Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Crosbyton First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bruce Cotton officiating. Burial will be in Crosbyton Cemetery by Adams Funeral Home in Crosbyton. Mr. Rice was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Turkey, Plainview and Floydada. He served in the Navy from 1956 to 1959. Survivors include his wife, Pat Rice of the home; a son, Kirk Rice of Pampa; two daughters, Jeanean Wood and Jennifer Justice, both of Plainview; a stepson, Neal Edwards of Turkey; a stepdaughter, Tammi Stafford of Sweetwater and seven grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, Feb. 3, 2003 Carl G. Saxon BORGER - Carl G. Saxon, 67, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. D. Jay Lewis and the Rev. Leonard Forsythe officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery by Brown Funeral Directors. Mr. Saxon was an independent oil producer. He was a native of Levelland and a Borger resident for 50 years. Survivors include three sons, Gary Saxon of Borger, Terry Saxon of Carrollton and Steve Saxon of Texola, Okla.; a daughter, Carol Beckham of Borger; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to American Diabetes Association and American Heart Association. Amarillo Globe-News, Feb. 3, 2003 Minnie Christine Self CLAUDE - Minnie Christine Self, 82, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Claude Cemetery with the Rev. Janet Edwards, pastor of First United Methodist Church officiating. Arrangements are by Robertson Funeral Directors Inc. of Clarendon. Mrs. Self was born Aug. 2, 1920, in Hill County, and came to Kress at age 3 with her parents, Joe and Minnie Kurth Bontke. She attended schools in Taylor and Kress. She married Henry Dee Self on Sept. 28, 1944, in Plainview. They lived in Plainview and Seth Ward for 42 years before moving to Claude in 1982. She was a homemaker, baby sitter and quilter. She was also a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. She was a Lutheran. She was preceded in death by her husband in August 1991 and by four brothers, Joe Bontke, Max Bontke, Leon Bontke and Alois Bontke. Survivors include a daughter, Debbie Norman and husband, Ricky, of Claude; a son, Mart Self and wife, Regina, of Amarillo; two sisters, Gusty Bontke of Amarillo and Ruth Young of Kress; a brother Ernest Bontke and wife, Lillie, of Ford, Kan.; four grandchildren, Steve Self and wife, Lisa, of Amarillo, Kent Norman and wife, Michele, of Claude, Jeremy Self of Amarillo, Shala Parker and husband, Les, of Lubbock; four great-grandchildren, Haley, Sarah, Madison and Heather; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Honorary casket bearers are Steve Self, Shala Parker, Kent Norman and Jeremy Self. The body will be available for viewing in Claude from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and Tuesday morning. Amarillo Globe-News, Feb. 3, 2003 Clarence Ellerd TULIA - Clarence Ellerd, 75, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, in Amarillo. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in First Baptist Church of Tulia with the Rev. Charles Davenport, of First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Mr. Ellerd was born Nov. 8, 1927, in Kansas City, Mo. He moved to Amarillo in 1940 and married Betty Jean Myers on Aug. 9, 1946, in Amarillo. In 1952, he went to work in the freight business for Thomas Cartage Co. He had red hair, and one of the men there called him "PinkKnob." When the other men heard it they started calling him that. It was eventually shortened to "Pinky." In 1962, he went to work for Curry Motors Freight. In 1963, he moved to Tulia as a commissioned agent for Curry Motors Freight. He retired on July 1, 1990, after 38 years with Curry. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Tulia. He has always worked with the youth Sunday school teacher and mission work. He went to Brazil on missionary work many times. In February 1982, he became a member of the Mainland Advisory Council for the Hawaii Baptist Academy in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. He was a member of the Mission Service Corp. since 1990. In 1992, he became the president of the advisory board of Panhandle Community Service in Tulia. He was the retiring president of the board of Panhandle Community Service in Amarillo. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Vernetta Ellerd of Tulia and Belinda Giles of Olton; a son, Ralph Ellerd of Tulia; a sister, Beecy Seitz; eight grandchildren, Janene Cummings, Teresa McCall, Stacy Husmith, Bobby Bailey, Ryan Ellerd, Monica Skierski, Jessica Langston and Jennifer Ellerd; and seven great-grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, Feb. 3, 2003 Juan Carlos Marquez DUMAS - Juan Carlos Marquez, 17, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, in Amarillo. A prayer vigil will be at 7 p.m. today in Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Colwell, pastor of the church, officiating and Joe Schwertner, deacon, assisting. Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors. Mr. Marquez was born July 9, 1985, in Mexico. He had been a Dumas resident for two years. He was a sophomore at Dumas High School and a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Dumas. Survivors include his parents, Eduwiges (Vico) and Sharon Marquez of Dumas; his mother, Maria Luisa Ortega de Rincon and stepfather Antonio Rincon of Chihuahua, Mexico; two brothers, Eddie Marquez of Dumas and Gerardo Ortega of Mexico; two sisters, Amanda Marquez and Marisol Marquez of Dumas; grandparents Eduwiges and Moncerrat Marquez of Dumas. The family will be at a home 7 miles southwest of Dumas. Amarillo Globe-News, Feb. 3, 2003 Johnny R. Hucks LOCKNEY - Johnny R. Hucks, 70, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, in Lubbock. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in First Baptist Church. Cremation is under the direction of Moore-Rose-White Funeral Home of Lockney. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a prisoner of war of the Korean War. He was an X-ray lab technician at the W.J. Mangold Memorial Hospital. Survivors include his wife, Loretta Hucks of Lockney; two sons, Kevin Hucks and Tim Hucks, both of Pampa; three brothers, W.B. Hucks of Springlake, David Hucks of Lubbock and Donald Hucks of Arlington; two sisters, Rosie Gwin of Edinburg and Ruby Bolinger of Bentonville, Ark.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, Feb. 3, 2003 Eugene "Gene" Dugger DALHART - Eugene "Gene" Dugger, 89, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in First Christian Church with Barry Walker, minister of First Christian Church in Dalhart, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Horizon Funeral Home. Mr. Dugger was born Dec. 22, 1913, in Amistad, N.M., to Steve and Myrtle Bell (Redman) Dugger. His family moved to Clayton, N.M., before moving to Dalhart in 1916. Raised in Dalhart, Gene graduated from Dalhart High School and worked as a cowboy for many years before becoming a conductor for the Rock Island Railroad. He married Bobbie Jean Isabell on Nov. 26, 1941. She died Jan. 26, 1980. Gene married Jereldine Strother Goss on June 26, 1980, in Dalhart. "Jerrie" died Aug. 1, 2002. Gene retired from the Rock Island Railroad, was an Elk (B.P.O.E.) and an active member of First Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his wives; his parents; a son, Jimmie Dugger; a brother, Guy Dugger and two sisters, Vera Wilson and Jewel Neeley. Survivors include two sisters, Ila Boydstun of Freeland, Wash., and Louise Miller of Prospect Heights, Ill.; a brother, Leland Dugger of Roswell, N.M.; a granddaughter, Dyanne Pritchett of Littleton, Colo.; a grandson, Jeffery Dugger of Evergreen, Colo.; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family requests memorials be to First Christian Church, 602 Denver Ave., Dalhart. The family will be at Horizon Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. today.
