Mrs. DeSpain moved to Guymon from Gate in 1983 to be near her children. She had been a resident of Dunaway Manor since 2001. Amarillo Globe-News, Feb. 4, 2003 Canyon George R. Blake Jr. George R. Blake Jr., 74, of Canyon died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in University Church of Christ with Bob Shepard, elder and bible chair director, and David Lough, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Happy Cemetery in Happy by Brooks Funeral Directors. Mr. Blake was born March 26, 1928, in Winfield, Kan., to George Russell and Frances Bugg Blake Sr. He graduated from Winfield High School and attended Abilene Christian University from 1946 to 1948. He owned and operated a dry cleaners for 15 years in Winfield from 1948 to 1964. He married Helen Titlow in Abilene on Jan. 14, 1950. He received an associate's degree in law enforcement in 1974 from Johnson County Community College while living in Lawrence, Kan. He later earned three advanced law enforcement certificates. He moved to Lubbock in 1978 and was head of security at Lubbock Christian University. He was engaged in law enforcement for 25 years, last being at Randall County Sheriff's Department, moving to Canyon in 1980. He then retired in 1990. He was a member of University Church of Christ. His greatest achievement and joy was being a dad and a granddad. He was the best. Survivors include his wife; three sons, George R. Blake III and wife, Barbara, of Fort Worth, Paul Blake and wife, Denise, of Lubbock and Chris Blake and wife, Ellen, of Denton; a daughter, Julie Hodges and husband, Mike, of Plainview; three sisters, Margaret Groves of Starkville, Miss., Lucy Moudy of Happy and Mary House of Albuquerque, N.M.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Lucas willed his body to be used for the advancement of medical science teaching and study. Arrangements are by Holley Funeral Home. Mr. Lucas was born June 15, 1956, in Mason, W.Va., to Robert and Irene Bolin Lucas. He worked in steel construction. He was preceded in death by his father; and two brothers, William L. Vickery-Porterfield, 72, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003. Services will be at 11 a.m. today in First Southern Baptist Church in Liberal with the Rev. Keith Bryant officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. today in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Pampa, Texas. Arrangements are by Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home. Mrs. Vickery-Porterfield was born March 14, 1930, in Big Spring, Texas, the daughter of William and Reva Hamm Hawkins. She lived in Pampa until 1977, when she moved to Liberal. In 1986 she moved to Corinth, Texas, and in 1990, moved to Garden City. She co-owned and operated Bruce Well Service in Liberal until 1987. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star and First Baptist Church, both in Pampa. She loved to read, cook, travel and be with her grandchildren. On June 14, 1947, she married T.J. Vickery in Pampa. He died April 15, 1987. She married Bill Porterfield on Dec. 1, 1990, in New Mexico. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Coleta Bretthauer. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Linda Howe-Chenault of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Jodie Forsyth of Wichita; a brother, James E. Hawkins of Pampa; a sister, Robbie Lynch of Alvord, Texas; four grandchildren, Scott White, Heath Howe, Heather Howe and Brooke Krause; and a great-grandchild, Sophie Howe.
