Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Fairview Cemetery with the Rev. James Ikner, pastor of Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery by Adams Funeral Home. Miss Byers was born Aug. 23, 1915, in Paris, Texas, to Leslie W. Byers and Zora Taylor Byers. She was a member of Church of the Nazarene, where she had taught Sunday school. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Dorothy Byers of Wellington; a niece; a great-niece; and a great-nephew. The family suggests memorials be to the Nazarene Church. Amarillo Globe-News, Oct. 2, 2003 Gertrude Vivian Reeves MATADOR - Gertrude Vivian Reeves, 95, of Abilene died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in East Mound Cemetery. Arrangements are by Seigler Funeral Home. Ms. Reeves was born Dec. 5, 1907, in Fisher County. She had been a resident of Abilene for the past five years. Survivors include three sisters, Ruby Coke of Abilene, Opal Horsley of Snyder and Lois Stancell of Muleshoe. Mrs. Strain was born Oct. 5, 1929, in Amarillo. She married Theo Strain Jr. on Jan. 23, 1947, in Plainview. Survivors include two sisters, Geraldine Walker of Pensacola, Fla., and Kathryn Bilby of Siloam Springs, Ark. The family suggests memorials be to Vistacare Family Hospice. Amarillo Globe-News, Oct. 2, 2003 Freeman Barkley SPEARMAN - Freeman Barkley, 89, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ken Cole officiating. Burial will be in Hansford Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home. Mr. Barkley was born Albert Freeman Barkley Jr. to Gertrude and A.F. Barkley on Feb. 28, 1914, in Old Hansford. He married Ruby Mae Moss in 1937. She preceded him in death in 1970. He married Elva Lee Sheets in 1975. She preceded him in death in 1982. He was an active person in the community. He was a vice president of First State Bank, a master mason of Masonic Lodge 1040 AF&AM, a member of First United Methodist Church and the Boy Scout program. He served as a city commissioner of Spearman for 14 years. He served his church faithfully throughout his life. He enjoyed ranching, woodworking and family and friends. He was Papaw to five grandchildren whom he called on a regular basis, and who revere him greatly. His great joy was his great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Virginia Renfro. Survivors include a son, Bill Barlkey and wife, Tommie, of Amarillo; a daughter, Mary Ellen Kirkland and husband, Malcolm, of Sulphur Springs; two sisters, Gertrude Archer of Amarillo and Reba Huffhines of Oklahoma City; his grandchildren, Heather Barkley of Sunnyvale, Calif., Brian and Clint Barkley, both of Amarillo, Jana and Danny Prochaska of Sulphur Springs and Paul and Jaime Kirkland, both of Tyler; and a great-grandson, Kaden Kirkland. Amarillo Globe-News, Oct. 2, 2003 Amarillo Robert "Bob" Dennis Robert "Bob" Dennis, 80, of Amarillo, formerly of Roswell, N.M., died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in LaGrone Chapel in Roswell with the Rev. Archie Echols of First United Methodist Church and Francie Pittman of First United Methodist Church in Canyon officiating. Burial will be in South Park Cemetery in Roswell. Local arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Dennis was born in McKinney on April 25, 1923, to B.F. and Rilla Dennis. He attended Pasadena College in California and obtained his B.A. degree from Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa, Idaho. He received AF pilot wings and flew P51 fighter planes while in the service. He obtained his master's degree from West Texas State University in Canyon. From 1959 to 1963, he coached a variety of sports at New Mexico Military Institute. He returned there in 1967 for a total of 12 years coaching and teaching. He coached in the Canadian Football League. He married Florine Agnew on Aug. 22, 1966, in Niagara Falls, N.Y. He was preceded in death by his parents; a stepson, 1st Lt. James B. Agnew; his former wife, Doris Dennis; and three sisters, Dean Vinson, Bonnie Everts and Judy Quinn. Survivors include his wife; a brother, Glenn Dennis of Roswell; two sons, Terry Dennis and Jerry Dennis, both of Roswell; seven grandchildren; a great-grandchild. "Red" Carter, 60, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003. Services will be at 11 a.m. today in New Birth Bible Fellowship with the Rev. E.J. Cofer officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Warford-Walker Mortuary, 509 N. Hughes St. Mr. Carter was born in Amarillo on Jan. 18, 1943. He was employed with Quality Nissan of Amarillo as detail manager. Survivors include a daughter, Precious Carter-Harris and husband, Maurice, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; five sisters; a brother, John Henry of Hobbs, N.M.; a special aunt, Mattie Birdine; a special friend, Jeanette Mcghee Dunlap; his stepchildren, Jan, Dan, Van and Shawn Terry; and four grandchildren. Rusty Sieck, associate pastor of St. Stephen United Methodist Church, and Lou Hansen, eulogist, officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Mrs. Elmore was born April 22, 1936, in Seagraves to Leon and Addie Kim. She graduated from Clovis High School in 1954. She lived in Olney for several years and moved to Amarillo in 1966. She and Jim Elmore had previously owned the Dr Pepper Bottling Co. in Amarillo. That was sold in 1976. She was always involved in artistic affairs. She took art lessons from Lou Hansen and had met many longtime friends. For many years, she was very involved in stained glass. She taught stained-glass classes for Amarillo College. She owned a retail stained-glass store. She had several stained windows in this area and in many states from California, Arizona, Kansas and Oklahoma. She was especially well-known for the Harrington Mausoleum stained-glass window. She had belonged to St. Stephen United Methodist Church since 1966. She was preceded in death by a son, Clay Thomas Elmore. Survivors include a daughter, Penny Lee Elmore of Amarillo; a son, Douglas Leon Elmore of Memphis, Tenn.; two sisters, Bettye Isham of The Woodlands and Ronnie Lynne Price of Amarillo; a grandson, Clay Thomas Elmore II of Memphis; two nephews; two nieces; two great-nephews; and a great-niece. Amarillo Globe-News, Oct. 2, 2003 Chris Coppedge Chris Coppedge, 18, of Amarillo died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Paramount Terrace Christian Church with the Rev. Scott Greer, pastor, officiating. Private burial will be by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Chris was born Feb. 23, 1985, in Tulsa, Okla., moving to Amarillo in 1989 when his father graduated from law school. He made friends quickly and easily, jumping right into soccer with the Flyers. He made everyone laugh even when he broke his leg in a game. His jokester personality was sort of his trademark. Chris was strong-willed. He was an Eagle Scout, but often hid the fact, worrying it wasn't cool to be a Scout. He was a member of the Amarillo High orchestra and loved music of all kinds. He played the cello for nine years, later picking up the acoustic and electric guitars. He played in the Sonrise Orchestra at Paramount Terrace Christian Church. Chris loved his junker, Horizon, and jumped it over the greens at the defunct Southwest Golf Course. He was also always late on his movie rentals. He enjoyed hanging out with his friends and family, playing soccer, fishing, playing or listening to music, playing cards, telling jokes, playing pool or ping pong and working on cars. He graduated from Amarillo High School last year. Last summer, he started working with his father at his law firm, impressing everyone with his diligence, initiative and work ethic. He started at Amarillo College this fall, working toward pharmacy school. He also shared a weekend job with his mother, Libby, at Best Buy selling Epson printers, and benefited from her giving him credit for some sales. Years ago, Chris accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior, so we know Chris is in a better place now, waiting for the rest of us to join him. Chris loved his family and they dearly loved him. Survivors include his parents, Lewis and Libby Coppedge of Amarillo; two sisters, Jessica and Julie Coppedge, both of Amarillo; his grandparents, Dr. Thomas O. and Teau Coppedge; aunts and uncles, Anna Coppedge and John and Kathy Coppedge, all of Charlotte, N.C., Thomas Coppedge III of Mount Holly, N.C., Patsy and Rex Bradley of Coto DeCaza, Calif., and Phyllis and Wallace Baird of North Carolina; and numerous cousins. Mr. Chapman grew up in Elmer, Okla., and moved to Amarillo in 1960. He married Juanita on April 16, 1947, in Odell. He worked for Blackburns clothing store for 33 years in the shoe department. He was residing at the Prairie House Living Center in Plainview. He was preceded in death a brother, Troy Chapman in 2001, and his parents. Survivors include his wife; a son, Robert Earl "Bob" Chapman and wife, Laquita, of Plainview; a brother, Kenneth Chapman of Altus, Okla.; grandchildren, Brent and Vonda Chapman, Krystal and Bobby Ovalle and Andrew and Traci Goodrun, all of Amarillo; and great-grandchildren, Brennan, Cole and Brady Chapman and Kymbree and Camren Ovalle, all of Amarillo. The Rev. Stanfield was born Oct. 11, 1911, in Grady. He was married to Thelma Jane Chapman. Survivors include a son, David Stanfield of Edgewood; two daughters, Joyce Kemper of Hobbs and Sharron Bennett of Jonesboro, Ark.; a brother, Clyde Ray Stanfield of Albuquerque; a sister, Gladys Thomas of Grady; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
