Services were on Thursday, March 13, in Eubank Chapel with Dr. Bill Thomas officiating. Special eulogies were by Jerry Stroud, Sharon Fugate, Lavelda Grier and Cindy Anderson. Burial was in Haven of Memories Memorial Park. Mr. Stroud was born Oct. 20, 1921, in Ben Wheeler. He graduated from Wills Point High School and attended the University of Texas. He worked for 38 years in plants in Trinidad, Bonham and Fairfield for Texas Utilities. He volunteered for the Senior Citizen Center and was active in area churches. Mr. Stroud served in the Navy during World War II and was a member of Raleigh Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. He was aboard the ship, Raleigh, which was the first ship struck by Japanese attackers. Aware the foward generator had been knocked out by the torpedo, he rushed below decks and, by himself, got the aft generators operating so the guns could be fired. Raleigh was credited with shooting down four enemy planes and destroying a mini-sub. Mr. Stroud enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching Cowboy and university football games. He moved to Craig Retirement Community in Amarillo and joined St. Paul United Methodist Church. He and his wife, Hazel, were married 58 years. Survivors include his wife; a son, David Stroud and wife, Terrie, of Amarillo; a granddaughter, Erin Nuss of Arlington, a student at University of Texas; a sister, Iola Rorex and husband, Clarence, of Blessing; two sisters-in-law, Dortha Stroud of Greenville and Georgia Stroud of Houston; two brothers-in-law, Troy Roberts and wife, Lois, and T.L. "Soupie" and wife, Marcelle, all of Wills Point; and other survivors include, Eva-Nell Miller, James Fugate, Marlene Miller, Mary Lou Wolfe, Robert Wolfe, Leland Stroud, Jeroline Cerny, Emillia Fischer and Gayle Atto. Amarillo Globe-News, April 2, 2003 Amarillo Betty L. Cunningham Betty L. Cunningham, 79, of Amarillo died Monday, March 31, 2003. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Polk Street United Methodist Church with Dr. Jim Garrett officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mrs. Cunningham was born and raised in Amarillo. She graduated from Amarillo High School. She married Johnie J. Cunningham in Amarillo in 1947. She retired from Texas Employment Commission. She was a lifetime member of Polk Street United Methodist Church and Homebuilder's Sunday school class. Survivors include her husband; two sons, John Robert Cunningham of Lemoore, Calif., and Clay Thomas Cunningham of Amarillo; a sister, Rachel Anderson of Borger; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. The family will be at 4505 Princeton St. Amarillo Globe-News, April 2, 2003 William Dee Wurst William Dee Wurst, 56, of Amarillo died Monday, March 31, 2003. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in First United Methodist Church in Claude with the Rev. Janet Edwards, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Citizens Cemetery in Clarendon by Robertson Funeral Directors. Mr. Wurst was born March 12, 1947, in Pittsburg, Pa., and had lived in Amarillo most of his life. He was employed for several years by the City of Amarillo. He was a Christian. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry F. Wurst in 1995; a sister, Marjorie Albertena Wurst in 1943; and a brother, Henry Francis Wurst in 1989. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Tena and Billy M. Powell of Claude; and four brothers, Robert H. Wurst of Gainesville, Thomas E. Sanders of Amarillo, Anthony Lee Wurst of Seattle and James V. Wurst of Houma, La. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in First Assembly of God with the Rev. Leland Lewis, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mrs. Teague had been a resident of Pampa since 1963, before moving to Richardson in 2001. She was a member of First Assembly of God. Survivors include two daughters, June Wilson of Dallas and Jeanne Fields of Garland; three sons, Robert E. Fletcher of Pampa, Lynn Fletcher of Gainesville and Willard D. Teague Jr. of Nixa, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Mr. Briggs was born Oct. 19, 1962, in Chillicothe. He was a mental health worker at North Texas State Hospital. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Claudia and Charles Colbert of Quanah; his father, Butch Briggs of Memphis; four sisters, Jennifer Ashcraft of Quanah, Melanie Longmiles of Fort Worth, Paulette Burkhart of Lubbock and Tammy Chapman of Vernon; and a brother, Eddy Briggs of Loveland, Colo. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday in Gruver Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman. Mrs. Bort was born July 9, 1904, in Adobe Walls. She was a lifetime resident of the Gruver area. She married Ralph Bort on June 1, 1930, in Gruver. She attended West Texas State Normal College, West Texas State University, University of Southern California and University of Colorado. She taught school in Gruver from 1930 to 1934, and later during World War II. She was a member of Gruver United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school for more than 50 years. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1996; three brothers, Ray Ownbey, Doyle Ownbey and Coy Ownbey; her parents, John and Belle Ownbey; two sisters, Mary Lamb Smith and Ona Faye Watkins; and a granddaughter, Lindsey Jones. Burial will be in Shamrock Cemetery by Wright Funeral Home. Mrs. Lanham was born to Laborn and Minnie Tunnell Triplett in Jethro, Ark., on Jan. 11, 1910. She married Neal Lanham on March 7, 1936, in Seminole, Okla. She moved to Shamrock in 1945. She lived in Wheeler since 1991. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Shamrock, and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was also a member of Order of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1985; and a daughter, Rosemary Westphal. Survivors include a son, James Lanham of Dallas; two granddaughters, Kristen Casenave of Dallas and Lynda Hecht of Florida; and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Scott was born Feb. 8, 1984, in Borger. He made an impression on everyone he met and will be missed by all.
