Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in First Presbyterian Church Chapel with Dr. Murray Gossett officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in Prairie Dell Cemetery in Hemphill County by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Miss Shaw was a longtime businesswoman and civic worker. She was the daughter of the late Matt and Carrie Shaw, pioneers of Roger Mills county, Okla. Her father filed on a homestead when the Cheyenne and Arapaho Country was opened in 1892, and it is there in Western Oklahoma where she was raised and spent most of her teen years. After completeing two years of high school in Oklahoma, she went to Canadian for her junior and senior years. Following her graduation, she attended Dague Business University at Wichita, Kan., and after completing her training, she returned to Canadian and was secretary to the late A.V. McQuiddy for 12 years. In 1942, she moved to Amarillo where she worked as a clerk and bookkeeper for the Amarillo Production Credit Association for the next nine years. She later worked as a bookkeeper for Kirk Manufacturing Co. Miss Shaw was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Fellowship Sunday School Class and the Narcissa Whitman Circle. She did volunteer work for the church library and was a lifetime member of St. Anthony's Hosptial Auxiliary, where she managed the gift shop. She was involved in the projects and programs of the Amarillo Business and Professional Women's Club since joining in 1948. She held many chairmanships and, in 1967, was named Woman of the Year by the club. She also received the Second Mile Award. She was manager of the gift shop at the Harrington Discovery Center. She was awarded a Mission Honor Award by the Women's Association. A special thank you to Travis and Michael Pittman and their parents, Karen and George Pittman. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one nephew. Survivors include two nieces, Ardise Shaw of Amarillo and Margaret Ann Wagnon of Arnot, Okla.; three nephews, Thoral Shaw Jr. of Durham, Okla., Albert Shaw of Crowell and Richard Shaw of Gowen, Mich. He was a farmer most of his life and drove a truck for 25 years. He loved his horses and gardening. He was a member of South Georgia Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and a member of San Jacinto United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir and was an active volunteer. Mrs. Craig also was a long-time member of the St. Anthony's Hospital auxiliary. She married Claude A. "Jack" Craig on April 14, 1927, in Amarillo. He preceded her in death on Jan. 30, 1990, after 63 years of marriage. Mr. Navarro was born in Amarillo and was a lifetime resident. He attended public schools in Amarillo, and was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. He had many special friends, including Dr. Rolf Habersang and Sue Rankin. Survivors include his mother, Gracie Navarro of Amarillo; his father, Juan C. Amarillo Globe-News, Nov. 19, 2003 Jay C. Travis Jay C. Travis, 74, of Amarillo died Monday, Nov. 17, 2003. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Darrouzett Cemetery in Darrouzett. Mr. Travis was born Jan. 3, 1929, in Shattuck, Okla., to Pete and Murl Travis. He attended grade school at Follett and Shattuck, and graduated from Darrouzett High School. He entered the Air Force in 1946 and served as a tech sergeant in the Korean War. After discharge from the service he was employed for a time at Bill Chase Ford and John Deere in Follett, then later at Bill Brown Motors at Shattuck. He served as a secretary at Shattuck Chamber of Commerce and also as city manager. Jay C. later moved to Perryton, where he owned and operated Perryton Flight Center for 10 years. In 1988, he moved to Amarillo where he worked in Amarillo State Center for the handicapped. Upon retirement he worked until the time of his death as an income tax consultant. The family also wants to especially express their gratitude to the entire staff of BSA Hospice for their loving care of Jay C. and his family, to Carl Kettler who was always there for us during the past several years and to his many other friends, thank you. Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. today in First Presbyterian Church in Amarillo. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Mrs. Johnson, the daughter of Ursula and Garold Knight, was born in Madison, Wis., on June 29, 1925. She moved to Texas with her family in 1926, as her father was a geologist with Phillips Petroleum. She graduated from Amarillo High School and was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority at the University of Texas. She married David S. Kritser Jr. and they began their life together on the Kritser Ranch, north of Amarillo. Later, she moved to Amarillo and became a member of Junior League of Amarillo and became its president in 1962. She was the first woman elected to the Amarillo Independent School District Board and was its president when the original Amarillo High School burned down in 1970. She was also very active with the Children's Home at 34th and Bowie. After David Kritser's death in 1968, Betty married J. Lee Johnson III in 1978 and moved to Fort Worth, where she had lived until the present. Survivors include her children, Ann Kritser Gunn and husband, Vince, of Wichita Falls, and David Kritser and wife, Sally, and John Kritser and wife, Nancy, all of Amarillo; her stepchildren, Sheila B. Johnson, J. Lee Johnson IV and wife, Renee, Kate L. Johnson and Mark L. Johnson and wife, Christina, all of Fort Worth, and Karen Johnson Hixon and husband, Tim, of San Antonio; a brother, David Knight and wife, Eleanor, of California; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and 12 stepgrandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, Nov. 19, 2003 Hoyte J. Palmer DALLAS - Hoyte J. Palmer, 74, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church. Burial will be at Sparkman Hillcrest by Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home. Mr. Palmer was a devoted deacon at First Baptist Church for more than 30 years. His Christian witness was reflected in every aspect of his life, work and relationships. He faithfully served in the Young Married Division and in the Presidents Sunday School Class. To know Hoyte was to love him and his memory will be cherished by all those whom he served and loved. He was born in Chattanoga, Okla., on Jan. 26, 1929, to Callie and Hoyte P. Palmer. After the death of his first wife, Hoyte often said, "God took one and gave me four," when he married his current wife of 33 years, Elaine Suave Palmer, and became stepfather to her three daughters. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Rotha, and his wife of 19 years, Mary Ann Todd Palmer. Arrangements are by Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors. Mr. Newton was born Dec. 30, 1912, in Cleveland, Ark. He was a laborer for Southwest Lumber Co. in Happy Jack, Ariz. Survivors include three sons, David G. Newton of Austin, Ralph Newton of Cottonwood, Ariz., and Kenneth Newton of Grove, Ark.; a daughter, Lomona White of Sanford; a brother, Billy Fred Newton of Lebanon, Mo.; three sisters, Donna Lewis of Amarillo, Sarah Banks of Canyon and Marvell Kirk of Camp Verde, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, Nov. 19, 2003 Judge H.M. LaFont PLAINVIEW - Judge H.M. LaFont, 96, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church with Dr. Max Browning officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Cemetery by Bartley Funeral Home. Mr. LaFont was born July 1, 1907, in Conran, Mo. He married Jane Powell on Nov. 11, 1937, in Plainview. He was a member of Kiwanis Club in Plainview and was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was an attorney for Central Plains Hospital and Plainview Cemetery Association. He held the office of Hale County Judge, and was district attorney for the 64th Judicial District from 1943 to 1949. He was a member of the State Legislature from 1949 to 1953 and was district judge for the 64th Judicial District from 1957 to 1964. He was a member of Committee on Penal Code and Code of Criminal Procedure from 1960 to 1961. While serving in the Legislature he authorized many bills for the preservation of underground water and the High Plains Experiment Station at Halfway. He also served on a special legislative council to study the tax structure, state and local highway construction, uniform commercial code and the Gilmer-Aiken Law. And while serving as district attorney he tried the famous Hunt murder case three times. The case stayed in the national press for several years. Finally, he served as chairman of the board for First National Bank of Plainview for many years, and was on the board of directors of State National Bank since its inception. He was preceded in death by his wife on Oct. 2, 1998; two sisters, Clara Nusebaum and Mary Stahler; and a brother, Fayette LaFont. Survivors include a son, Bill LaFont and wife, Ellie, of Plainview; a daughter, Jennie Gail and husband, Bill Huie, of Corpus Christi; seven grandchildren, Matthew LaFont of Plainview, Chris LaFont of Fort Worth, Nicole Smock of Princeton, Ill., Emily Maynard of Lubbock, William Huie and Claire Huie, both of Austin, and Chris Chapman of Dallas; and five great-grandchildren. She married Eddie Montgomery in Spur on July 12, 1941. Survivors include two sons, Sonny Penny of Odessa and Eddie Montgomery Jr. of Austin; two nieces, Carolyn Simon of Arlington and Debra Sledge of Houston; two nephews, Darrick Williams of Arlington and Eric Craig of Houston; and three grandchildren. Mrs. Barnes was born on Dec. 11, 1909, in Cimarron County. She married Raymond Edwin Barnes on Jan. 26, 1928, in Clayton, N.M. Survivors include a daughter, Karen Reynolds of Las Vegas; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to the Cimarron Nursing Home.
