Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Bible Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Pierson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Lane Memorial Cemetery by Morrison Funeral Directors. Mrs. Lackey was born March 8, 1930, in Elk City, Okla. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Bible Baptist Church in Sunray for 37 years. She married Wester Lackey on Aug. 31, 1947, in Wheeler. She was a Sunray resident since 1947. Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Candus Tucker and Karen Klim, both of Sunray, and Roxanne Seetin of Perry, Kan.; a son, Wester Lynn Lackey of Mars Hill, N.C.; a brother, Don Donahoo of Enid, Okla.; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Fourth Ave. in Sunray. Amarillo Globe-News, March 27, 2003 James Mack Justiss CLAUDE - James Mack Justiss, 81, died Monday, March 24, 2003, in McAllen. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in First Baptist Church with Dr. Charles Davenport of Tulia and the Rev. Janet Edwards, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Claude, officiating. Burial will be in Claude Cemetery by Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon. Mr. Justiss was born Sept. 2, 1921, in Goodnight, Armstrong County, and was a lifetime Armstrong County resident. He married Lorene Dye on Aug. 20, 1940, in Claude. He was a building contractor from the 1950s through the 1980s. Prior to his retirement, he had built 60 to 70 homes in and around Claude, as well as having helped build the Claude, Goodnight and Clarendon Baptist churches. He also helped in the construction of Clarendon College. In addition to being a contractor, he was engaged in farming and ranching. He was a 50-year member of Claude Masonic Lodge, a member of Scottish Rite, and a member of Panhandle Builders Association. He had served two different terms as mayor of Claude from August 1959 to April 1961, and from April 1977 to April 1981. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Claude. Survivors include his wife, Lorene; two daughters, Ruth Hancock of Clarendon and Evelyn McGowan of Leavenworth, Wash.; a brother, Ralph Justiss of Goodnight; two granddaughters, Amy Dorris and husband, Ken, and Buffy Smith and husband, David; and five great-grandchildren, Eric Dorris, Taylor Smith, Tyler Smith, Brooke Smith and Trenton Smith. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Johnson was born in McLean. He graduated from Friona High School in 1943. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was awarded the Victory Medal. He married Helen Dorothy Dawkins in Plainview in 1951. He then went to work for Bureau of Mines Helium Activity. He then served on the Masterson School Board in Masterson. He also served as fire chief at the Helium Plant. He retired in 1986 after 30 years of service. He was a santa for 12 years at Panhandle-Plains Historical Society Christmas celebrations. Mr. Johnson was a very active member of South Georgia Baptist Church, where he was the church gardener, the money counter, was on the buildings and grounds committee and other various committees at the church. He served as the treasurer for Plantation Acres Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Talihina Johnson; and a brother, Leroy "Jiggs" Johnson. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Richard G. Johnson and wife, Jo Nell, of Georgetown, Kenneth L. Johnson and wife, Jan, of Canyon Lake and Jesse D. Johnson and wife, Marie, of Jasper, Ga.; three sisters, Ellen Ladd of Muleshoe, Jean Hearn of Mesquite and Madge Cannon of Littlefield; his father-in-law, Foy Dawkins of Claude; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was owner of KJ&J Construction. He was an industrial salesman in the oil industry and paper recycling industry for many years. He was preceded in death by his father, Stanley Joe Hooper in 1990. "Bert" Sanchez CLAYTON, N.M. - Alberto F. "Bert" Sanchez, 89, died Monday, March 24, 2003, in Amarillo, Texas. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the church with the Rev. James Vance officiating. Burial will be in Clayton Memorial Cemetery by Hass Funeral Directors. Mr. Sanchez was born in his grandparents home on Jan. 30, 1914, in Clayton, to Alberto F. Sanchez Sr. and Natividad Romero Sanchez. A lifetime resident of Union County, he attended school in the western Union County community of Barney until the sixth grade when he transferred to Clayton. He graduated from Clayton High School in 1932 and managed a ranch and store for his uncle Tobias Sanchez. On May 1, 1934, he married Adelina A. Garcia Sanchez in Clayton and she preceded him in death on Dec. 31, 1980. Alberto owned and operated Robinett's Grocery Store and a Texaco gas station for several years. He also worked for the State of New Mexico's Motor Transportation Department, where he retired as a supervisor for Clayton Port of Entry. Bert was not only a hard worker, but he served his community well. He held two publicly elected offices, serving on Clayton Municipal School District Board as well as being a council member for the town of Clayton. He belonged to several civic organizations, having been a member of Clayton Lions Club for more than 35 years. He was also a member of Coronado Club, Knights of Columbus and St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He was a board member of Retired Public Employees of New Mexico and former president of New Mexico Senior Coalition. He was a lifetime member on the advisory board for Eastern New Mexico Area on Aging, a position he was appointed to by then Governor Gary Carruthers. Alberto was a member of Union County Medical Board and former chairman of Union County Home Health Care Agency. Bert was chairman of Salvation Army's Project Unite, which helped low income elders pay utility bills. He was also a member of Union Comity Historical Society, and in 1995 he received the Distinguished Pioneer Award from Clayton Union County Chamber of Commerce. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; an infant son, Alberto F. Sanchez III; two brothers, Malaquias Sanchez and Alfredo Felix Sanchez; and two sisters, Carlota Sanchez and Anita Park Sanchez. Survivors include two sons, Ricardo T. Sanchez and wife, Phyllis, of El Paso, Texas, and Reinaldo G. Sanchez and wife, Sally, of Clayton; a daughter, Lydia F. Bolk and husband, Bill, of Amarillo; a sister, Veronica Martinez of Albuquerque; nine grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
