Amarillo Globe-News, July 7, 2003 Russell Lee Scott EDMOND, Okla. - Russell Lee Scott, 90, died Friday, July 4, 2003. Services will be at 11 a.m. today in Memorial Road Church of Christ. Burial will be in Amarillo, Texas, by Matthews Funeral Home. Mr. Scott was born Oct. 12, 1912, in Chilton County, Ala. He was the fifth child and learned the ethics of hard work and family. He spent his life working, picking cotton from age 5 to 20. He took some time off to fight for our country during World War II. After the war, he moved to Amarillo and worked as a produce salesman, furniture store owner and maintenance man. He and his wife, Lavern, moved to Edmond in 1998. He was a longtime employee of Homeland grocery where he was loved and will be missed greatly. He was a faithful Christian and a wonderful man. Survivors include his wife; a son, Mickey Banister and wife, Jane, of Edmond; two granddaughters, Ali Compton and husband, Ben, of Skiatook and Carrie Schaefer and husband, Greg, of Edmond; a great-granddaughter, Isabel of Edmond; and numerous nieces and nephews. Charles Davenport, pastor of First Baptist Church in Tulia, officiating. Arrangements are by Wallace Funeral Home. Mrs. Ruland was born June 21, 1917, in Reeds, Mo., to Murry and Mabel Howard. She married Arthur Ruland on Nov. 20, 1938. Barnes HALE CENTER - C.W. Barnes, 86, died Saturday, July 5, 2003. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Norton Scrimshire, cousin of the deceased, and the Rev. Jimmy Cameron, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Hale Center Cemetery by Freeman-Abell Funeral Home. Mr. Barnes was born April 17, 1917, in Dimmitt. He enlisted in the Army in 1941, serving during World War II, and was discharged in 1944. He married Francis Heavener in 1949 in Albuquerque, N.M. She preceded him in death in 1975. He lived in New Mexico until 1962 when he moved to Hale Center. He was employed by the Caudle Gin and Bowen Gins while living in Hale Center. He married Willo Dene Cornett Overby on June 18, 1980, in Littlefield. She preceded him in death on March 24, 2000. He was a member of the Hale Center First United Methodist Church. Survivors include two brothers, George S. Barnes of Amarillo and Wesley Barnes of Plainview; a sister, Martha Lee Barnes of Plainview; two stepsons, Michael Overby of Hale Center and Leon Overby of Denton; and a stepgranddaughter, Brandi Overby of Hale Center. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Plainview. Mr. Whitfield was born in Pluto, Ellis County in 1923. He attended school in Olton and Plainview. He married Allie Mae Morton on March 28, 1942. Since 1961 he had lived in Dumas and retired from Contel-GTE. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 1009 and the Bible Baptist Church. He was an active volunteer at St. Mary's Catholic School. He was a loving husband and a very dedicated father. She married Tom Butler in 1948 in Frankfurt, Germany. She was a HOSTS mentor and also a member of St. Hyacinth's Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Butler, in 1986; and an infant son in 1954. He passed away in 2000. She owned and operated "Yours Truly Beauty Nook" before retiring as a baker from the Wilmington School System in 1978. She was an active member of PEO Chapter Z of Amarillo. She was a past matron and 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and also a member of St. Luke's Presbyterian Church. She will always be remembered for her Blue Ribbon-winning apple pie. Osage St. Mr. McClenny was born in Amarillo and lived here all his life. He married Linda Morgan in 1971 at Augusta, Ga. He served in the Army Reserves during Vietnam and served overseas in Desert Storm from 1990-1991. He retired after 20 years as a major in 1996. He worked for SBC telephone and was a pioneer with the company. He also was a registered nurse. He was a member of Paramount Terrace Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his mother, Opal O. McClenny in 1990.
