Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today in Dreamland Cemetery in Turkey. Arrangements are by Myers-Long Funeral Directors. Mrs. Blakney was born Feb. 5, 1921. She married Virgil E. Blakney on Feb. 14, 1940. Survivors include a daughter, Anna Landrum of Lubbock; two brothers, Larry Christian of Lubbock and Jackie Christian of Amarillo; and a grandson. She married Ernest E. "Pete" Nipper in 1928 at Hollis, Okla. Vada was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1994; a son, Basil Dwayne Nipper in 1946; a daughter, Wanda Jeanette Dempsey in 1954; and a brother, Johnny Crawford in 1986. Survivors include a niece, Jan Crawford Alexander of York, Neb.; a nephew, Don Crawford of Sherman; two great-nephews; four great-nieces; five great-great-nephews; and seven great-great-nieces. Burial will be in Stinnett Cemetery by Brown Funeral Directors of Borger. Mr. Swan was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy in the Aleutian Islands. He was a retired operator for Phillips Petroleum Copolymer Plant. Amarillo Globe-News, March 22, 2003 Amarillo Doris Thelma Speir Thomas Doris Thelma Speir Thomas, 90, formerly of Amarillo died Thursday, March 20, 2003, in Seattle. Mrs. Thomas was a lifelong Amarillo resident. She relocated to Seattle in 1995. At the age of 16, she graduated from high school in Walters, Okla. She then attended Cameron College and graduated with a BA from University of Oklahoma in 1933, where she was a member of Mortar Board honors fraternity. Mrs. Thomas then moved to Amarillo where she began a lifelong association with the independent oil and gas industry, first working for Jay Taylor Drilling Co., then Haliburton, and later for Harrington Marsh and Wagner and D.D. Harrington, and finally for Don and Sybil Harrington Foundation. Mrs. Thomas was a pioneer for women in the petroleum industry and was one of the founding members of Desk and Derrick. She served D&D as chapter president in 1961, regional director, national secretary and editor of the Oil Poke. She retired from Harrington Foundation in 1983. In retirement, Mrs. Thomas found time to travel, play bridge, read and visit her children. She participated in the past presidents' club of D&D, and loved dancing and traveling with the Amarillo Senior Citizens Swinging Seniors. She was preceded in death by her husband, H Clay Thomas in 1988. Survivors include three children, Val Thomas of Seattle, Cdr. H Clay Thomas of Bedford, Pa., and JoLynne Thomas Hough of Washington, D.C.; her grandchildren, Leli Thomas, Christa Thomas, Aaron Thomas, H Clay Thomas IV, Joy Thomas, Stacy Hough, Phillip Hough and Lindsay Hough; and four great-grandchildren, Connor Dittmar, Micha Dittmar, Sophie Dittmar and Jamison Dittmar. She was preceded in death by her husband on Feb. 5, 1990.
