Morris, 54, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, in Dallas. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Sunray Church of Christ. Burial will be in Lane Memorial Cemetery in Sunray by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman. Mr. Morris was born June 20, 1949, in Dumas. He farmed and ranched southwest of Gruver his entire life. He worked diligently to help the American farmer by being an active charter member of The American Agriculture Movement, serving as national secretary until his death. He married Vera Reaves on April 8, 1966, in Dalhart. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, J.R. Morris, MaryBelle Wisinger, Ada Blevins and R.L. Montgomery. Survivors include his wife; three children, Melanie and Jack Rodman of Crane, Chris and Lynelle Morris and Joseph "Andy" Morris, all of Sunray; two granddaughters; his parents, Vance and Ruth Morris of the farm; two brothers, Len and Rhonda Morris of Dayton and Joe and Nancy Morris of the farm; two sisters, Sherry Morris of Sunray and Renee and Billy Boyd of Amarillo; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family will be at 8075 County Road Y, 20 miles southwest of Gruver. Prayer services will be at 6 p.m. today in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel. Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Burial will be in Dumas Cemetery. Mr. Pena was born in Juarez, Mexico. He had worked as a restaurant cook. He attended Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church and was a member of Low Cursillistas of the Amarillo Diocese. He was also a member of "La Raza Imparable" and his own football team "The Rocbrawlers." Survivors include his wife, Diane; two sons, Alex Pena and Sergio Pena Jr., both of Dumas; three daughters, Xylia Pena and Dayizie Pena, both of Dumas, and Malaysia Pena of El Paso; his mother, Irene Pena of Dumas; his father, Rodolfo Pena of El Paso; three brothers, Luis Pena and wife, Maria, of El Paso, Victor Pena of San Diego and Rudy Pena and wife, Shannon, of Dumas; his grandmother, Eva Boya of El Paso; several nieces and nephews; and lots of friends. Amarillo Globe-News, Oct. 26, 2003 Elsewhere Ruby Lee Sandifer ABILENE - Ruby Lee Sandifer, 90, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003. Private graveside services were Sunday, Oct. 5, in Wheeler by Girdner-Brown Funeral Home. Mrs. Sandifer was born Aug. 5, 1913, in Wheeler County. She married Weldon Sandifer in 1937. She was a third-grade school teacher for many years. The majority of her teaching was spent in Clarendon for 11 years and she taught 16 years in Kermit where she finally retired in 1973. She was a devoted wife and a loving mother. She was a member of the Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1975; and an infant daughter in 1940. Survivors include a daughter, Suzanne Sandifer of Abilene; a brother, Glenn Williams of Wheeler; three nieces; and two nephews. Amarillo Globe-News, Oct. 26, 2003 Carol Jean Purl McMeans BELLAIRE - Carol Jean Purl McMeans, 61, died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003. Memorial services were Monday Oct. 13, 2003, in First Baptist Church of Bellaire. Mrs. McMeans was born Jan. 7, 1942, into a military family living in Oklahoma City. The family moved regularly with stops in North Carolina, San Antonio and Tokyo, Japan. Returning to the United States, they spent time in Cristoval, San Angelo and in Valdosta, Ga., before settling down in Amarillo. She married Clyde Edward McMeans Jr. on June 6, 1963, in Amarillo at Polk Street United Methodist Church, and in 1964 they moved to Houston before settling down in Bellaire. They lived in Bellaire for 33 years, raising two daughters, Lauri Ann McMeans Collins and Pamela Lynn McMeans Laws. Lauri has a daughter, Jessica Suzanne, and Pamela has a daughter, Shelby Kate, and a son, Benjamin Marcus. Carol attended Amarillo College, graduated from Texas Tech University in 1963 and earned her master's from Houston Graduate School of Theology. She loved the Lord and served Him all her life. Survivors include two daughters, Lauri Ann McMeans Collins and Pamela Lynn McMeans Laws; a sister, Mary Anne Purl Smith of Mendoza; two brothers, Samuel Clay Purl of Amarillo and David Evan Purl of Sunray; two granddaughters, Jessica Suzanne and Shelby Kate; and a grandson, Benjamin Marcus. Mrs. Straub was born June 1, 1914, in Des Moines, N.M. She married Noblin Straub on May 5, 1935, in Las Vegas, N.M. Mrs. Sherrill was born April 7, 1915, in Hope, N.M. She was a lifelong Church of Christ member. Mr. Turner served as the assistant professor of Anthropology and Director of the Laboratory for Human Osteology at the University of Alabama from 1974 to 1993. Since that time he had been director of No Man's Land Historical Museum in Goodwell. He graduated from Arnett High School. His passion in life was his farm, which he talked about at length with his family and friends. He was a very honest and dependable person. He was preceded in death by a very special grandmother, Elsa Baker; his parents; a sister, Elsa Ann Langley; and a brother, Carl Heinsohn. Yates, 94, of Amarillo died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Schooler Funeral Home Brentwood Chapel, 4100 S. Georgia St., with the Rev. Ron Whittof Coulter Road Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Hale Center Cemetery of Hale Center. Mrs. Yates was called home to her God, the Heavenly Father. She was born in the county of Stephenville. She was the first woman in the state of Texas to own a fourth-class post office. She received a contract with the U.S. Government in 1933. Ernie and Eunice Yates built the post office in Cotton Center and moved there in 1934. They had carried the mail on a rural mail route for four years. She worked for Port Hueneme Seabee Navy Base in 1945, the military base in Tokyo, Japan, in 1960, and Fort Sill Army Base in Lawton, Okla., in 1962. She retired in 1970. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernie Malcolm Yates; and her parents, Samuel Edward and Minnie Ola Gordon Wallace. She graduated from Sherman County High School in Goodland, Kan. She was baptized into the Lutheran Church in St. Francis when 3 months old and confirmed at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Goodland at age 13. She accepted Jesus as her savior when 5 years old, but as she used to say upon occasion, "Seems I've known Him since I was born, just didn't know how to express it." Iona had a very strong faith and loved to tell people about Jesus and what He could do for them and what He had done for her. Her favorite Bible verse was "But grow in grace and in the knowledge of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and forever, Amen." 2 Peter 3:18. Her favorite hymn was "Thy Strong Word." Iona moved to Amarillo from Denver in 1970 and worked in the insurance industry for 40 years. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Amarillo. She had four brothers and four sisters. He was always grateful and fulfilled in helping and caring for others. Phil's gift of humor blessed everyone he knew. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive. Mrs. Haynes was born and raised in Stratford. She was a graduate of Canyon High School as well as a 1943 graduate of West Texas State University. She had been a resident of Amarillo for more than 40 years. She worked as a legal secretary for Santa Fe Railway for many years before retiring in 1980. She was very active in International Toastmistress Club as well as a longtime member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, Rob Haynes of McKinney; a sister, Fern Bellah of Canyon; four grandchildren, Lindsey Brewer, Logan Haynes, Toby Haynes and Sam Haynes; three great-grandchildren; and four nephews and three nieces, Mark Zimmer, Stephen Zimmer, Susan Cox, Andrea Woolley, Bill Zimmer, Bob Zimmer and Sheryl Bellah White.
