Mrs. Becknell was a lifelong resident of Hardeman County. She was the secretary at Quanah High School and retired after 30 years. Survivors include her husband, Robert Becknell; a daughter, Jana Hardison of Vernon; a son, Bobby Becknell of Quanah; a brother, John McCrary, of Tempe, Ariz.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Downing and Edna McElroy Downing. She married Cecil Lockhart on Jan. 19, 1933, in Duke, Okla. She moved to Loco in 1927 from Duke and to Wellington in 1958 from Loco. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and the Lydia Circle. She was a former Cub Scout and Camp Fire leader. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1990; two sons, Bill Lockhart in 1992, and Steven Vassey in 2000; a daughter, Dee Ann Vassey, in 1964; four grandsons, Shayne Lockhart in 1987, Rodney Lockhart and twin infant boys; and a great-grandchild, Stacy Vassey. Evalyne Francis Messimer was born Dec. 4, 1919, in Gasoline to Bill and Lela (Kirkland) Messimer. She was raised in Quitaque. She graduated from Quitaque High School in 1937 and attended Draughon's Business School in Amarillo. She moved to Dalhart in 1951. She married Howard Plumb on July 17, 1981, in Quitaque. She was a bookkeeper for the Farm Bureau and International Tractor. She was an excellent cook and loved to crochet. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband on March 23, 1994. Mr. Hromas had been a Parmer County resident since 1919, when he moved from Wills Point. He married Amy Donaldson Aug. 9, 1939, at Oklahoma Lane. He was a farmer and a carpenter. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bovina. He was a former member of the Bovina school board. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Evelyn Skaggs in 1967 and Ernestine Lovell in 2002. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Galen Hromas and Brad Hromas, both of Bovina; a daughter, Charlotte Wilburn of Hereford; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, March 11, 2003 Stephen Leigh McGregor BAIRD - Stephen Leigh McGregor, 62, died Saturday, March 8, 2003. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Baird First United Methodist Church with Larry Gaumond, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Ross Cemetery by Parker Funeral Home. Mr. McGregor was born Dec. 21, 1940, in Amarillo. He was the son of Donald L. McGregor and Deva Moore McGregor and the brother of Donald B. McGregor. He married Sally White in Amarillo on Jan. 26, 1963. They celebrated their 40th anniversary this year. He graduated from Amarillo High School and Texas A&M University School of Architecture. He practiced architecture in Dallas for 30 years, retiring as president of Dahl Architects Inc. in 1999. Mr. McGregor was an active member of the Dallas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, serving as treasurer of the chapter during its transition to computer accounting. For his efforts, he received the Dallas Chapter President's Gold Medal for outstanding service. He was an active member of the Dallas Oak Cliff Lions Club, serving in many capacities including president from 1994-95. He was also actively involved in the Julien C. Hyer Youth Camp and its annual international youth exchange program for foreign students, serving as both hosting chairman and president. He will be remembered lovingly by young people around the world as their "dad overseas." After retirement, Steve and Sally McGregor moved to Baird, where Steve spent three thoroughly happy years as a "gentleman farmer and rancher" with a lot of help from his wonderful neighbors. Mr. McGregor was a devoted member of Baird First United Methodist Church, Baird Volunteer Fire Department and Baird Co-Op Morning Coffee and Philosophy Club. His friends will remember him as the "go-to" guy when something needed to be done, the can-do guy who could make or fix just about anything, a cheerful and willing volunteer, a quick wit who loved to laugh, a master barbecue and pastry chef and a loyal friend. He will be most remembered for his selfless giving of his time and talents to anyone in need who crossed his path. His family will remember him as a devoted servant of the Lord, a loving, generous and devoted husband, father, son, brother and "papa," always with a smile on his face and a giggle in his heart. His strong sense of family was personified by his support, devotion and dependable presence any time, any place and anywhere we could get together. Mr. Bodensteiner was born in Castalia, Iowa, and lived in Amarillo for 13 years prior to moving to Colorado and later Tucumcari. He was a crane operator for a steel erection company. He had served with the Army. His hobbies included whittling, creating inventions and collecting toy trains. He married Brenda Green on July 30, 1992, in Amarillo. He served in the Army during World War II, and he married Phyllis Ybarra on April 17, 1948, in Shadduck, Okla. He retired after 44 years as the chief maintenance director of Santa Fe Railroad. After his retirement, he volunteered several years with St. Anthony's Auxiliary. He was a member of St. Hyacinth's Catholic Church and was very active in the Knights of Columbus Council 4621. He served on St. Joseph's Parish Board and ushered at many of the Amarillo Catholic churches. He was also a member of the VFW. Although Mr. Parra will be remembered for many things, one of the fondest memories will be of the Christmas dinners that he and his wife hosted each year after Midnight Mass. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1997. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Jolene Loar and two sisters, Emma Sue Miller and Nell Carr. Amarillo Globe-News, March 11, 2003 Leonard "Pete" Jones Leonard "Pete" Jones, 85, of Amarillo died Thursday, March 6, 2003. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in New Light Ministries. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Lee Cemetery in Winnsboro by Warford-Walker Mortuary, 509 N. Hughes St. Mr. Jones was born June 18, 1917, in Winnsboro, to Johnnie and Daisy Jones. He was one of 12 children. Pete attended Dunbar School in Winnsboro. In 1942, he married Ruby Lynn Cunningham of Winnsboro. To this union 11 children were born. He joined the armed services in 1942 and received an honorable discharge in 1944. Pete moved to Amarillo in 1945 and began a long journey as a successful entrepreneur in the community. He was recognized as being the first African-American business owner in downtown Amarillo. Pete Jones was a business owner who possessed numerous talents in the business field. He believed in a strong work ethic which he displayed in his many ventures. His first business venture was a shoe shine parlor located in downtown Amarillo. Later he added a news stand and pool hall. In addition, he attended mechanic school and became a certified mechanic. In the late 1970s, he started an auto body/repair shop which later evolved into Pete Jones Tire Shop located at the corner of Mirror Street and Northeast 24th Avenue. His persevering entrepreneurial spirit, along with a strong work ethic, had made him a role model in this community for some 58 years. He has received numerous awards in the community. One of his most prestigious being a day observed in his honor, "Pete Jones Day," Aug, 27, 1969. He was preceded in death by three children, Billy Wayne Jones, Marcus Delbert Jones and Brenda Kaye Jones; and 11 siblings. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Coulter Road Baptist Church with Ron Whitt, brother, and the Rev. Bryan Knowles officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Reynolds served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II in England, Germany and Belgium. He hauled ammunition to George C. Patton in the European Theater. He worked for the J.R. Porter Ranch, farmed in Clarendon, worked for Jenkins Brick & Supply, and the transportation department at Mason & Hanger - Pantex where he retired after 28 years of employment. He played baseball for Gholston and Clarendon in the Caprock League in the 1950s. He coached YMCA baseball during his four sons' years of growing up in the Palo Duro High School area. He married Charlene Owens on Jan. 19, 1946. He received the American Theater Campaign Medal, EAME Campaign Medal with four Bronze Stars, a Good Conduct Medal and a World War II Victory Medal. He was a member of Operating Engineers and Triple L Club of Coulter Road Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Edgar Lynn Reynolds in 1987; sisters Ella Wells, Bertha Van Meter and Pauline Guthrie; brothers Bill Reynolds, Lloyd Reynolds, Frank Reynolds and Clarence Reynolds; and his parents Robert Oliver and Henrietta Reynolds. Mr. Lovejoy was born on Jan. 19, 1918, in Tipton to the late Marvin Early and Buna (Hasley) Lovejoy. He attended Tipton Public School and graduated in 1936. He served in the Army during World War II. On June, 28, 1941, he and Jean Stone were united in marriage in Sayre. He was a member of First United Baptist Church of Tipton. He was preceded in death by his wife on July 26, 1977; his parents; a son, Larry Lovejoy, who died in infancy in 1946; a brother, Preston Lovejoy, and a sister, Helen Taylor.
