Drew Travis, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Plainview, and the Rev. Kenneth Wyatt, retired Methodist minister, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery of Tulia. Hulseys and an only son of E.K. and Lucile Whitlow Hulsey. He graduated from Tulia High School in 1939 and went to Texas A&M that fall. He transferred to Trinity University and married Poppy Galbreath Hulsey on June 10, 1941, and they became permanent residents of Tulia. The Hulseys were Panhandle pioneers of the 1890s and now six generations have lived on, farmed, ranched and loved this land. When World War II started, Kirk was waiting to be called and told the draft board he needed to know if he should get ready to go or get ready to put a crop in. They told him to get to farming. Farming and ranching was his vocation but family life and volunteering have been his vocations. The W.K. Hulsey's have four children, Bill of Millersview, Janie Burrow of Liberty, Mo., Chappy of Austin and David of Amarillo; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Together they have been active in church, school and community. In the early 1970s, Kirk and Poppy became members of the Senior Citizens Board. One of the projects of the Swisher County Historical Commission was the publication of Swisher County's history, "Windmilling." Without Kirk's help, patience and hours of work, the deadlines would never have been met. Another project he was proud to be a part of was the museum's self-publication of the History of Quanah Parker by Bill Neeley. He continued to support the efforts to make this book into a movie. He was chief executive officer of Tulia Savings and Loan. He was part owner of Ziegler Hulsey Oliver Implement Co. Kirk's first love was flying, which he promoted all his life. He got his license in the early 1940s, made a runway in one of his pastures and built some hangars. He got his instructor's rating and soloed at least 40 students. His motto was, "If you don't have time to stay current, then you don't have time to fly". He organized the Swisher County Flying Farmers, helped other counties organize, and served as state president from 1954 to 1956. The airport was designated and the runways paved. He deeded the airport to the City-County but was too modest to let them name it for him. The Hulseys moved to Sun City, Georgetown in February 1997. He enjoyed his retirement years and is survived by his wife of 62 years, his children and many friends throughout the state. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Jane Burrow and husband, Ken; three sons, Billy, Chappy and David; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to the church or the Swisher County Museum in Tulia. Words of comfort may be shared with the family at www.cookwalden.com.
