Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 16, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Canyon Dr. Leta N. Boswell Dr. Leta N. Boswell, 87, of Canyon died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, in Amarillo. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church with Dr. Strauss Atkinson and the Rev. David Lowrie officiating. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors. Mrs. Boswell was born June 28, 1916, to John and Ealon Norvell in Stratford. She attended Mary Hardin Baylor University (then college), Baylor Medical School and interned at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. Since her retirement she had lived at Palo Duro Village in Canyon. Dr. Boswell left this life on Jan. 4, 2004, at the age of 87 years. She was married to Edwin Boswell of Waco, and they became the parents of Mac Boswell. Widowed at a young age, Dr. Boswell returned to her hometown of Stratford to teach school and be near her family. With their encouragement she completed medical school and subsequently practiced with her father for a time. After Dr. Norvell's death in 1946, Leta, Mrs. Norvell, her grandmother, Mrs. Henderson and Mac moved to Canyon, where she began her long medical career. She ministered to the aches and pains of hundreds of WT students, delivered probably thousands of babies and oversaw their growing up years, and in literally hundreds of ways endeared herself to the community. Her close working relationship with Drs. Neblett and Nester and Canyon's Hospital is a matter of record. But possibly equally sigificant is the fact of her loving participation in the lives of their families, which truly created a lasting "family-ness" which continued until her death. Dr. Boswell was active in her service to the Lord through First Baptist Church in Canyon, and over the years, worked at times in the nursery and later with foreign students as well as fulfilling numerous committee roles. Her son Mac's death at an early age was a severe blow to Dr. Boswell. Perhaps the contributions she chose to make to the education of her nieces and a large number of other young men and women was her positive response to that loss. Some of the students who lived in her garage apartment became a part of her extended family. Sonny and Veronica Rayos of Austin have remained close over the years in a wonderful sense. She was preceded in death by her husband; her son; her parents; a sister, Velma Norvell Blackwell; a niece, Bobby Jane Blackwell; and a nephew, John Norvell Blackwell. Survivors include her nieces and nephews, Ann Blackwell Laster of Gonzales, Claude North Blackwell of East Bernard and Willis Barfield Blackwell of Cuero; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; and a cousin, Norval Payne of Dallas. The family suggests memorials be to First Baptist Church's mission efforts or Crown of Texas Hospice in Amarillo.
