Services in Lubbock were at 10 a.m. Monday in St. John's Methodist Church with DPS escorts and color guards. Local arrangments were by Rix Funeral Directors. Former Gov. Smith's long career in politics began in 1944 when he was elected to the House of Representatives. He won the Senate District 28 seat in 1956, served three terms there, three terms as lieutenant governor, and two terms as governor. He returned to Lubbock in 1973 and later became assistant to the president and later to the chancellor at Texas Tech University. He was appointed to the Coordinating Board of the Texas College and University System in 1981, acting as chairman until 1983. Since his return to Lubbock in 1973, he has received dozens of community and state honors, including the John F. Lott Good Scout Award, John Ben Shepperd Outstanding Texas Leader Award, George Mahon Honor Role of Public Service, lifetime member of the Lubbock Rotary Club, and a doctor of human letters degree from Texas Tech Health Sciences Center, site of the Preston and Ima Smith HSC Library. A 33rd degree Mason, he was honored with a rare Masonic 50-Year Membership Award. He was a Mason for a total of 56 years at the time of his death. He was to be awarded Texas Tech University's Horizonti Infinito Award in December. As governor, he established the medical school and the law school at Texas Tech University. His loyalty to West Texas created a base from which the area and the university began unprecedented growth. Even in his early terms in the legislature, he authored bills to create farm to market roads in this area, and improved education throughout the state. His priority for education stemmed from his personal experience, being raised on a sandy farm in Dawson County and working his way to a 1934 Texas Tech degree in business administration. Preston Smith was born March 8, 1912, in Cornhill, in Williamson County. He worked his way through high school in Lamesa, graduated Texas Tech, operated several theaters in Lubbock and in 1944 he began pursuit of a goal he had expressed as a child---- "to be governor of Texas some day." That dream drove him to be an intense campaigner in all his races. He visited every person possible in every place possible. He kept massive card files of more than 65,000 supporters over the years. He loved people and he loved to campaign. In his statewide races, he became famous for meeting with the leaders of the largest Texas corporations in the morning, then spending the afternoon going through every business on the street, to meet every person in the buildings. He didn't stop in the front rooms, he went into the kitchens and back shops to talk to every worker. He was interested in all people. In the governor's office, he answered the phone, sometimes having to convince the caller he had indeed reached the governor of Texas, all the while enjoying every minute of the conversation. His entire success was accompanied by a healthy, human humor that people enjoyed. It kept him from ever being discouraged or tired. He will be buried beside his wife, former first lady Ima Smith, who died in 1998. Survivors include two children, son, Preston Michael of Crawford, Colo., and daughter, Jan Lauren Taylor of Lubbock; grandchildren Kelly Michelle Jones of Leander, Dr. Robert Preston Schmid of Lubbock, and Preston Conrad Smith and Lauren Taylor, both of Dallas; four great-grandchildren, Katrina Elizabeth Jones and Benjamin Elijah Jones, both of Leander, and Sara Beth Schmid and Preston James Schmid, both of Lubbock.
