Morton DUMAS - Donald C. Morton, 76, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2003. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in First Presbyterian Church of Dumas with the Rev. Ben Seller, pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors. Mr. Morton was born in Jackson, Miss. He received a bachelor of science degree in industrial management from Georgia Tech. He had been a Dumas resident since December 1950. He was an active member and elder of First Presbyterian Church. He was employed with Potash Co. of America from 1950 to 1991. He had been a longtime member and president of Dumas Lions Club, and was presented the Melvin Jones Fellow Award in 2002. In 1972, he was Citizen of the Year. Mr. Morton served on the Dumas Independent School District Board for 14 years. He also served as the DISD board president. Mr. Morton had been an active member of the community and served on numerous boards. Survivors include his wife, Lenora; two sons, Doug and wife, Lynne, of Lake Tahoe, Nev., and Greg and wife, Letty, of San Antonio; and two grandsons, Greg and Chris. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 7, 2003 Elsewhere Doug Holcomb AUSTIN - Doug Holcomb, 81, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003. Services were at 10 a.m. Saturday in Harrell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Bond officiating. Burial was in Live Oak Cemetery in Austin. Mr. Holcomb was born in Palestine on Aug. 28, 1922, to Martin and Grace Holcomb. He graduated from Lakeview High School in Lakeview, where he earned honors playing basketball and baseball. He married his wife of 62 years, Sue Rice in 1941 and moved to Amarillo. Doug served in the Navy in the South Pacific during WWII. After the war, Doug returned to Amarillo and bred Shetland ponies and showed his award-winning palomino quarter horse, Cracker Jack Lighter, in the states of Texas, Colorado and New Mexico. Doug opened Holcomb Motors on East 10th Avenue in Amarillo in 1953. Doug was a deacon at Trinity Baptist Church and served on numerous committees. He enjoyed a lifelong passion for the Dallas Cowboys, bird dogs, hunting and fishing. He had been a resident of Austin for two years. Mr. Herrmann was born April 4, 1927, in New Haven, Conn., to Martin and Marion "Reising" Herrmann Sr. He graudated from St. Francis High School in New Haven. He lived in Guilford, Conn., and was employed for 43 years by Southern Connecticut Gas Co., before moving to Canyon in 1993. He married Bonnie Wieck in Canyon in 1998. He was a veteran of the Navy, serving during World War II. He was a member of Supervisory Development Program for Utilities from 1971 to 1973, and served as president of International Management Council of New Haven from 1976 to 1977. He was awarded the certificate of achievement for energy theft, the certificate of award in management in 1971, New Haven International Management Council Award in Techniques of Speaking, and in 1999, he was given the Certificate of Appreciation from Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Kathleen Doherty Herrmann in 1997, and a brother, Robert Herrmann in 1984. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery with military rites by DAV Chapter 26. Mr. Holt was born in Arnett, Okla., and had lived in Amarillo most of his life. He was a line foreman in helium production at the Amarillo Helium Plant until his retirement Dec. 21, 1979. Mr. Holt served with the Army during World War II. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was a recipient of the Bronze Star. He loved fishing and traveling. With a travel trailer he visited all of the states of the continental United States. He was preceded in death by his wife, Tonita Holt on June 10, 2003. She graduated from Briscoe High School in 1955. She attended Amarillo College from 1955 to 1957. Pat worked at Frank Phillips College for six years prior to coming back to Amarillo College, where she worked for 14 years in the accounting department before retiring in January 1998. She was a member of Oakdale Grace Fellowship Church. Pat married John Brogdon on Feb. 10, 1996, in Amarillo. Although they only had eight years together, they lived them to the fullest. Pat and John traveled the last few years through numerous states and made lasting friendships wherever they went. Their common interests made their marriage a match in heaven. Wherever you saw one of them, you would see the other. Although separated now for a short time, true love knows no bounds. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Willene Waters. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 7, 2003 Amarillo Joseph J. Horsley Joseph J. Horsley, 83, of Amarillo died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Howard Batson officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount. Mr. Horsley was born in Cincinnati, March 25, 1920, the son of Walter Horsley and Theresa Ewers Horsley. After attending Purcell Catholic High School and St. Xavier's Commercial School in Cincinnati, he graduated from East High Night School in 1941. That year he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, serving five years during World War II at several U.S. bases and in Cairo, Egypt. He was commissioned a second lieutenant, and by war's end, had achieved the rank of captain. On Jan. 28, 1945, he married Elizabeth Jane Taylor of Sikeston, Mo. After war service Mr. Horsley attended college at the Missouri School of Mines in Rolla, Mo., where he earned a bachelor's in civil engineering. Later, in 1966, he earned a master of science degree in aeronautical engineering at Wichita State University. In 1953 Mr. Horsley accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior, a commitment to which he was faithful for the rest of his life. He worked for the Missouri Highway Dept., the U.S. Corps of Engineers, Francis Engineering Co. in Saginaw, Mich., McDonnell Aircraft Corp. in St. Louis, Mo., and the Boeing Co. in Wichita, Kan. Upon retirement in 1982, Mr. Horsley and his wife became volunteers with the Mission Service Corps of the Southern Baptist Convention, with which they helped build, renovate and maintain churches throughout the United States, in Bermuda and Israel. In 1996 the couple moved to Amarillo. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Lou Horsley of Houston; three sons, David Taylor Horsley of Amarillo, and Warren Scott Horsley and Paul Joseph Horsley, both of Kansas City, Mo.; daughters-in-law, Michele Fortunato of Amarillo and Julie Shepler Horsley of Kansas City; four grandchildren, Nathan Paul Horsley and Sierra Marie Horsley, both of Kansas City, and Matthew Fortunato Horsley and Rachel Leah Horsley, both of Amarillo; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Arrangements are by Rector Funeral Home 2800 S. Osage St.. Mrs. Raines was born in Norfolk County, Ark., to the Rev. B.M. and Maggie Bell Hall. They moved to Pauls Valley, Okla., where she met and married James D. Raines. She worked as a retail clothing sales clerk for many years. After her retirement she sat with the elderly. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Jimmie Lee Long; a son, James M. Raines; and a grandson, Mark Collins. Ballew, 79, of Amarillo died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003. A celebration service will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in First Baptist Church with Dr. Howard K. Batson officiating. A second celebration will be in his hometown of Ennis at 2 p.m. Saturday in Keever Funeral Home. Burial will be in Myrtle Cemetery in Ennis. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Heaven was made abundantly sweeter on Sept. 4, when J.D. went home to be with his Lord after enduring a stroke. J.D. was born Oct. 24, 1923, in Ennis. He graduated from Ennis High School in 1940 and entered Texas Tech, where he joined ROTC and served as a saddle tramp. J.D. Received his commission as a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps from Yale University on July 12, 1943. He married Carolyn Fountain in Louisville, Ky., on May 6, 1944. During World War II, he risked his life flying supplies as an engineering officer over the Hump from Burma to China. After the war, he returned to Texas Tech and graduated with a BS in mechanical engineering in 1948. Upon graduation, J.D. became an engineer with Southwestern Public Service in the Denver City power plant. In 1951, he was transferred to Amarillo with Southwestern Public Service as an assistant plant manager. Over his career, he was promoted to power plant manager for East Plant and then Nichols Station. Prior to his retirement from Southwestern Public Service in 1985, he held the position manager of performance engineering. In 1980 the American Society of Mechanical Engineers bestowed the highest honor the society awards, Centennial Medallions, to J.D. and Cleon Ligon of Amarillo. In 1985, he served as president of the River Road School Board. J.D. had many passions. He served the Lord with zeal as a member of First Baptist Church in Amarillo, where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and a Gideon. He spent much of his free time on mission trips throughout the United States. He was also a member of Texas Society of Professional Engineers. He loved being with his family and was a devoted husband and loving father. He jogged regularly at the Family Life Center and was an avid fly fisherman, enjoying many trips to Lake City, Colo., with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sye and Minnie Mae Ballew of Ennis, and a son, Teddy Durwood Ballew. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Gloria Cowan and husband, Lee, of Cedar Hill; two sons, David Ballew and wife, Ann, of Abilene and Dan Ballew and wife, Linda, of Amarillo; a brother, Kenneth Ballew and wife, Francie, of Lantana, Fla.; six grandchildren, J.D. She was a car hop at Elmo's Drive Inn for more than 30 years. She worked for Northwest Texas Hospital from 1984 until her retirement in 1987. She married Clifford "Elmo" Hicks in 1980. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2000; and two brothers, Cleburn Passmore in 1965 and Tommy L. Passmore in 2000. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 7, 2003 Theressa Bucy Thompson Theressa Bucy Thompson, 105, of Conway, Ark., formerly of Amarillo died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003. Celebration of life services will be at 2 p.m. today in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Theressa Bucy Thompson went home to be with her family and Savior on Sept. 3. Mrs. Thompson was born in Henry County, Tenn., on Aug. 30, 1898. She had just celebrated her 105th birthday with family and friends in Conway. Theressa and her family moved to Odell in 1901. She attended a one-room schoolhouse through the eighth grade and finished at Clarendon Junior College. She graduated from the University of Texas in 1921, and taught typing at Amarillo High School for three and a half years until she married O.D. Thompson. Mr. Thompson, a graduate of University of Texas School of Law, later became a district attorney in Amarillo, and later moved to private practice. Mrs. Thompson was an active member of Polk Street Methodist Church. She was an avid gardener and member of Amarillo Garden Club, who loved sharing her produce and beautiful flowers with others. Mrs. Thompson, with her excellent culinary skills was also responsible for teaching three future generations to be good cooks. Theressa Thompson was a devoted servant and caregiver, who cared for her elderly mother, aunt, mother-in-law, and sister, Hilda, until they died, while still tending to her own young family. She lived in Amarillo until 1996, when after the deaths of her son, O.D. Thompson Jr. in 1993 and daughter, Tresa June in 1996, she moved to Conway, Ark., and was cared for by her eldest grandson, Dr. Tod Ghormley, his family and the loving staff of Heritage Center Nursing Home. She was preceded in death by her husband; her son; her daughter; her father, George Washington Bucy; her mother, Ida Bell Byrn Bucy; a sister, Hilda; and a brother, Seewald. Survivors include six grandchildren, Sue Thompson Walker and husband, Terry, of Odessa, Jana Ghormley Boss of Allen, Dr. Tod Ghormley and wife, Mimi, of Conway, Christopher Paul Thompson and wife, Tamarah, of West Des Moines, Iowa., Chris Ghormley and wife, Terry, of Santa Maria, Calif., and Jason Grant Ghormley and wife, Mary Ann, of Plano; 11 great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Laveta Thompson of Bartlesville, Okla. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 7, 2003 Martha Nell Hewitt Martha Nell Hewitt, 75, of Amarillo died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in N.S. Griggs and Sons Pioneer Chapel, 2615 Paramount Blvd. with the Rev. Perry Hunsaker of St. Paul United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mrs. Hewitt was a graduate of Cohn High School in 1946. She married Marshall Hinson Hewitt on June 22, 1948, in Nashville, Tenn. She was a member of Eastern Star in West Nashville since 1951. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and the Rebecca Sunday School Class, and Les Chapeaux of Amarillo from its inception in August 2001. Survivors include a daughter, Ann Melear and husband, Bill, of Amarillo; two grandsons, Aaron Melear of Jacksonville, Fla., and Ben Melear of Amarillo; and a great-granddaughter, Meghan Melear of Jacksonville.
