in December 1936, working in Wellington, Childress, Wheeler and Plainview. Myra returned to Wellington in 1969 and retired in 1975. She was baptized at age 11 in Bellevue. A member of First Baptist Church of Wellington since 1930, Myra worked with the nine- through 12-year-olds in training union, sang in the church choir and was director of adult four Sunday school department for 15 years. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Virginia Biter, Murl Hays and Larlu Hays. Survivors include two sisters, Mary Thornton of Pueblo, Colo., and Jessie Pollard of Odessa. She was a Dodge City and Jetmore Resident until she moved to Amarillo in 1992. On July 26, 1955, she married Stanley E. Jones at Tucumcari, N.M. They later divorced but remained good friends. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery of Amarillo by Brooks Funeral Directors. Mrs. Ficke was born April 5, 1921, in Ochiltree County, to Elbert C. and Rhoda Bess Dodson, who preceded her in death. She graduated from Perryton High School in 1938. She graduated as an RN from Northwest Texas Hospital in May 1942. She started the vocational nursing program at Amarillo College. She moved to Austin in November 1972 as executive director of Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners. She retired and moved to Canyon in December 1983. She married Hubert Bishop on Aug. 22, 1942, in Amarillo. They had two children, Karen Barnes and Richard Bishop. She married Howard J. Wilson on June 8, 1968, in Amarillo. She later married George H. Ficke on May 28, 1987. She was named Woman of the Year of Charter Chapter of ABWA in 1966. She was a volunteer at Palo Duro Hospital from 1984 until the hospital closed. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Canyon and the quilt ministry at the church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband on July 7, 1966; and her second husband on Aug. 22, 1981. Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 31, 2003 Anthony John "Tony" Grillo Anthony John "Tony" Grillo, 79, of Amarillo died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Jeff Conway of Westminster Presbyterian Church officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Grillo was born in New York City on June 21, 1923, to the late Gaspare and Rose Grillo. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. His education was from the New York Public School system and he later attended classes at Amarillo College under the GI Bill. He was a bookkeeper by trade and began his career at the old Shamrock Oil Refinery north of Dumas, and later worked at the ABC television station, KVII-TV and Santa Fe Railroad in Amarillo. He was a master sergeant in the Army Air Force and served in the Pacific Theater of World War II in New Zealand, Australia, India, China and Burma. In 1949, he was one of the founding members of First Presbyterian Church of Dumas, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. During the last 15 years of his life, he delighted in spending summers fishing for trout in his cabin in the mountains of Colorado, and going back to New York City to visit with relatives, see Broadway plays, and frequent Italian pastry shops. Although he was from the big city, he settled in the Panhandle of Texas in 1947 and called it home for the next 56 years. The family gratefully acknowledges the loving care and attention given to him over several years by his personal caregivers, Susan Ramirez and Betty Ferry, and for the care given to him by Amarillo Veterans Hospital. Special thinks go to Mr. Arthur O'Quinn, who worked with him at Santa Fe Railroad and remained his friend throughout the years as age and disease slowly confined him. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife of 35 years, Thomasina Grillo in August 2002. Mr. Cyphers was born in Lillydale, Tenn. He moved to Amarillo in 1966 from Altus, Okla. He served in the Navy during World War II. He worked as a salesman for William Cameron Supply Co. for 37 years, retiring in 1979. After his retirement, he worked for Holiday Inn as a maintenance man. He married Wannie Osborne in 1939 at Hobart, Okla. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Donna Norton of Mangum, Okla., Carolyn Flowers of Lilburn, Ga., and Barbara Smith of Amarillo; a son, Robert D. Cyphers of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a sister, Leida Higgs of Amarillo; two brothers, John Cyphers of Oklahoma City and Cordell Cyphers of Dell City, Okla.; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
