Interstate 40. Mrs. Holland was a longtime resident of Amarillo and Dallas and had resided in Tyler since 1996. After graduating from Canyon High School, she worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. until her retirement. She was involved with several clubs in Amarillo, the Pioneer Women's Club, Women's Shrine and the Newcomer's Club. She was a member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church for many years. She will be missed by all who knew her. May God grant us treasured memories of her to fill our hearts. She was preceded in death by her husband, H.P. "Jack" Holland. Hoyne LAKE MEXIA - Edward Joseph "E.J." Hoyne, 66, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in St. Mary's Church with the Rev. Benjie officiating. Arrangements are by Blair-Stubbs of Mexia. Mr. Hoyne was born and raised in Chicago. He joined the Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1958 as a jet mechanic. He then worked as the credit manager for the Amarillo Southwestern Public Service Co. until 1971 at which time he worked as an Allstate Insurance Agent until he retired in 1992 and moved to Lake Mexia. He also worked part-time as a certified flight instructor in Amarillo. He was a Catholic. He was preceded in death by a sister, Kathleen, in 1955; and his parents, Carmella and Edward W. Hoyne in 1992. Mr. Hinton was born Jan. 6, 1920, in Cole. He served his country in the Army during World War II in the European Theater. Darrell Burton, chaplain of Crown of Texas Hospice, officiating. Burial will be in Groom Cemetery by Adams Funeral Home. Mr. Helm was born Jan. 8, 1927, to Jodie and Dessie Ashmead Helm in Jericho. He was a veteran, serving in the Navy during World War II. He graduated from West Texas State University in Canyon with a bachelor of science degree. He married Jane Donaldson on June 6, 1948, in Wheeler. He worked as a Field Service Engineer at General Dynamics for 28 years. This job took him to seven different states and two foreign countries. He also was a coach and history teacher at Allison High School. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Groom. He was preceded in death by his wife on May 31, 2003. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors, Colonial Chapel in Pampa, with Randy Byrd, pastor of the Barn Church in Hereford, and Andy Taylor, pastor of Trinity Fellowship Church in Sayre, Okla., officiating. Mr. Wilcox was born July 10, 1961, in Dimmitt and was a 1979 graduate of Fort Stockton High School in Fort Stockton. He married Pam Dietz on Sept. 10, 1982, in Cleo Springs, Okla. He was a maintenance supervisor for Compressor Systems, Inc., for the past seven years. He was a cowboy and active in junior rodeo with his children. He was a former member of Miami Masonic Lodge and was an active participant in bluegrass music. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors, Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street, with Ray Guy, of West Amarillo Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Dixon was born in Hooker, Okla., the youngest of three children to William and Rosa. He grew up in the Dumas farming area and went to Dumas High School. He was a longtime resident of Amarillo having retired from the Department of Interior, Helium Operations. He served as a staff sergeant in the Texas State Guard until it was disbanded. He entered the Navy on June 4, 1943, and served with the Sea Bees in Hawaii. He received an honorable discharge on Sept. 30, 1945. On Nov. 1, 1947, he married Tillie Eudell Peters. To this union, two daughters were born. He had been a member of West Amarillo Christian Church since 1959. He was preceded in death by his wife. Survivors include two daughters, Sheila Lynn McElroy and husband, Jack, of Longview and Sharon Rose Davidson and husband, Eldon, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and a grandson, Aaron Joseph Davidson of Colorado Springs. Kirk. A lifelong resident, she attended Amarillo High School, Gulf Park College in Gulfport, Miss., and the University of Texas at Austin, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. She was active in many community services including the Junior League, Meals-on-Wheels and the hospital auxiliary. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon and elder and had taught Sunday school for many years in the primary department. She also served on the American Cancer Society board. She married George H. Caufield on May 14, 1943, in Amarillo. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Kathrine Wilson. Smothers Rose G. Smothers, 94, of Amarillo died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in San Jacinto United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Fitzgerald and the Rev. Bobby Medford officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mrs. Smothers was born Dec. 9, 1908, in Armington, Ill., to James and Anna Brandt McDowell. The family, including eight children, moved to Farwell in 1917. The family lived in a tent while building a house. Rose moved to Clovis, N.M., in 1924, graduating from high school in 1925 at the age of 16. She then attended one year of business school. She began her career in business in 1926 for J.C. Penney. She worked for several corporations and lived in many locations throughout the country, retiring in 1984 from Cornell and Co. CPA firm in Amarillo. She married Melvin J. "Red" Smothers in 1939. She was a longtime member of San Jacinto United Methodist Church, serving on many committees including chairman of the administrative board. She served the Pilot Club of Amarillo in numerous capacities including president. She was an avid bridge player. She remained an active volunteer until her move to Clovis in May 2003. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1975; her parents; eight brothers and sisters. Survivors include two sons, Carter Smothers and wife, Joanne, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Raymond Smothers and wife, JoAnne, of San Antonio; five step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews including Kathy Holland Martin of Amarillo. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Christ Lutheran Church with Mark Cattau officiating. Cremation will be by N.S. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd. Interment will be in Rembrandt, Iowa, at a later date. Mr. Obman spent several years after high school driving trucks and working on the home place for his dad. He married Jean on July 29, 1956, in Rembrandt at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, where he was a member. Dale served in the Army from 1957 to 1959. In 1977, they moved to Hereford, where he worked for Iowa Agra Nomics. They later moved to Amarillo where Dale worked for Amarillo Road from 1986 to 1994. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening and family gatherings. Survivors include his wife, Jean Obman; two daughters, Julie Mitchell Vigil and husband, Johnny, of Amarillo and Debbie Obman and husband, Mario Gamez, of Amarillo; a son, John Obman and wife, Mary, of Amarillo; a mother-in-law, Beulah Hegna of Rembrandt; two brothers, Kenneth Obman and Richard Obman of Rembrandt; two sisters, Phyllis Thayer of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Donna Muilenberg of Milford, Iowa; five grandchildren, Joe Gonzalez, Brittney Obman, Andrew Mitchell, Scottie Brewer and Jacob Brewer, all of Amarillo; and a great-grandchild, William Brewer of Amarillo. Amarillo Globe-News, Aug. 3, 2003 Rube Marion McClain Rube Marion McClain, 73, of Amarillo died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, Bell Avenue Chapel, 5400 S. Bell St., with Mark Zimmerman, pastor of Paramount Terrace Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mr. McClain was born in Quail, Collingsworth County. He was the first-born son to Rube McClain and Angie Clara Calloway. He attended Wellington schools and was a graduate of the class of 1948. He graduated from Amarillo College in electronic engineering. He lived in Roswell, Alamogordo and Carlsbad, N.M., before moving to Pampa. He had lived in Pampa for more than 25 years before moving to Amarillo. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wellington where he was baptized as a young man. He married Catherine Joy Payne Johnson on Feb. 22, 1976, in Carlsbad. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys football fan, golfer and fisherman. He was very family oriented and took great pride in the accomplishments of his grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and great-nieces and nephews. He died following a car accident in Wellington. Pallbearers are Gary Swinney, J.B. Andrews, Bob Dobbins, Pat Langford, Mark Martin, John Dobbins, Bryon Rogers and Brent Hickmott. He was preceded in death by his wife; his father and mother; a nephew, M.K. He attended Lamar Elementary School where he played Little League Baseball, and then went to Fannin Middle School and played football, basketball and baseball. He attended Caprock High School where he played varsity football for three years under coach Preston Smith, playing center and defensive tackle and was captain of the football team. He also played varsity baseball for four years as catcher. He was awarded the title of most valuable player in football and baseball. He was an All-District center in football and All District catcher in baseball. He was a member of the National Honor Society and also belonged to the Longhorn Amigos, a club to keep kids out of Drugs and drinking, as well as being involved with Young Life, a Christian organization. He graduated from Caprock High School in 1996. He attended Amarillo College studying business and automotive. In 2001 he entered the Amarillo Police Academy and graduated in March 2002. He married Jessica Eva Teague Jan. 9, 1999. He and Jessica attended Caprock High School together, where they were voted Senior Boy and Senior Girl of Caprock High School. Amarillo Globe-News, Aug. 3, 2003 Margaret Jane "Peggy" Stack Margaret Jane "Peggy" Stack, 79, of Amarillo died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003. Garrett, senior pastor of Polk Street United Methodist Church, officiating. Committal services will be at 10 a.m. in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Ms. Stack was born in Amarillo, and was the fourth child of Hal and Ethel Ledford Stack. She was crippled by arthritis when she was 17 years old and spent a great deal of time in hospitals all over the country. She attended Amarillo High School and Amarillo College. She took writing and composition from Lula Grace Erdman at West Texas State University and even had a short story published. Her love of literature and writing remained always. She was an active member of the WAGs and The Book Club. She had a quick wit and was an avid bridge and Scrabble player. She had her real estate license and also kept books at one time for the Tri-Way Garage. She was a longstanding member of the Junior League of Amarillo and served on their board as corresponding secretary and ticket chairman for their follies. She remained an active member of the Garden Club and the Last Hurrahs. She taught the Susanna Wesley Sunday school class and was an inspiration to all who knew her. She took an active role in her family's lives. She was beloved and so admired and will be sorely missed. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, William C. Stack. Survivors include three sisters, Martha Nell Miner and husband, Bruce, Mary Ware and husband, Tol, and Virginia Thornton and husband, George; her devoted caregiver, Princess Wilson; six nephews, Hal Miner, Richard Ware, Bill Ware, Clay Thornton, Bill Thornton and Michael Andrew "Mat" Thornton; a niece, Martha Walton; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Body of Christ at Amarillo South Church with Brad Small officiating. Entombment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40. Mr. Fisher was born to Daniel and Nancy Fisher in Abilene. He graduated from Kermit High School and Amarillo College of Vocational Arts. He was proud of having achieved the rank of Eagle Scout while in high school. He married his wife, Gwen, on July 19, 1978. He was president of Louis Fisher Refrigeration, founded in 1980 by him and Gwen. He was a member of the Body of Christ at Amarillo South. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a friend to many and was an especially devoted granddad. Survivors include his wife; a son, Tom Hanson and wife, Ginger, of Amarillo; his mother, Nancy Fisher of Odessa; a brother, Rusty Fisher of Frisco; two grandsons, Colton and Tommy; and a granddaughter, Amy. Amarillo Globe-News, Aug. 3, 2003 Amarillo Alton Benton Hankins Alton Benton Hankins, 86, of Amarillo died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Mr. Hankins was born in Gorman. He graduated from Texas Tech University and attended the University of Texas where he earned his law degree in 1940. He married Tommie Davenport at Lakeview in July 1940. They moved to Amarillo in 1950. He was a partner in the law firm of Simpson, Adkins, Fullingim & Hankins when it merged with Gibson, Ochsner, Harlan, Kinney & Morris in 1969 to form Gibson, Ochsner & Adkins. He and Mrs. Hankins traveled extensively for many years. After returning from foreign countries, he always said, "No matter what might be wrong with the country, it is still the best in the world." Mr. Hankins served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He attained the rank of lieutenant commander. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ben Hankins M.D. of Midland and Terry Hankins of Austin; five grandchildren, Joshua Hankins of Midland, Allison McCollum and Lauren Hankins of Woodstock, Ga., and Edward T. Hankins and Julia L. Hankins of Austin; and one great-grandchild, Valerie McCollum of Woodstock.
