He enjoyed snow skiing, softball and football. He was baptized on Nov. 13, 1988, in Lamount Drive Baptist Church in Amarillo. He attended Lifeway Fellowship Baptist Church. He was the former owner and operator of a service station and truck stop. Mr. Bird served in the Army during the Korean War. Mr. Austin was born Dec. 13, 1927, in Vegreville, Alberta, Canada, to Helen and Claude Austin. He graduated from Price College in Amarillo. He married Dolores Folkner in Amarillo. Mr. Austin was in the Texas National Guard for nine years. He retired from Amarillo National Bank Trust Fund after 23 years. Mr. Austin was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and served as Eucharist minister for many years. He was past president, life member and Hall of Fame bowler with Amarillo Bowling Association. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Wilfrid, George and Walter Austin, and a sister, Jean McCorkle. Survivors include his wife, Dolores; a son, Carl C. Before moving to Amarillo, Lou was employed by Dunn & Bradstreet in Kansas City, Mo., for several years. She also worked at Amarillo Air Force Base and Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis, N.M., for a number of years. Mrs. Hardy was a member of Order of the Eastern Star Lodge No. 787 for more than 40 years. She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, VFW Ladies Auxiliary and a member of Amarillo Senior Citizens Association. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond E. Work and her second husband, Morris "Red" Hardy. Mr. Edwards was born July 15, 1942, in Rising Sun, Md., to Kenneth and Minerva Riley Edwards. He had lived in Wheeler for the past 50 years and attended Wheeler schools. He married Ruth Ann Lott on March 10, 1961, in Wellington. He was a self-employed truck driver and had worked for Heritage Beef Cattle Co. the past eight years. He was a veteran of the Army serving in Korea. Mr. Edwards was a member of the Baptist Church and American Legion. He was raised by his grandparents and considered his aunts and uncles as brothers and sisters. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Gwyn and Eunice Edwards, his father, Kenneth, and a brother, Glen. "Pete" Jones, 81, died Monday, June 30, 2003. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Johnson-Moore Funeral Home Chapel in Denison. Burial will be in Georgetown Cemetery. Mr. Jones was born Oct. 18, 1921, in Pottsboro, to the late C.P. Jones Sr. and Emma Lee Cartwright. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served in World War II. He married Betty Ruth Jones on Feb. 2, 1946, in Denison. He worked for Pete Hudgins of Sherman from 1946 to 1951. He was a ranch hand for Bryant-Edwards Ranch of Henrietta for 45 years until he retired in 1996. He moved to Lockney from Henrietta in 1996. Survivors include his wife; a son, Cecil Jones of Lockney; two brothers, Curtis Jones of Abilene and Jack Jones of Denison; a niece, Elizabeth Ann Honea of Canyon; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Amarillo Globe-News, July 2, 2003 Neill Roach Spence DALHART - Neill Roach Spence, 93, died Sunday, June 29, 2003. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, July 11, in Memorial Park Cemetery in Dalhart with the Rev. Barry Walker of First Christian Church officiating. Arrangements are by Horizon Funeral Home. Mr. Spence was born Nov. 22, 1909, in El Paso, to Andrew Doak Spence and Myrtle Roach Spence. He was raised in Tucumcari, N.M., where he graduated from high school in 1928 as a standout athlete. He attended Montezuma College in Las Vegas, N.M., where he studied psychology. In 1936, he married Maureen Brown. The couple was blessed with one child, Nancy Rene' Spence McCleskey. During the depression of the 1930s, Mr. Spence led a survey team with the Bureau of Reclamation that designed the Works Progress Administration (WPA) canals around Tucumcari. After completion of the project he remained with the State of New Mexico as a port of entry officer. In 1941, he began his career with the Rock Island Railroad and relocated to Dalhart. He quickly advanced from brakeman to conductor and headed regional labor relations. Throughout the 1960s until his retirement in 1974, he was vice-chairman of Rock Island Trainsman Union with offices in Dalhart and Chicago. Mr. Spence was always proud of the gentleman he hired and represented. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a lifetime member of the Shriners. After his retirement he enjoyed tennis, cycling, traveling, volunteering and visiting at the local auto dealership. Mr. Spence will be most remembered for his charismatic charm and sharp appearance. He was preceded in death by his wife, his daughter and two brothers, Jack Spence and Guy Spence. Survivors include two granddaughters, Kimberly Neill McCleskey Dryden and Leslie McCleskey Cunningham, both of Amarillo; two great-grandchildren, Katherine Rene Dryden and Matthew Lyon Dryden; a sister, Joy Shockley of Santa Fe, N.M.; and a brother, Richard D. Donald Price officiating. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery in Canadian, Texas, with the Rev. Larry Bradshaw officiating. Mrs. Thompson was born Nov. 22, 1932, in Endee. She married Eugene Thompson in Briscoe, Texas, on June 2, 1951. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Bertha Cassingham of Carlsbad; a brother, T.L. Murray of Pampa, Texas; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Shaw was born March 26, 1914, in Enid. She moved to Amarillo in 1934, living here for 50 years, before moving to California. Amarillo Globe-News, July 2, 2003 Mary Ann "Mickey" McDaniel LUBBOCK - Mary Ann "Mickey" McDaniel, 61, died Monday, June 30, 2003. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Greenlawn Church of Christ with Dub Hanel officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park by Resthaven Funeral Home of Lubbock. Mrs. McDaniel was born Dec. 8, 1941, in Hollis, Okla. She married Raymond McDaniel on Feb. 1, 1958, in Plainview. Mickey was a longtime bookkeeper working for Bates-Wells Advertising Agency and Lubbock Christian University. She volunteered at Covenant Medical Center helping with the diabetic support groups. She was awarded the Gold Medallion for living with diabetes for over 50 years. Mickey was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who loved her grandchildren dearly. She had been a member of Greenlawn Church of Christ since 1973. She was preceded in death by her brother, Buddy Wynn of Lubbock and her parents, L.F. and Gertrude Wynn. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Billy and his wife, Karla, and their children, Wesley and Sarah of Littlefield, and Barry of Lubbock; two brothers, Ralph Wynn of Lubbock and Eddie Wynn of Amarillo; and two sisters, Joyce Scott and Jimmie Tipton, both of Amarillo. Mrs. Briggs was a CPA and worked for many years as the director of finance at the Panhandle Regional Planning Commission.
