Smith, 88, died Saturday, June 14, 2003. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First Baptist Church with Dr. Randy White, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. The Rev. Smith was born to Nelson and Ora Sivells Smith on Dec. 28, 1914, in Richland Springs. He attended Richland Springs Schools and graduated from Howard Payne College in 1936. Bro. Smith taught school and coached in several central Texas schools before entering the gospel ministry in 1942. Following pastorates in Agua Dulce, Calallen and Marble Falls. He married Laura Bentley on Nov. 27, 1936, in Richland Springs. Bro. Smith moved his family to the Texas Panhandle, where he pastored First Baptist Church of Wheeler, Highland Baptist Church of Pampa, Alanreed Baptist Church and College Baptist Church of Big Spring. For many years, Bro. Smith was interim pastor for many Baptist churches and supplied in Baptist churches in the Pampa area, as well as teaching science at Pampa High School and Clarendon College Pampa Center. According to Bro. Smith's records, he performed 1,191 funerals, 858 weddings and 421 baptisms, most of them during his years in Pampa. He was preceded in death by his parents; 10 siblings, including his identical twin brother, Baron Haynes Smith of Oklahoma City; Gerald Smith of Corpus Christi; a son-in-law, Harold Loyd Lee; and a granddaughter, Joanie Lee Brogdon. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Sylvia Shuler and husband, Leo, of Wheeler and Marilyn Whitaker and husband, Rex, of Waco; three sons, Philip Smith and wife, Jane, of Sulphur Springs, David Smith of Austin and Herbert Smith and wife, Lynn, of Pampa; his grandchildren, Lucretia Davis and Mike Lee, both of Wheeler, Melanie Gates of Weatherford, Okla., Brent Lee of Killeen, Lori Barnes of Stephenville, Lisa Osborne of Round Rock, Mark Whitaker of Temple, Kristi Whitaker of Rockwall, Jennifer Scogin of Rogers, Ark., Emily Stephen of McKinney, Nathan Smith of Dallas, Courtney Pederson of Fritch, Jonathan Smith of Pampa and Jared Smith of Pampa and Abilene; 28 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nephews and nieces, which include the sons of his twin brother, Barry Smith of Flower Mound and Dr. Nelson Smith of Oklahoma City. Deacons of First Baptist Church of Pampa, Everyman's Bible Class and other pastors and ministers of the area are invited to serve as honorary pallbearers. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in West Park Cemetery in Hereford with Larry Miles, nephew of Mr. Miles, officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home of Amarillo, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Miles was born Dec. 3, 1922, in Hereford. He was a retired lab technician and hospital administrator. He was a resident of Pampa for 25 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Letha; and his parents, E.J. "Jack" and Brulah Miles. Survivors include a sister, Margaret Githens of Gillette, Wyo.; two brothers, David Miles of Amarillo and Bill Miles of Lubbock; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and great-great-nieces. Amarillo Globe-News, June 17, 2003 Bennie Wayne Smith PERRYTON - Bennie Wayne Smith, 83, died Friday, June 13, 2003, in Amarillo. Services were at 2 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church of McLean with the Rev. Wayne Moore, pastor of Clearlake Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Pampa. Mrs. Smith was born July 1, 1919, in Erath County. She married Boyd B. Smith on Dec. 24, 1935, near Alanreed. He preceded her in death May 1, 1982. She had lived in De Soto for several years, where she was a member of a quilting club. She had been a resident of Lefors and McLean for many years before moving to Perryton in 1998. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. She was preceded in death by a brother, George Williams. Survivors include two sons, James B. Smith and wife, Harlene, of Perryton and Fred B. Smith and wife, Pam, of Avon, Ind.; three sisters, Jane Herndon of McLean and Faye Flynn and Sue Green, both of Amarillo; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Armstrong was born Nov. 29, 1924, in Carr City, Okla. He was a substation foreman for Southwestern Public Service Co. Survivors include his wife, Jean; a son, Matt Armstrong of Borger; two daughters, Geneva Gifford and Theresa Anderson, both of Borger; three sisters, Thelma Hayden, Esther Gentry and Jean Lytle, all of Maud, Okla.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Baird was born Sept. 22, 1917, in Independence County, Ark. She married Roy Baird on Dec. 11, 1938, in Oklahoma City. Mrs. Baird was a secretary in the grocery industry and the American Lung Association for more than 50 years. She was an avid reader and loved cooking and sewing. She was a member of Crown Heights Baptist Church, where she taught the same Sunday school class for more than 30 years. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1957. Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Johnson and husband, Dr. Howard, of Hereford and Joni McClure and husband, Bob, of Oklahoma City; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Stover was born Sept. 9, 1924, in Greenville, to Robert Lee Stover and Rosa Ella Clark Stover. She was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses and was a licensed vocational nurse for more than 30 years. She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Trisha Cook in 1980 and Dayton Chennault in 1992; a sister, Lela Stover; and four brothers, Alfred Stover, Dee Stover, Jess Stover and Wilson Stover. Mrs. Mask was born July 7, 1911, in Benson community, Roosevelt County, N.M., to James Davis and Nettie Highland Cyphers. She married W.C. "Carlton" Mask on Nov. 2, 1929, and made her home in Amarillo. She lived in Portales, N.M., from 1984 to 1989. She taught Sunday school for more than 30 years at Second Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband; and her only son, Amil Mask. Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Joy Mask of Amarillo; two grandsons, Russell Mask of Flintstone, Ga., and James Mask of McKinney; a granddaughter, Judy Mundahl of San Antonio; and six great-grandchildren, Caleb Mask, Elizabeth Mask and Hannah Mask, all of Flintstone, and Tim Mask, Tom Mask and DaviAnn Mask of McKinney. Amarillo Globe-News, June 17, 2003 New Mexico Vera Knight Rose TUCUMCARI, N.M. - Vera Knight Rose, 90, died Friday, June 13, 2003. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in Tucumcari Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Scott Seymour, pastor of Center Street United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the family plot at the cemetery by Dunn Funeral Home. Mrs. Rose was born June 17, 1912, in Lakeview, Texas. At the age of 3 years she and the Knight family moved to Quay County. She graduated from Porter High School in 1929 and attended Montezuma Baptist College and Wayland Baptist College. She received a B.A. degree in teaching in Las Vegas. She taught school at Porter and Endee and then moved to Tucumcari where she retired from teaching in 1976. She had made her home in Amarillo, Texas, since 1995. She was a member of the Retired Teachers of Quay County, Tucumcari Art League, the Tucumcari Historical Museum, and the New Mexico Association of Educational Retirees. She was chosen Teacher of the Year in Tucumcari before her retirement from the Tucumcari school system. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Lola Knight; and four nephews, Aubrey Knight, James Knight, Donald Knight and Ronald Knight. Survivors include a sister, Bertha Harred of Alvin, Texas; three nieces including Dollene Douglas of Alexandria, La.; and a nephew, Tommy Knight of California. Mrs. Coots was born Oct. 3, 1913, in Rosebud. She was a bank teller in Nara Visa and later at Citizen's Bank in Tucumcari, where she retired. Survivors include a daughter, Janie Dale Hart of Ackerly, Texas; numerous grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
