Mrs. Murray was born Oct. 2, 1924, in Southard, Okla., the daughter of Lloyd and Valira Emmons. She married Leon Murray on Feb. 19, 1943, in Waynoka, Okla. Mrs. Murray was a homemaker and a member of the Hereford Church of the Nazarene. She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister. Mr. Luera was born July 25, 1929, in Colorado City. He grew up in Knickerbocker and attended schools there. He married Josefa Castillo on Oct. 24, 1948, in Plainview. They moved to Tulia in 1952. He was a self-employed carpenter. He retired in 1998. He was a member of Church of the Holy Spirit. Ford of Hollis. Amarillo Globe-News, Oct. 1, 2003 Thelma M. Hughes BORGER - Thelma M. Hughes, 90, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. today in Westlawn Cemetery with Gary Bodine, minister of Johnson Park Church of Christ, officiating. Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Directors. Mrs. Hughes was born March 2, 1913, and was a native of Stephenville. She was one of 14 children born to Sidney T. and Florence Houchin Walker. She attended country schools in Erath County and Jackson County, Okla. On Aug. 29, 1928, she married James Richard Hughes in Eldorado, Okla. Mr. and Mrs. Hughes lived in Olustee, Okla., Sudan, Lakeview, Amarillo and Panhandle prior to moving to the Borger area in 1943. They settled in Bunavista where they established a loving home and reared four children. While still a teenager, she became a Christian and was baptized in a tank near the Willowvale Church of Christ in Jackson County, Okla. She and her husband were members of Second and Deahl Streets Church of Christ in Borger for several years and later were charter members of Bunavista Church of Christ and Johnson Park Church of Christ in Borger. While a member of Bunavista Church of Christ, she taught women's Bible class for many years. She was a member of Johnson Park Church of Christ and the Arredondo Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution. She was preceded in death by her husband on March 23, 1987; a son, Forrest Dean Hughes on July 9, 1995; her parents; five brothers; and seven sisters. Mr. Howard was born in Greenfield, Mo., on April 28, 1918. He moved to Clovis when he was 6 months old. He went to work for Santa Fe Railway in 1936. He served from Oct. 18, 1941, until Oct. 5, 1945, with the Headquarters Squadron 45th Air Depot Group of the Army. He returned to work with the Santa Fe Railway and retired after 43 years of service. He married Ruth McDonald of Portales, N.M., on June 1, 1946. He was an avid golfer and bowler and he and his wife traveled with the Good Sam Club of Clovis for many years. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Johnny and wife, Katie, of Waco and Robert "Bobby" and wife, Debby, of Amarillo; a grandson, Jonathan Howard of Carrollton; three granddaughters, Tisha Nicewarner of Waco, and Sarah Smoot and husband, Will, and Emily Howard and husband, Jon Revett, all of Amarillo; and his great-grandchildren, Calvin, Madeline and Jackson Smoot, and Isaac and Solomon Revett, all of Amarillo, and Angel, James and Imani, all of Waco. Mrs. Akst was born in Oklahoma and moved to Pampa in 1929. She was a 1937 graduate of Pampa High School and a graduate of Draughon's Business College in Edmond, Okla. She and her former husband, Irving B. Akst, owned Merry Melodies, a downtown Pampa music store, in the early 1950s. Mrs. Akst was the registrar for Pampa Junior High School and "was in charge" of Cabot Credit Union. She was also a bookkeeper for many years for Lewis Jones Construction, and Idos Corp., a scientific services and consulting company they founded in the late 1970s. She was an active member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Pampa, and later a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Amarillo. She was an active volunteer serving as president of St. Vincent's altar society, a driver for Meals on Wheels and many other organizations. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Marguerite Jones of Pampa, and two brothers, Lewis Jones Jr. of Pampa and Jack L. Jones of Springer, N.M. Survivors include four daughters, Carol Mathews of Lee's Summit, Mo., Cherie Clifton and Teresa Railsback, both of Amarillo, and Janet Martin of Cedar Park; two sons, Adam Akst of Cedar Park and Jason Akst of Sycamore, Ill.; a sister, Ursula Kennedy of Austin; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, Oct. 1, 2003 Cyrus McDonald Baxter Cyrus McDonald Baxter, 51, of Amarillo died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Oakwood Cemetery in Comanche. Local arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Mr. Baxter had been a resident of Donley County since 1998. He was born April 18, 1952, the son of C.B. and Julia Jo McDonald Baxter, and spent his childhood in Comanche. Joining a family of three sisters, each in a different Comanche school at the time, Cy quickly became known and loved by friends of all ages. Upon high school graduation, Cy attended Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos and graduated from Tarleton State College in Stephenville, with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture/forestry/parks and wildlife. He joined the Texas Animal Health Commission and was stationed in South Texas. Later, he worked for Brown and Root Construction Inc. of Houston, where he met and married Lisa Sharp. They had one son, Cody Baxter, who currently makes his home in Comanche. After returning to Comanche, Cy was engaged in ranching, farming and real estate. In 1998, Cy joined his brother-in-law and sister, Jack and Rebecca King, in ranching, managing the Cottonwood Ranch. The ranch is located at the conflux of the Salt Fork branch of the Red River and Lake Creek, 17 miles northeast of Clarendon. He counted many Clarendon, Donley County and Amarillo people his friends and considered the ranch his home. Survivors include a son, Cody Baxter of Comanche; three sisters, Pat Patton of Comanche, Dina Neal of Vernon and Rebecca King of Amarillo; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Cox Funeral Home Benton Chapel, 4180 Canyon Drive, with Dr. Murray Gossett of First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mr. Haskins was born in Lelia Lake and was raised in Morton. He was a graduate of Morton High School. He was a cook in the Army. Mr. Haskins was a resident of Levelland from 1951 until 1987, where he owned and operated Haskins Supermarket. He was a grocer and butcher all of his life. He married Mary Reed in 1981 in Levelland. After living on Lake LBJ since 1987, he returned to Amarillo in 2002. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1999. Survivors include a daughter, Carol Thompson of Amarillo; two stepdaughters, Cathy Newman of Grand Prairie and Cheryl Aldridge of Irving; and a brother, George Haskins of Albuquerque, N.M.
