"Hal" Ochsner, longtime Amarillo attorney and civic leader, died Tuesday. He was 81. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery East Mausoleum. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors. Harold "Hal" Ochsner was born July 16, 1921, to Hugo and Irma Ochsner in Hermann, Mo. In high school he achieved the award of Eagle Scout. He attended the University of Missouri prior to World War II where he met Rosemary Stephens. They were married on Valentine's Day 1946 in Denver. He was a P-47 fighter pilot with the 80th Fighter Squadron during World War II in the China-Burma-India Theater. He flew more than 160 missions and achieved the rank of captain. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He graduated from the University of Texas Law School in 1949 and moved to Amarillo to set up his private law practice. He retired in 2003 after 54 years. Ochsner's community activities included more than 50 years perfect attendance in the Amarillo Downtown Lions Club where he served in various capacities, including club president and district governor of Lions District 2-T1. In 1981, Ochsner was approved as a Lions Life Member by Lions International. He participated in many Lions Club projects including working at the group's Tri-State Fair booth, writing the charter for the High Plains Eye Bank and running the Lions Turkey Shoot. He was a life member of the Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville. Ed Flood of Amarillo, past international director of Lions International, said Ochsner was one of the most dedicated people to his church, the Lions club and the community. "His passing will be a great loss to the community and we will miss him immensely," Flood said. Jack King, newly-elected district governor for Lions District 2-T1, said Ochsner was one of the stars of the Lions club on a district level as well as the local level. "He was instrumental in projects on sight, including the Hi Plains Eyeglass Program and the District 2-T1 Eye Bank," King said. "He was also instrumental in recruiting into the district level and later into state and national levels. "We've lost a major player. He will be missed." Retired Amarillo businessman Dick Bynum said, "He was an individual who believed in doing it right and getting it done. He and I had been friends in the Downtown Lions Club for 40 years. He was a hardworking volunteer. He knew many people and had many friends," Bynum said. In 1966, his hometown of Hermann, Mo., named him Man of the Year and the Junior Chamber of Commerce gave him its Distinguished Service Award. He was an amateur bowler. In 1969, he received the Sam Fenberg Memorial Bowler of the Year award from the Amarillo Men's Bowling Association. He was chairman of the state tournament for the Texas State Bowling Association in 1969. He served on the board of the High Plains Epilepsy Association and volunteered with the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and the YMCA. He was a past president of the Amarillo Gun Club and served on the Salvation Army advisory board. He was active in the Boy Scouts, Ducks Unlimited, Quail Unlimited, the National Rifle Association, and the Amarillo High School booster club. He was a Mason, a Khiva Shriner and a member of First Baptist Church. In 1989, he ran for Randall County Judge but later withdrew as a candidate. He was a member of the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce board of directors and helped bring the Amarillo Wranglers semi-pro hockey team to Amarillo when he was a member of the Chamber sports committee. Survivors include his wife, Rosemary; two daughters, Dr. Beth Bagwell and husband, Paul, and Kristine Creek and husband, Ross, all of Amarillo; two brothers, John H. Ochsner of Crestwood, Mo., and Winston Ochsner of Tulsa, Okla.; six grandchildren, Dr. Paul Bagwell Jr. and wife, Melissa, of Las Vegas, N.M., Jason Bagwell and wife, Meredith, Kimberly Peet and husband, Tracy, all of Pampa, Justin Bagwell, Candy Dewitz and husband, Jimmy, and Kelli Bagwell, all of Amarillo; a great-grandson, Jackson Warren Bagwell of Pampa; six nieces; and four nephews. He was 80. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Memorial Park Cemetery East Mausoleum. Arrangements are by Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40. Mr. Hill spent most of his childhood on a ranch around the canyons near Cee Vee. He credited his closeness to nature and his early rural experience as a child to his appreciation of the American Indian. He was a 1941 graduate of Amarillo High School, and was inducted into the Sandie Hall of Fame in 1992. While in school he took art courses and did many sketches and oil paintings. During World War II he served with the Army Combat Engineers in Europe. Following his discharge in January 1946, he returned to Amarillo. He was commissioned by the state of Oklahoma to create a bust of Quanah Parker that was placed in the National Hall of Fame for Famous American Indians. The bust is also a part of the collection at Panhandle Plains Historical Museum. His bronzes of the Apache chief Geronimo and the Kiowa leader Satank are part of the collection at the Fort Sill Museum in Fort Sill, Okla., Hill created the white buffalo that marks the home of the West Texas A&M buffaloes at Frank Kimbrough Stadium. He designed the 75th Anniversary Seal of the City of Amarillo, and a bronze statue of Margaret Harper, the founder of the musical "Texas." Charles Ritchie became friends with Hill when Hill's son, King Hill, joined the Kwahadi Indian Dancers. "Jack had the gift of capturing the pride and spirit of the Native American people in his work," Ritchie said, "He was glad to share and talk about his work and the Native American culture." A naturalist and long-time advocate for American Indians, Hill was formally adopted into the Quanah Parker family by elders of the family, with whom he enjoyed a long and close personal friendship.
