Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street, with the Rev. Pat Carathers, pastor of Saint Hyacinth Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will be in Llano East Cemetery with military rites by D.A.V. Chapter 26. Mr. Burns was born Aug. 21, 1923, in Arkansas City, Kan., to Ida Noble Burns and Sherman Burns. Though he spent much of his early life in Pampa, he became a professional musician at the age of 14, dropped out of school and hit the road. He sat in the trumpet section of a variety of big bands for more than 20 years, including the Bobby Sherwood, Herbie Kay and Dick Morton orchestras. He later managed the Dick Morton orchestra for many years. In the 1950s he formed the Bobby Burns orchestra and orchestra agency for which he played or booked local and touring bands until 1998. In the 1950s, his 17-piece orchestra packed the Nat Ballroom nightly. Mr. Burns later graduated from Amarillo High School and attended the University of Texas at Austin. He served with the Army Air Corps during World War II and played in a band that toured to raise money for the war bond drive, working with a variety of big-name performers, including Frank Sinatra. He held memberships in the Masonic Lodge and Khiva Shrine Temple, and he played in the Khiva Shrine Band. He married Dorothy Craig on March 14, 1974. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Sandy Burns of Pampa; two stepdaughters, Valerie Artho of Hereford and Pam Smith of Amarillo; and six grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. at Childress Cemetery in Childress, by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mrs. Cagle was born Dec. 19, 1934, in Oneida, Tenn. She married Bob Cagle on Dec. 10, 1960. She had been a resident of Amarillo for 24 years. She was employed with D&S Pharmacy on 34th Avenue and Georgia Street for 17 years. She was the most giving, caring and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother ever. She always had a smile on her face. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church. After his death in 1986, she married Dewaide Bell on Sept. 6, 1991, in Wheeler. Betty was a world traveler with her husband, James, and lived in different parts of the world. She was also a member of Lone Oak Baptist Church in Sayre, Okla. She was preceded in death by her husbands, James W. Hughes in 1986 and Dewaide Bell in September; a sister, Willie Mae Updike; and a brother, Jack Veazey. Burial was in Llano Cemetery. Mr. Higgs was born in Ford County to the late William Edgar and Ruth Ford Higgs. He had a life membership in the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America with more than 50 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; a daughter, Gail Garrison; his parents; a brother Race Higgs; his sisters, Leona Whitehead and Virginia Cleghorn; and a special nephew, Ronnie Higgs. She was a graduate of Amarillo High School and was on the archery team. She lived in Amarillo for many years and worked as an executive assistant. She moved to Broken Arrow, Okla., in 2000. Mrs. Waters was preceded in death by her father, Pete Nunn, in 1978; and her brother, Rusty Nunn, on Dec. 23. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Mrs. Dupriest, a longtime resident of Amarillo, was born in Joplin, Mo., on March 1, 1909. She married Carl Dupriest in January of 1927 in Denver. They moved to Amarillo that same year. She retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company after 36 years of service. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Mrs. Dupriest was a Pink Lady volunteer at St. Anthony's, High Plains Baptist, and Northwest Texas hospitals for more than 15 years. She delivered Meals on Wheels for 11 years and commodities for Randall County for several years. She also volunteered for RSVP for a short time. She was a member of Lifeway Fellowship Baptist Church. Mrs. Dupriest was preceded in death by her husband in 1997. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Cora Ann Phipps was born 102 years ago Nov. 30, 1901, in Motley County to George W. Phipps and Sara Caroline Vickers Phipps, the eighth child of nine siblings. She lived in Matador for a while, then moved to an area that would later be Roaring Springs. She attended a country school called Dutchman. She was the only person to graduate from that school in June of 1919. In November 1922 she married Clyde Mitchell, and they had five children. While their three daughters were small, they moved several times because Clyde was a semi-professional baseball player. They finally settled in Kermit for several years before moving to Pampa in 1940, then to Amarillo in 1942. They moved to Colorado in the early 1950s, where she worked as a hostess at the Martha Lee Dining Room for about 10 years before moving back to Amarillo. Mrs. Mitchell was preceded in death by her husband in 1964 and two children, Clyda Corrine Nichols in 1997 and Donald Ray Mitchell in 1994. Survivors include two daughters, Johnie June Lowrance and husband, Cliff, of Amarillo, and LaVae Thacker and husband, Buzz, of Roaring Springs; a son, Dell Mitchell and wife, Mary, of Trinidad; 19 grandchildren; 31 great- grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Johnny Robinson, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Childress, officiating. Arrangements are by Foskey-Lilley-McGill Funeral Home. Curtis Carl Bruegel was born Aug. 23, 1934, to Fred and Juanita Bruegel at their Red Tower Ranch in Parmer County. He was baptized as a Methodist in 1946 in the Bethel Church. He started school at Lazbuddie, then transferred to the Dimmitt public schools when he was in sixth grade. He graduated from Dimmitt High School in 1951. He studied agriculture at Texas Tech. He married Gail Garrison on Jan. 23, 1955, in Childress. They settled in the Dimmitt area, where he operated farms and developed several agribusinesses. He was an owner or partner in grain elevators in Castro and Parmer counties and in cotton gins in Castro, Parmer and Childress counties. He also established the 6B Ranch in California, a thoroughbred and quarter-horse operation, and had an interest in a cattle ranch in Colorado. He was a past president of the Kiwanis Club of Dimmitt and a licensed pilot. He was preceded in death by his younger son, Gary, in 1988. Survivors include his wife, Gail; two daughters, Sheri Young of Dimmitt and Teresa Kemp of Fort Worth; a son, Curtis Carl II of Dimmitt; two brothers, Fred Jr. of Dimmitt and Mike of Amarillo; a sister, Sandra Baker of Dimmitt; and four grandchildren. Dacy on Jan. 5, 1943, in Albuquerque. Inez and her husband, Lauren, ranched and farmed for many years, and from 1984 to 1995 she owned the Country Tavern in Clayton. She was preceded in death by her husband on Feb. 5, 1992.
