Alcala Sr. Sammy R. Alcala Sr., 81, of Amarillo died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003. Rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. today in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Monsignor Rex Nicholl, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery with military rites by Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 26. Mr. Alcala was born in Adrian and had been a lifetime resident of Amarillo. He worked for 42 years for Fyfe Cement Co. before his retirement. Mr. Alcala served with the Army during World War II. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He was always willing to help others and always smiling. He loved playing the guitar and visiting his family. He married Luz Morales on May 22, 1941, in Amarillo. He was preceded in death by a son, Leroy Alcala in 1979 and a sister, Maria Fuentes in 2003. Survivors include his wife; five daughters, Vicky Valverde, Molly Valverde, Vera Herrera and Marcella Herrera, all of Amarillo, and Debbie Galvan of Phoenix; three sons, Sammy Alcala Jr. of Amarillo, Jimmy Alcala of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Eddie Alcala of Dodge City, Kan.; a brother, Willie Alcala of Amarillo; three sisters, Grace Diaz of Tucumcari, N.M., Juanita Guillen of Amarillo and Julia Thompson of Lebeck, Calif.; 33 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Davis was born March 21, 1918, in Blum. She was the daughter of Theodore and Osella Tipps. She had been a resident of Amarillo for 53 years. She met the love of her life in Amarillo in 1945, and they spent 42 years together. She was a devoted homemaker and mother and brought much joy to her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Herbert "Hub" Davis and a brother, Harold Tipps. Survivors include a son, Mark S. Davis and wife, Mary, of Amarillo; two sisters, Edna Marie Downey of Marysville, Calif., and Margaret Hudson of Bradenton, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Elaine Tipps of Longwood, Fla.; three cousins, Virginia Chism of Amarillo, Hazel Celey of San Diego and Earlene Marcy of Lubbock; seven nephews; five nieces; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He founded A and D Bookstore in 1958 and operated it for many years. He and his wife, Arleta. were married for 14 years.
