Morris QUANAH - Clarence E. Morris, 88, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, in Wichita Falls. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Smith Funeral Home with Larry DeLong officiating. Burial with military funeral honors will be in Quanah Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Morris was an Army sergeant and first class-gunner during World War II and received many awards including the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was a retired inspector for Georgia Pacific. Survivors include his wife, Beulah; two daughters, Faydean Brandon of Sheridan, Wyo. and Letha Francis Wheeler of Lubbock; two sons, Danny Morris and Charles E. Morris, both of Quanah; two sisters, Trudie Mahafee of Holliday and Beulah Brossart of Archer City; five brothers, Dudley Morris of Amarillo, Jesse Morris of Holliday, Jay Morris of Pampa, Gene Morris of Abilene and Orville Morris of Dallas; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; six step grandchildren; and four step great-grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, Feb. 1, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lazaro Gallegos DALHART - Lazaro Gallegos, 75, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, in Amarillo. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m Tuesday in Memorial Park Cemetery with Ron Hein, deacon of Saint Anthony's Catholic Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Horizon Funeral Home. Mr. Gallegos was born Nov. 23, 1928, in Roy, N.M. to Adan and Eufelia (Rivera) Gallegos. He joined the Army in July of 1948. On Sept. 13, 1952, he married Betty Vigil in Dalhart. He re-enlisted in 1955 and from 1958 to 1961, he served a tour in Germany. In 1965 he was sent to Japan and subsequently to Vietnam. He was reassigned to various bases until being assigned as ward master at Fort MacArthur, Calif., from 1971 to 1972. He was then assigned to William Beaumont Army Medical Center where he remained until his retirement in 1975. At retirement, he was a Sergeant First Class with many awards and ribbons, including the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Purple Heart, six good conduct medals, Army Occupation Medal (Japan), National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Vietnam Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Combat Medical Badge, Expert Field Medical Badge and numerous other ribbons and medals. In 1993 he and his wife moved back to Dalhart. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Adam Gallegos and a brother, Leo Gallegos. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Parkview Baptist Church with the Rev. Alan Egerton, pastor of Bible Baptist, and Trey Morgan, of Childress Church of Christ, officiating. Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. in Plymouth Cemetery, west of Samnorwood. Mrs. Favor was born Dec. 17, 1938, in Wellington to Jacob and Jennie Montgomery. She was raised in Samnorwood. She married Carroll Favor in 1955, and to this day, he is her best friend. She made her home in Childress and raised her two children. She was employed by the Harwell's of Childress and was manager of Childress Manor Apartments until her retirement this year. Helping others was her life. Survivors include a son, Rusty Favor of Childress; a daughter, Shelly Favor Preston of Childress; two sisters, Geneva King of New Mexico and Mot Coleman of Shamrock; two grandsons, Dustin Favor and Cody Favor, both of Childress; and her best friend, Carroll Favor of Giles. Mr. Burk was a resident of Kress for 62 years. He was former mayor of Kress. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Clinton Young officiating and the Rev. Bud Kidwell assisting. Burial will be at 4 p.m. in Shamrock Cemetery by Smith Funeral Home. Dr. Barbour was born Oct. 3, 1936, in Dumas. He was the son of the late H.E. and Mary (Leight) Barbour. He was a graduate of Tulia High School in 1955. He received his bachelor of science from Baylor University and his doctorate from the University of Texas at Galveston in 1963. He served his internship at Well County General Hospital in Greeley, Colo., and in 1990, he received a family practice fellowship. He married Fredericka Abbott on June 13, 1991, in Mobeetie. He was a resident of Quanah and a physician at Hardeman County Memorial Hospital and Clinic since 2001. He previously practiced in Wheeler, where he was instumental in organizing and establishing the Parkview Hospital. He was a member of First Baptist Church and served in the National Guard. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Ford was employed as a nurse at Northwest Texas Hospital. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Henrietta. Amarillo Globe-News, Feb. 1, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Don Bills Don Bills, 78, of Amarillo died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004. A private service will be held on Feb. 21. Arrangements are by Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40. Mr. Bills was an optimist in every sense of the word and a devoted family man. He was born Aug. 13, 1925, in Loving. He served in the Navy in World War II and obtained his degree in geology from Texas Tech University in 1949. He worked as a petroleum geologist for several oil companies in the United States and Canada before starting his own oil company in Denver in 1962. He had been a resident of Amarillo since 1968. He was an active member of the Amarillo Optimist Club for many years, serving as president from 1971 to 1973 and as lieutenant governor for North Texas District from 1976 to 1977. In 1995, the Amarillo Optimist Club honored him as a member emeritus. During the years he lived in Calgary, Alberta, he became a great fan of hockey and in the mid- 1970s, he and his wife were part owners of Amarillo's first professional hockey team, the Amarillo Wranglers. He was a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and the Panhandle Geological Society. He married Dorothy Hughes of Channing in 1944 and they were married for almost 58 years. He and his wife had the good fortune to be under the care of Cecilia Ramirez for many years. Cecilia is an angel sent from heaven who made it possible for them to remain in their home through their long and difficult illnesses. He was blessed in the last year and a half of his life to have the friendship of fellow musicans Bill Ham and Lucy Shelton and of his VA Scrabble Club members, Burt, June, Evelyn and too many other friends and neighbors to mention. If you were forturnate enough to know him, you knew a man who loved life, music and people. He will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Bills in January of 2001; his wife in October of 2001; his parents, John Rush and Clemmie Cook Bills; two brothers, J.R. Bills and Pat Bills; and a sister, Leota Miller. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Rector Funeral Home Chapel, 2800 S. Osage St., with Michael Beckworth and Jane Juett officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mrs. Carroll was born in Union County, Iowa, to Leonard and Thelma Iiams Thurman. She married Willis J. Carroll on March 12, 1955. They made their home in Texas, living first in the farm communities of Plainview, Kress and Silverton before moving to Amarillo in 1965. She worked as a bookkeeper for her husband's car dealership from 1965 until the time of her death. She spent her time volunteering with several local organizations, including the Parent Teachers Association, Girl Scouts, Track and Trail, Top of Texas Car Club, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Potter County Republican Party, Republican Women of Texas, Friends of San Jacinto and Route 66/6th Street Merchant's Association. In 2000, she received the Quackenbush Award for outstanding volunteer service to the Republican Party of America. In 1997, she and her oldest daughters began operating an antique store, Texas Ivy, on 6th Street. One of her favorite activities was the many antiquing trips they took throughout the tri-state area. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Ivy Marie Meroney in 1996; a sister, Evelyn Love in 2002; and a brother, Leonard Thurman Jr. in 1998. Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Linda Kelley, Dora Meroney and Cynthia Long, all of Amarillo; a son, Allen Carroll of Victoria; a sister, Beverly Devening of Tekamah, Neb.; and eight grandchildren. She was a wonderful grandmother and was dearly loved by her grandchildren. She had one greater love than her children and grandchildren and that was her great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, S. Curtis Dalton; two brothers, David Koelder and Calvin Koelder; her father, Kino Koelder; her mother, Eva Koelder; and her mother-in-law, Sarah Maples. Survivors include two sons, C. Mrs. Crespin married Facundo Crespin in 1941 in Logan. She worked in the kitchen at Cook's Restaurant.
