Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jeff Conway, the Rev. Marty Loberg of the church and Dr. Murray Gossett of First Presbyterian Church officiating. Private family burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mrs. Brooks was born in Amarillo to Glenn and Babe Miller, and graduated from Amarillo High School in 1950. She attended First Presbyterian Church from the time she was a toddler and married her husband, Dick Brooks, there on July 4, 1952. At the time of her marriage, she was a charter member of Westminster Presbyterian Church which was meeting at the Children's Home. She earned her B.S. in secondary education from Southern Methodist University and received a M.Ed degree from West Texas State University. She taught English, journalism, speech and drama at Sam Houston Junior High. Continuing education courses and seminars were a lifelong interest. Mrs. Brooks was a passionate volunteer, unselfishly giving of her time to Northwest Texas Hospital Auxiliary, was a charter member of Republican Evening Women's Club, and served as the president of women of First Presbyterian Church. She volunteered as a lay minister at High Plains Baptist Hospital, St. Anthony's Hospice, CASA, Harrington Cancer Center and Presbyterian Children's Home. In addition, she found time to serve on the boards of Girl Scouts, YWCA, YWCO, and PTA. Her family will forever remember her as an "encourager." Mrs. Brooks had a warm heart for women suffering through divorce and helped many with spiritual guidance and her tender encouragement. She had a distinct, infectious laugh that will be deeply missed. Her love for others was intense and she once stated, "Teaching biblical principles to groups, large and small, and helping individuals with life's problems has been a deeply rewarding privilege." Mrs. Brooks a founder of Thursday Bible Study. She ministered to many people in need and taught the Gracious Woman course several times. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Allison Northern and Stacey Martin and husband, Jim, all of Amarillo; a sister, Sierra Sue Bagwell of Amarillo; and three grandchildren, Daniel, Jennifer and Lauren Northern. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Golden Gate Mortuary, 1416 N. Hughes St. Mrs. Scott was born Aug. 2, 1937, in Pampa. At the time of her death, she was a volunteer for Don and Sybil Harrington Cancer Center. She was a member of Mount of Blessing Adventist Church. Survivors include three sons, Ronald Bunton, Herman Scott and Eric Scott, all of Amarillo; a sister, Delma Ray Brackens of Amarillo; a brother, Nathaniel Bunton of Lamesa; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 7, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jose A. Hurtado Sr. Jose A. Hurtado Sr., 92, of Amarillo died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Friday in Llano Cemetery. Mr. Hurtado was born in Guanahuato, Mexico, and had been a resident of Amarillo for 59 years. He first worked for Santa Fe Railway and later retired from Amarillo Independent School District in 1975 as a gardener. He later worked as a custodian for Wesley Community Center. He married Maria Araujo on March 2, 1942, in San Angelo. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lucia Nava in 2001, and two brothers, Pablo Hurtado in 2003 and Erasamo Hurtado in 1975. Survivors include his wife; his children, Ignacio Hurtado of Houston, Eloisa Benavidez of Bushton, Kan., Mitridates Hurtado, Aurora Pereida, Lucinda Alaniz and Rebecca Hansen, all of Amarillo, Jose A. Hurtado Jr. of Hockley, Genaro Hurtado of Runaway Bay and Ulises Hurtado and Criseida Garcia, both of Boyd; a sister, Laurencia Perez of Los Angeles; 30 grandchildren; and 42 great- grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 7, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Herbert E. Breitling Herbert E. Breitling, 91, of Amarillo died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Martin Road Chapel, 1505 Martin Road, with the Rev. Chester O'Brien of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in Channing Cemetery in Channing. Mr. Breitling served in the Army as with the militarty police during World War II. After serving he moved to Hereford and farmed. He moved to Amarillo in 1950, and farmed and ranched here until his retirement in 1994. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Breitling, on Nov. 26, 2002. Survivors include a sister, Allene Morris of California; and many nieces and nephews. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. James Ikner, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in North Fairview Cemetery by Adams Funeral Home. Mrs. Emmert was born Nov. 22, 1910, to T.C. and Maggie Haralson Cass in Wellington. She married Doyal Aaron on Feb. 4, 1928, in Wellington. He preceded her in death in 1938. She later married J.C. Emmert on Dec. 13, 1941, in Sayre, Okla. He preceded her in death in 1981. Velma was a homemaker and formerly the Wellington High School librarian. She was a member of Church of the Nazarene and active in Nazarene Missionary International. She was preceded in death by her husbands; three sons, Thurman, Otis and J.V. "Shorty" Emmert; a grandson, Herman Clyde Childress; a sister, Ione Scott; and two brothers, Kenyth and Troy Cass. Survivors include five daughters, Corene Childress, Joy Aaron Emmert and Nancy Harris and husband, Joe, all of Wellington, Virginia Kimbro of Wichita Falls and Patsy Sue Meyer and husband, Ron, of Hugoton, Kan.; three sons, John "Dub" Emmert and wife, Eleanor, of Rocklin, Calif., Tommy Emmert of Wellington and Jack Aaron and wife, Jeaunell, of Burkburnett; a brother, Roy Cass of California; 22 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great- great-grandchildren. Hardin Hill HOWARDWICK - Thelma C. Hardin Hill, 82, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, in Clarendon. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in in Citizens Cemetery in Clarendon with the Rev. Bryan Knowles, pastor of Community Fellowship Church in Clarendon, officiating. Arrangements are by Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon. Mrs. Hill was born Sept. 7, 1921, in Clarendon. She had lived in McLean for 10 years before moving to Howardwick 20 years ago. She married Alma Wallace "Buck" Hill on May 22, 1941, in Clarendon. She had worked much of her life as a hairdresser before her retirement. She was a member of Howardwick Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband on Feb. 29, 1988. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Elmhurst Cemetery in Guymon, Okla., with Michael Nixon officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors. Mrs. Nicholson was born Dec. 12, 1933, in Sayre, Okla. She lived most of her life as a Dumas resident, where she worked as a bookkeeper. She was also very devoted to her family. Mrs. Nicholson was a Jehovah's Witness. Survivors include a daughter, Glenda Bollinger and husband, Ronnie, of Dumas; a son, Tony Nicholson of Dumas; a sister, June Chandler and husband, Coleman, of Perryton; a brother, Jimmy White and wife, Elizabeth, of Savannah, Ga.; a special family friend, Kay Atkins; and five grandchildren, Tony Jack, Cody, Timothy, Tera and Amber. Burial will be in St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery in Hereford. Mrs. Gonzalez was born Nov. 26, 1944, in Cotulla the daughter of Enriquez and Martina Balderaz. She married Juan Gonzalez at Cotulla in 1958. Mrs. Gonzalez was a homemaker and a member of Iglesia Catolica De San Jose in Hereford. She was preceded in death by her husband and three sisters. Survivors include three sons, Ricky Gonzalez of Hereford, and Esteban Gonzalez and Tony Gonzalez, both of Amarillo; two daughters, Becky Gaona and Angelica Gonzalez, both of Amarillo; a sister, Maria Ramirez of Cotulla; a brother, Ignacio Balderaz of Cotulla; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 7, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jewel Kerr Moore WHEELER - Jewel Kerr Moore, 95, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Aaron Laverty, pastor of Gageby Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home. Mrs. Moore was born to Mr. and Mrs. Silas P. Kerr in Montague County on March 10, 1909. After the death of her parents, as a young woman she moved to Dallas, where she worked at Sears and as an usher in a theater. Mrs. Moore later attended beauty school in Amarillo and owned and operated a beauty shop in Mobeetie for one and a half years. She was a telephone operator for a short time before she married J.C. Moore Jr. in Wheeler on June 30, 1927. She had lived in the Wheeler area since 1918. She was the mother of five children. Mrs. Moore was a member of First Baptist Church of Wheeler, Progressive Study Club, North Wheeler County Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Texola First Baptist Church with Charlie Floyd and Norman Rushing officiating. Burial will be in Texola Cemetery by Fatheree-Albert Funeral Home. Mrs. Nidiffer was born Jan. 19, 1903, in Weatherford, Texas. She married Thomas Lyle Nidiffer on Aug. 5, 1921, in Texola. Survivors include a son, Carlos Nidiffer of Erick; three granddaughters; seven great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. today in Ralls First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ken Horn and the Rev. Larry Reed-Farris officiating. Burial will be in Ralls Cemetery by Adams Funeral Home of Ralls. Mrs. Thomas was born Nov. 27, 1908, in Farmersville to John Cleveland and Dora Mae Benson King. She married John William Thomas on June 8, 1929. She was a graduate of Claude High School and the College of Industrial Arts in Denton, which is now Texas Woman's University. She moved to Ralls in 1944 from Kansas. She was a member of the Ralls First United Methodist Church, Ralls Garden Club, Ralls Study Club, and Order of Eastern Star. She was a member of the PTA and served as an officer on local and district levels, and was an officer of the Avion Travelcade Club. She was preceded in death by her husband on April 16, 1991. Survivors include two sons, John Thomas, Jr. and wife, Mary Nell, of Wolfforth and Jean Charles Thomas of Lubbock; a daughter, Anne Christian and husband, Tom, of Claude; eight grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. Virginia Gaines, 82, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Westlawn Cemetery in Borger, Texas, with the Rev. Ricky Griffin, pastor of Grace Fellowship Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Directors of Borger. Mrs. Gaines was born May 16, 1921, in Chickasha, Okla. She was a retired nurse's aide at North Plains Hospital in Borger. She loved cooking for the Phillips Blackhawks and being a member of Fairlanes Baptist Church, Eastern Star and Golden Spread Grandmothers Club. She had been a Borger resident for 60 years before moving to California to be closer to her family. Survivors include two sons, Sam Gaines of San Jacinto and Don Gaines of Fresno; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren, who all affectionately called her "Grannie." Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home in Borger. Mr. Dunn was a veteran of the Navy, serving during World War II. He worked for Texaco and retired in December 1988. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First Presbyterian Church in Amarillo with the Rev. Dr. Don McDonald, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Canyon, officiating. Burial will be in private. Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors. Mr. Hamil was born Oct. 14, 1941, in Sterling, Colo., to Dave and Genevieve Hamil. He earned a B.S. in animal husbandry in 1964 from Colorado State University. He served in the Colorado Air National Guard from 1964 to 1968. During the Vietnam War he served in the Air Force at Osan Air Base in South Korea from 1968 to 1969. He began his career with Friona Industries' Hi Pro Feeds Division in 1969 as production manager. In 1978, he was promoted to general manager. While at Hi Pro, Jack served as president of Texas Grain and Feed Association, a member of the advisory committee for Texas Tech Center for Feed Research and Education, a director of American Feed Association, and most recently as a director of American Feed Industry Insurance Co. His civic leadership included chairman of Prairie Acres Nursing Home board, Friona City Council member and director, director of Friona Chamber of Commerce and director of Plains National Bank in Friona. Jack was a member and ordained elder of First Presbyterian Church in Canyon. Jack was known as a man who loved his family and loved life, and he hated to leave so soon. Survivors include his wife, Jo; his children, Marc Hamil and wife, Desiree, and Chris Hamil and wife, Cynthia, all of Amarillo, Jennifer Blackmon and husband, Brad, of Fresno, Calif., Chris Wright and wife, Jana, and Joel Wright and wife, Stacy, all of Canyon, and Robin Martens of Grand Prairie; a sister, Jo Ostwald and husband, Don, of Fort Morgan, Colo.; a brother, Don Hamil and wife, Joan, of Sterling, Colo.; his mother-in-law, Lois McMullen of Canyon; and 10 grandchildren.
