Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today in Center Plains Chapel with the Rev. Ava Berry, United Methodist Church district superintendent of Plainview district, and the Rev. Stacy Conner, pastor of First Baptist Church in Muleshoe, officiating. Masonic graveside services will follow. Arrangements are by Wood-Dunning Funeral Home of Plainview. Mr. Masters was born on July 13, 1913, at Pond Creek, Okla., and moved to Cotton Center in 1930. He farmed and owned a fertilizer business at Cotton Center for several years. He was the founder of the Hale County Farm and Ranch Museum at Hale Center and served on the historical commission in addition to the history and archives commission of the Northwest Texas Methodist Conference. He was named the first Pioneer Man of the Plains in May of 2003 at the Pioneer Days Reunion at Plainview. He helped found the Boys Ranch Division of the Methodist Home at Waco. He founded the Northwest Texas Chapter of the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation in 1956. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and was past Master of Lemond Lodge No. 832 A.F.&A.M. in Hale Center where he received the golden trowel and 50-year member awards. Survivors include his wife, Florence; a son, Wesley Will Masters of Cotton Center; four stepchildren, James Wilson of Wylie, Marvin Wilson of Amarillo, Mary Ethel Henry of East Barnard and Jean Wilson of Canyon; three sisters, Gladys Hail of Hale Center, Fern Shollenbarger of Fresno, Calif., and Francis Ketron of Richmond, Ind.; three brothers-in-law, Warren Driver of Brownwood, J.W. Doug DuBose, retired Baptist minister, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mrs. Vantine was born Sept. 14, 1914, in Hollis, Okla. She received a bachelor's degree from Southwestern Oklahoma University in Weatherford, Okla., a master's degree in education from West Texas State University in Canyon and a master's degree in religion from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. She had been a resident of Pampa since the 1950s where she taught in Pampa schools for 20 years, retiring in 1975. She was also a teacher in Oklahoma schools and in Phillips and was a real estate agent for Quentin-Williams Realtors. She was a Baptist church staff worker in Texas and Louisiana. She married John Logan Vantine on Dec. 21, 1957, in Pampa. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, Women's Missionary Union, Southwestern Oklahoma University Alumni and the Alumni Association of the SWBTS. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Pampa. She was preceded in death by her husband on March 1, 1977; her parents; and a brother. Survivors include a brother, Gerald B. She also lived in Higgins, Okla., and Vici, Okla. She worked as a cosmetologist. She was a Christian. Mr. Crooks was born Feb. 4, 1938, in Montgomery, Ala., the son of Robert and Mary Crooks. He was an accountant for more than 45 years. He married June Ray on Aug. 6, 1966, in El Paso. He was a veteran, having served in the Army, and was a civil service employee and a member of Frio Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Ken. Goodin, 87, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Janet Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Claude Memorial Park Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, Armstong Chapel of Claude. Mr. Goodin was born March 29, 1916, in Armstrong County, the fifth child of Emery J. and Clara Brunson Goodin. He was a resident near Claude all his life, residing on the same property from age 18 months. He entered the Air Force on Oct. 24, 1941, and was discharged on Sept. 8, 1945. He served as an airplane maintenance technician and engine mechanic for three years and one month overseas in Australia, New Guinea, North Solomon Islands and the South Philippines and the balance of his service time at bases in Missouri, New York and California. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Claude, Claude Lodge No. 719, American Legion Post No. 344 at Claude and a past member of Range Riders, Dallas Scottish Rite and Khiva Temple. On Dec. 6, 1947, he married Betty J. Everett at Vega. They resided on his farm southwest of Claude where he farmed and ranched until his death. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and four sisters. Survivors include his wife; a sister, June Gibbs of Fort Worth; a sister-in-law, Frances Goodin of Amarillo; and many nieces and nephews. Amarillo Globe-News, Aug. 31, 2003 Amarillo Glenn Allen Howard Glenn Allen Howard, 76, of Amarillo died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in East Amarillo Church of Christ with Fred Riley, minister, and Cecil Burch, minister, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Mr. Howard was born in Dodd City. He received his bachelor of science degree in physical education at North Texas State University in 1949 and his master's degree in 1957 where he qualified for a number of administrative certificates, one being a driver's education instructor. He later started the driver's education program at the old Amarillo High School. He had only one car and worked a 12-hour day during the summer. When his athletic job became full-time, he left the program with 40 cars and twice that many drivers. He taught at Elizabeth Nixson Junior High the last year of its existence, before becoming the first basketball coach at Travis Junior High. He taught three years at Horace Mann, and one student honored him by giving him credit for helping him to become the inventor of one type job engine that is listed at NASA. He was drafted in the Air Force in 1945 where he received the chance of a lifetime to play baseball. He was a left-handed first baseman for a team in Spokane, Wash. He jokingly laughed and said, "I fought World War II with a baseball bat." His work only took a back seat to his love for God. He became an elder at East Amarillo Church of Christ in the late 1960s. He only missed one or two Sundays in all those years. Wednesday afternoon he went to the Media Press Day luncheon, came home and said, "I saw all the boys today." Maybe that was God's way of letting him say "goodbye." He married Mary Lou Hawkins on July 18, 1946, in Dodd City. Survivors include his wife; a son, Tim Howard and wife, Sheri, of Amarillo; a daughter, Penny Sloan of Canyon; two sisters, Wyneth Fletcher of Garland and Shirley Owen of Dallas; three grandsons, Anthony Howard, Terrance Howard and Tanner Howard, all of Amarillo; and two granddaughters, Kayleigh Howard of Amarillo and Savanna Sloan of Canyon. Local arrangements were by Cox Funeral Home. Other arrangements are by Cook-Walden Chapel of The Hills Funeral Home in Austin. Mrs. Rochelle was born Jan. 17, 1918, in Wildorado. She was raised in Amarillo and was married to Winton Rochelle. They lived in Odessa for 21 years, then in Houston for another 24 years. She passed away peacefully after living for one year at her son's home in Austin. Frances was recognized for 55 years of volunteer service to the Girl Scouts in Odessa and Houston. She was awarded the Thanks Badge and Thanks II for many roles as a Girl Scout including Troop Leader, Day Camp Director, Backpacking Coordinator, Outdoor Training, and History Committee. For many years she was the church librarian at First Baptist Church of Odessa and Hidden Valley Baptist Church of Houston. She was most recently an active member of and church librarian at Memorial Baptist Church of Houston. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Lula Fay Stringfellow Giles; and by her husband, Winton Rochelle. Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Bolton of Dimmitt; a son, Gary Rochelle of Austin; and three sisters, Elizabeth Gahn, Martha B. Stulce, and Lutie Hume "Cindy" Kennedy, all of Amarillo. Amarillo Globe-News, Aug. 31, 2003 Louise Williams Wolfe SUGAR LAND - Louise Williams Wolfe, 86, formerly of Amarillo, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003. Services will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are by The Settegast-Kopf Co. Funeral Directors at Sugar Creek. Mrs. Wolfe was born Aug. 22, 1917, in Little Rock, Ark., to William Hood and Ann Grainger Williams. She was a graduate of Little Rock Central High School and was known as "The Nightingale" for her beautiful singing voice. She was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Amarillo and was a former president of Home Arts and Newcomers Club. She loved playing bridge and was an avid enthusiast of the arts with a special interest in stained glass and painting. She will always be remembered by her family as a positive mother who kept her family together in their many moves and adventures and always lived life to the fullest. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Everette Wolfe Jr. Survivors include a daughter, Karen Ann Crandall of Kennebunk, Maine; a son, Edward Everette Wolfe III of Harrisburg, Pa.; two sisters, Nena Williams Hulsander of Arlington and Jo Williams of Little Rock; a brother, Grainger Williams of Little Rock; grandchildren, Tiffany Ann Senn of Sugar Land, Harrison Dylan Wolfe of Harrisburg and Jill Ashley Snyder of Los Angeles; and two great-grandchildren.
