All Obits - Text Only Publication Date: 07/26/03 Ida R. Lowry Hendrick GRUVER - Ida R. Lowry Hendrick, 85, died Thursday, July 24, 2003, in Guymon, Okla. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Scott Curry officiating. Family burial will be at 11 a.m. today in Gruver Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman. Mrs. Hendrick was a member of First Baptist Church of Gruver. She was a longtime employee and supervisor at the Gruver school cafeteria. Survivors include a daughter, Sue Deakin of Gruver; two sons, Larry J. Lowry of Dumas and Tom Lowry of Valley View; three brothers, Tom Fleming of Nevada, Mo., Richard Fleming of Fort Scott, Kan., and Ralph Fleming of Accokeek, Md.; two sisters, Naomi Lawrence of Nevada, Mo., and Marilyn Shaffer of Topeka, Kan.; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. The family suggests memorials be to First Baptist Church of Gruver. Amarillo Globe-News, July 26, 2003 Jerral S. Mayes HAPPY - Jerral S. Mayes, 75, died Friday, July 25, 2003, in Amarillo. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in First Baptist Church of Happy with the Rev. Paul Burwash, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Happy Cemetery by Holley Funeral Home of Canyon. Mr. Mayes was born Aug. 13, 1927, in Memphis, to Charles W. Mayes and Bertha Peirce. He was a veteran of the Korean War, a member of the Baptist church, and a retired carpenter from West Texas A&M. He married Mary Frances Cox on June 7, 1947, in Olney. Survivors include his wife; a son, Jerral L. Mayes of Happy; two daughters, Glinda Dempsey and Linda Swanson, both of Tulia; a sister, Linda Standley of Mansfield; a brother, J.I. Mayes of Amarillo; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to First Baptist Church of Happy building fund or Happy Ambulance Service. Mrs. Adams was born Feb. 18, 1956, in Torrance, Calif. She married Dan Adams on Sept. 18, 1982, in Pampa. Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Jen Lewis and Angela Adams, both of Skellytown, and Renee Darce Adams of Amarillo; a son, Jed Adams of Skellytown; three sisters, Karen Fletcher of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Sandy Winegeart and Susan Barnhart, both of Oklahoma City; a brother, Jerry Lewis of McKinleyville, Calif.; and a granddaughter. Amarillo Globe-News, July 26, 2003 Amarillo Thomas F. Schmidel Thomas F. Schmidel, 69, of Amarillo died Wednesday, July 23, 2003. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday in Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors Bell Avenue Chapel, 5400 S. Bell St. Mr. Schmidel was stationed in Korea in the Navy. He was active with friends and was known for doing lots of crafts. Survivors include three sons, Thomas F. Schmidel Jr. of Irving, Gregory L. Schmidel of South Carolina and Lance L. Schmidel of Fort Worth; his mother, Helen Schmidel of North Carolina; a sister, Elizabeth M. Greider of North Carolina; two brothers, John H. Schmidel of Anchorage, Alaska, and Robert S. Schmidel of Hawaii; and five grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, July 26, 2003 Dale Hess Dale Hess, 71, of Amarillo died Thursday July 24, 2003. Memorial Services will be at 3 p.m. today in Southwest Church of Christ with Gregg Wingrove officiating. Arrangements are by Rector Funeral Home, 2800 S. Osage St. Mr. Hess was born in Hugo, Colo., and moved to Colby, Kan., at the age of 5 in 1937, where he graduated high school in 1950. Mr. Hess then attended college for one year at Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar, Mo. He returned from college and married Donna Garrett on July 13, 1952. He served two years in the Army and retired from the Army National Guard as a captain after 18 years of service. After serving in the Army, he worked with his father and brother in a family owned lumber company in Kansas. He moved to Amarillo in 1993 and was employed by Canyon Drive Lumber company. He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Carmen Hess; and a granddaughter, Sarai Wingrove. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Dalene Hess of Forest Grove, Ore., Tina Wingrove of Amarillo and Mary Strayer of Kimberly, Idaho; a son, Kirk Hess of Riverside, Mo.; a brother, Dean Hess of Winfield, Kan.; and two sisters, Marilyn Wylie of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Wanda Davis of Colby, Kan. Slaughter, 81, of Amarillo died Wednesday, July 23, 2003. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. today in Memorial Park Cemetery with Dr. Chester Beavers officiating. Arrangements are by Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40. Mr. Slaughter married Faye Blue on May 5, 1942, in Frankston. He was a member of the Baptist church. He was in the Army during World War II. He retired from Golden Light Equipment, where he was a refrigeration mechanic. He was preceded in death by his wife, Faye; and a son, Dennis Slaughter. Survivors include two daughters, Helen Johnson of Fort Worth and Janie Slaughter Clay of Amarillo; two brothers, Bill Slaughter of Lubbock and Floyd Slaughter of Lufkin; a sister, Jackie Roper of Amarillo; and five grandsons. The family suggests memorials be to Meals on Wheels. Amarillo Globe-News, July 26, 2003 New Mexico J.D. Johnson CLOVIS, N.M. - J.D. Johnson, 88, died Thursday, July 24, 2003. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in First Christian Church with Jon Forrest officiating. Burial will be in Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens by Muffley Funeral Home. Mr. Johnson married Ruby Faye Simms on Feb. 27, 1937, in Walters, Okla. He was a member of Clovis Masonic Lodge and the Shriners. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Mike Johnson of Clovis and Tom Johnson of Phoenix; and two grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, July 26, 2003 Elsewhere Colleen Lazenby Weeks HONOLULU - Colleen Lazenby Weeks, 71, died Thursday, July 10, 2003. Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. (Hawaii time) today in Light of Hope Ministries in Honolulu. Mrs. Weeks was born in Amarillo. She lived much of her life in the western half of the United States, and returned when her mother, Maxine Lazenby, returned in the early 1970s. She spent her life as a saleswoman, home-health worker and certified nurses aide. She received honors and awards for the poetry she wrote and loved traveling and reading Christian books. In her last three years, because of poor health, she moved with her family to Hawaii, where she loved the birds, the flowers, the ocean and the architecture. Survivors include a son, Ronald Jones; a daughter, Marlene Jones-Skurtu; a granddaughter, Jasmine Skurtu; and three grandsons, Johanan, Jeremiah and Joshua Skurtu.
