"Chet" Braafladt, 88, died Friday, April 4, 2003. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Paul Braafladt of Seattle, the Rev. Vergil Ichtertz of First Methodist Church and Chuck Ball of Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in Castro Memorial Gardens by Foskey-Lilley-McGill Funeral Home. Mr. Braafladt was born in Chicago on Jan. 28, 1915. At age 2, he moved to China with his parents where his father was a medical missionary for the Lutheran Church. The family moved back to the United States in 1922. That same year, his mother died and the family moved back to China in 1924. Chet attended and graduated from high school in England in 1930. He married Helen Galloup in San Francisco in 1937. In 1940, he was accepted into the California Highway Patrol. He served in the Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He and his family then settled in Amarillo. They moved to Dimmitt in 1962. He owned and operated Dimmitt 66, Inc. which evolved into Braafladt Transport. He served on the Dimmitt City Council for six years. He was an extremely active member of the Dimmitt Lions Club and is a past Boss Lion. He had been active in Scouting since his youth. He was an Eagle Scout and was the Lions Club liaison with the Boy Scout troop in Dimmitt. He was also active in the Dimmitt Chamber of Commerce and was named Citizen Through the Years at the annual Chamber Banquet in 1996. He was preceded in death by a son, Chuck Braafladt, in 2000; and a sister, Borghlld Ogaard. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Joan Craig of Leander and Jill McLean of Dimmitt; five brothers, Col. J.T.O. Braafladt of Pearland, Halvor Braafladt of Eureka, Calif., Phil Braafladt and Walter Braafladt, both of Sacramento, Calif., and the Rev. Paul Braafladt of Seattle; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, April 7, 2003 Dorothy H. Smith DUMAS - Dorothy H. Smith, 78, died Sunday, April 6, 2003. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in First United Methodist Church of Dumas with the Rev. John Wagoner, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial will be in Dumas Cemetery by Morrison Funeral Directors. Mrs. Smith was born Dec. 1, 1924, in Rush Springs, Okla. She was a Dumas resident for 42 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Dumas and retired as a financial assistant of North Plains Savings and Loan Association. She was a past worthy matron of Eastern Star Chapter No. 653. She was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Todd; a brother, Bob Shore; and a great-grandson. Survivors include her husband, Granville; a daughter, Pam Baker and husband, Don, of Dumas; a son, Bruce Smith and wife, Linda, of Dumas; four sisters, Elsie Taylor Nielson and Lucy Gerhardt, both of Camarillo, Calif., Louise Crabb of Ventura, Calif., and Georgia Watkins of Lovington, N.M.; a brother, Bill Shore of Hereford; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Box 102454, Atlanta, GA 30368-2454. Amarillo Globe-News, April 7, 2003 Delbert M. Williams DUMAS - Delbert M. Williams, 82, died Saturday, April 5, 2003. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in First United Methodist Church of Dumas with the Rev. John Wagoner, pastor of the church, officiating. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the family plot at Carr's Chapel and Cemetery at the Harmony Community, between Petersburg and Floydada, with the Rev. Ted Williams, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Petersburg, and the Rev. Tom Griffin, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Petersburg, officiating. Dumas arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors and other arrangements are by Lemons Funeral Home of Plainview. Mr. Williams was born Dec. 28, 1920, in Akin. He had been a Dumas resident since 1967. He graduated from Petersburg High School in Petersburg in 1938. He served as mayor of Petersburg from 1962 to 1968 and was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Petersburg for 62 years. He was a pilot with the USAAF in the European Theater, flying a C47-C109 Aircraft, 438th Troop Carrier Group. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946. He received a Purple Heart, two air medals and was later awarded the bronze star in 1997 for service in 1945 in the European Campaign. He was owner and operator of Delbert Williams Flying Service from 1961 to 1986. He was a past president of Texas Aerial Applicators Association and helped write and put into effect the present Texas licensing law for all aerial applicators. Between 1986 and 1988, he flew for the federal government in Mexico and flew freight at night before getting back into spraying in 1988 for Sparks Bros. In 2000, after 50 years of spraying, he began as Weather Modification Aviation Supervisor, with North Plains Groundwater District. He had served as airport manager at the Moore County Airport in Dumas and as of 2001 was still flying thunderstorm weather modification. Survivors include a son, Lynn Williams and wife, Patty, of Dumas; a daughter, Linda Freeman and husband, Ronnie, of Lubbock; a sister, Billie Lee Heard of Plainview; grandchildren, Sindy and Darin Green and Tiffeny and Carlos Gonzales, all of Petersburg, Airman First Class Damon Woods, United States Air Force, serving in Japan, Amber Adams of Dumas, Lisa Coffman, Staci Shive and Veronica Freeman, all of Lubbock; and great-grandchildren, Whitley Gonzales, Chaz Gonzales, Karlea Long, Chase Shive, Zachary Freeman and Bryson Shive. The family will be at Delbert's home at the Moore County Airport. The family suggests memorials be to Silent Wings Museum, 6202 N. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Paducah with the Rev. Cameron Givan, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Seigler Funeral Home. Mr. House was born June 15, 1922, in Quinlan to Frank and Nettie Taylor House. He was a farm worker and loved the outdoors. Survivors include three brothers, Frank House Jr. and Luther House, both of Tyler, and Pete House of San Diego; and a sister, Fannie Mae Franklin of Cameron. Trammel, pastor of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Purcell, Okla., officiating. Burial will be in the Clayton Memorial Cemetery by Hass Funeral Directors. Mrs. Kear was born Nov. 22, 1914, in Pennington to Floyd Benton Crist and Ethel Lockhart Crist. She and Beecher moved to Oklahoma City in 1952 and returned to Clayton in 1953. Survivors include two sons, Roland Kear and Rex Kear, both of Oklahoma City; four daughters, Wanda Hamilton and Rita Niece, both of Clovis, Pat Owen and Juanell Dubiel, both of Oklahoma City; a daughter-in-law, Jean Kear of Clayton; two sisters, Mable Root of Denver and Florine Pennock of Las Cruces; three brothers, Douglas Crist and Garland Crist, both of California, and Ronald Crist of Hereford; 21 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, April 7, 2003 Amarillo Jacqueline Sue Burroughs Murff Jacqueline Sue Burroughs Murff, 67, of Amarillo died Sunday, April 6, 2003. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in First United Methodist Church of Tulia. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Mrs. Murff went to be with her angels on Sunday, April 6, 2003. She was our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and mother-in-law. She was born to Shirley Eliza and Francis Marion "Frank" Burroughs in Monahans on Jan. 24, 1936. She met her future husband, Sam, in June 1951 at the age of 15 at MYF at the Oak Park Methodist Church in Corpus Christi. She had come to church with the preacher's son, and Sam informed him that he was taking Jackie home. Dad proposed to Mom in September 1954, set a date of Oct. 23rd and gave Mom only two weeks notice to plan a wedding. They were married at First Methodist Church in Robstown. They spent their honeymoon driving back from Texas to California where dad was stationed at Camp Pendleton Marine Base. Dad was starting a lifelong habit of telling Jackie to hurry up! Mom loved to work in her yard, bowling, golfing, decorating her home, spending time with her beloved grandchildren, and above all, taking care of her husband, Sam. Jackie was a member of First United Methodist Church of Tulia, Colonial Dames, Daughters of the American Revolution and Tulia Progressive Study Club. Sunrise was Jan. 24, 1936; and sunset was April 6, 2003. "He shall give his angels charge over thee to keep thee in all thy ways." Psalm 91:11. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Samuel T. Jr.; and twin daughters, Marian Gail and Monica Lee. Amarillo Globe-News, April 7, 2003 Donald Kimball Donald Kimball, 68, of Amarillo died Saturday, April 5, 2003. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Wildorado Palo Duro Baptist Church with the Rev. Ray Milhoan of the Country Church and Gene Shelburne of Anna Street Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in Palo Duro Cemetery of Wildorado by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Kimball was born in Sentinel, Okla., on Oct. 31, 1934. He moved to Wildorado in 1942 before moving to Amarillo in 1967. He married Frances Crouch in Tucumcari, N.M., on March 13, 1954. He farmed in Wildorado, Dalhart and Dawn. He owned his spray business from 1976 to 1989. He was a member of Paramount Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Robin, in 1958. Survivors include his wife, Frances; two sons, Tim Kimball and Mike Kimball, both of Amarillo; a sister, Wilma Newbill of Amarillo; a brother, Richard Kimball of Odessa; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Burial will be in Memory Garden Cemetery by Brooks Funeral Directors. Mrs. Harris was born in Woodward County, Okla., on Jan. 4, 1923, to S.L. and Laura Brewer. She married William P. Harris in Oklahoma in 1940. Survivors include a daughter, Marjorie McCarty of Canyon; two sons, Charles Harris of McLean and Jimmy Harris of Amarillo; a brother, Jess Brewer of Bushland; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
