Entombment will be in Memory Gardens Mausoleum by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mr. Rowell was born July 2, 1924, in Commerce. He was a veteran of the Navy, serving in World War II. Mrs. Johnson was born Oct. 24, 1918, in Sunset. She was a teacher's aide for Stratford ISD. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Stratford. She was a Stratford resident for more than 50 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.S. Johnson, in 1983; a son, James Johnson; and a great-grandson, James Ingham. Survivors include a daughter, Nell Ingham and husband, Jim, of Amarillo; a daughter-in-law, Lola Johnson of Stratford; a sister, Zenoba Johnson of Oklahoma City; a brother, Don Craddock of Hollis, Okla.; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Mac was born Oct. 11, 1927, in Pearl. He was a Dumas resident for 50 years before moving to Commerce in 1998. He married Wanda Jean Fletcher Nov. 5, 1948. He was a member of First Christian Church in Dumas. He worked for Phillips Petroleum Co. for 33 years. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Old Timers Rodeo Association and the Texas Rodeo Association. He was preceded in death by his wife on Jan. 4, 1990. Amarillo Globe-News, March 16, 2003 Elsewhere Mary Joyce Organ Gill NEW YORK CITY - Mary Joyce Organ Gill, 67, died Wednesday, March 12, 2003. Memorial services were held Friday at Church of the Resurrection. Arrangements are by John Krtil Funeral Home and Yorkville Funeral Service. Dr. Gill was an associate professor of Spanish when she retired from the university in 1997, after 27 years of service. She was involved in developing university curricula and assisting area schools. Her students and colleagues considered her an exemplary and enthusiastic teacher. In 2001, West Texas A&M University recognized the excellence of these services by awarding Dr. Gill the title of Professor Emerita. She actively participated on university committees and during the late 1980s, she gained notoriety while promoting fair governance in her institution. The daughter of Ruth Bennett and Ben Organ, Mary Gill, affectionately known to her family and friends as Toy, was born in Pampa, Texas, on Jan. 30, 1936. Shortly after, the family settled in southern California and later moved to Bogota, Colombia, where she attended junior high and high school. She completed her secondary education at Montreat High School in North Carolina and attended Panhandle A&M College in Goodwell, Okla. She taught briefly in Bogota before her marriage in 1958 to J.R. Gill. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees from West Texas State University and her doctorate from Texas Tech University. Throughout her life, she was an avid gardener, reader and traveler. Survivors include three children, Vivian Gill and Lauren Gill, both of New York City, and David Gill of Madrid, Spain; a sister, Barbara Jones of New York City; a brother, Richard Organ of Amarillo; two grandchildren; and her former husband, J.R. Gill of Amarillo. The family suggests memorials be to West Texas A&M Department of English and Modern Languages to establish a scholarship fund in Mrs. Gill's name. She and her loving husband immigrated to Amarillo from Germany in 1953. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2002. Amarillo Globe-News, March 16, 2003 Nicholas Alexander Kendall Nicholas Alexander Kendall, 93, of Amarillo died Thursday, March 13, 2003. Mr. Kendall was born Sept. 22, 1909, in Paris, France, to Maria Wilhelmina and Nicholas Alexander Kaldenbach. His parents were Dutch artists working in Paris at the time of his birth. He grew up in Haralem, Holland, where he obtained a degree in mechanical engineering. He came to the United States and attended Oklahoma University where he received additional degrees in geology and petroleum engineering. He worked for Dutch East Shell in Malaysia and later for Shell Oil in Houston. He spoke five languages and worked for the U.S. Government in France and Israel in post war reconstruction. He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge. He retired from the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1976 and moved to Amarillo. He married Hoytt Elizabeth Cates in Houston in 1940. He was preceded in death by his wife. Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Gifford and husband, Gene, of Amarillo; a granddaughter, Kelly Greer and husband, Steve, of Baton Rouge, La.; a grandson, Justin Gifford and wife, Holly; and a great-grandson, Gus Gifford of Amarillo. Georgia St. Mrs. O'Neal married Don on Dec. 13, 1952, in Amarillo and they had been married for 50 years. They moved to Albuquerque, N.M., in 1957, to San Francisco in 1963, to Kansas City in 1965 and back to Amarillo in 1991. She was president of Southwest Garden Club, board of directors of the Amarillo Republican Women and a member of the Randall County Republican Women. She was also a member of St. Thomas Choir and volunteered as a mentor in the Host Program for the Amarillo Independent School District and the Amarillo Little Theater. She was a loving mother and grandmother to her family. Her favorite thing was spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Ross Roberson; and a sister, Thelma Faye Grueter. Rogers, 64, of Amarillo died Friday, March 14, 2003. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in St. Stephen United Methodist Church with the Rev. Georgia St. Mr. Rogers was born March 9, 1939, in Plainview. He graduated from Plainview High School where he lettered in football and basketball. He was captain of the basketball team. He was class favorite and best all-round boy. He was involved with student council, Hi-Y, P.T.S.A. and Letterman's Club. He graduated from West Texas State University with a degree in marketing. He married his college sweetheart, Doris Blasingame, on March 31, 1962. He was the very proud father of a special daughter, Dana Heflin. He had been a resident of Amarillo since 1965. He had been in commercial construction since 1975. In 1982 he was named "Salesman of the Year" at Plains Builders. In 1988 he founded Rogers and Lane General Contractors with a partner, Gary Lane. He loved his work and was proud of his projects. He prized the building projects he did for Roberts Truck Center and West Texas Peterbilt. He was given an "Appreciation" award from Alliance Steel Building Systems for outstanding performance. He battled cancer since 2000. He fought a tough fight and never lost his sense of humor nor his will to live. He was a member of St. Stephen United Methodist Church and the John Mark Sunday School Class. He was preceded in death by his parents, Owens H. Rogers and Shelby M. Rogers. Survivors include his wife, Doris; a daughter, Dana Heflin and husband, Kevin; two sisters, Sylvia Curry and husband, Bill, of Seminole, and Sue Walker and husband, Tom, of Rockwall.
