A rotating internship followed at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. He then enlisted in the Army Field Service Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the 96th Infantry Division, 382 Infantry Regiment as a first lieutenant on July 1, 1942. He served in the Pacific theater as a medical officer utilizing his expertise in tropical diseases obtained at Tulane. This was very important in the treatment of infectious diseases due to the fact that for every soldier wounded by the Japanese, two were victims of jungle fevers or infectious diseases. He initiated the first medical evacuation by helicopter in the Pacific. He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel, was decorated for bravery and was discharged April 8, 1946. After that, he continued his residency at Tulane University School of Medicine in obstetrics and gynecology from June 1947 until 1949. He was also an instructor at Tulane University in obstetrics and gynecology from July 1949 to 1950. In 1950 upon the recommendation of his mentor, Dr. Conrad Collins, Chief of Obstetrics at Tulane University, he came to Amarillo to begin his private practice. He was the first fully trained obstetrician/gynecologist and the first to be board certified with the American Board of OB/GYN in Amarillo, which is recognition by his peers for his knowledge and expertise. During his entire practice, he was instrumental in bringing new technology to the Panhandle area, some of which he researched personally by attending meetings and visiting with the originators and the scientists developing the new technology. He prided himself on being able to determine which technology would be successful and which would not be applicable in the future. He was able to convince local authorities of the benefits of the new technology such as fetal monitoring, ultrasound technology, laparoscopic surgery, laser technology and prevention of osteoporosis. He was instrumental with local pediatricians in the opening of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Northwest Texas Hospital for the treatment of highly premature infants and advanced the new technologies in the care of high- risk obstetrics in the Panhandle area. He served as president of the medical staff of Northwest Texas Hospital in 1965 and again in 1980. He was also the chief of the OB/GYN Department at Northwest Texas Hospital in 1973. He held membership and was invited to join in multiple medical associations. He was most proud of his involvement in the Central Association of OB/GYN, Tulane Association of Residents and Fellows, Texas Association of OB/GYN, American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, American Society of Fertility and the New York Academy of Science. In 1988, he retired from his active private practice of obstetrics and gynecology to accept a position as coordinator of indigent care at Northwest Texas Hospital until May 2002. However, he continued to be highly involved in the discussions for new technology and management of patients in women's health. Through the annual Early B. Lokey lecture series sponsored by Northwest Texas Hospital, he would bring outstanding speakers in the field of women's health to the community and open those lectures for the benefit of the physicians and nurses as well as patients who wanted to attend. He had been a member of the Presidents Council of Tulane University and the Amarillo Area Foundation. He was a member of Polk Street United Methodist Church. He and Marguerite Griffin were married on July 29, 1942, in Carlisle, Penn. He was preceded in death by a sister, Flora Emma Lokey; a brother, Hugh McWilliams Lokey; and an infant son, Barton Tomas Lokey. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Brooks Funeral Directors Chapel. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mrs. Stinson, a high school speech and drama teacher and little theater play director for most of her adult life, made her final curtain call on Sunday, seven days after her 91st birthday. Rose was the last of nine children born to Thomas Benjamin and Alice Texas Starkey. Rose was born on Feb. 7, 1913, in Plymouth. Shortly thereafter, the Starkeys moved to Wellington where she was raised and attended school. After serving as football queen and finishing Wellington High, she married one of the football captains, Raymond L. Powell, and was off to West Texas State Teachers College to major in speeh and drama. Rose knew early in life that her calling was teaching. Upon getting her teaching certification during the depression years, she taught private lessons and in the public schools for the next three-plus decades at Waka, Prairie View, Samnorwood, Dodson, Union, Hart, Perryton, Amarillo and Liberal, Kan. She mixed this with acting, directing plays and producing variety shows, always including as many people as possible. She started teaching in elementary school, coached boys basketball during the war, and then found her niche teaching speech and drama in high school. She was also a guidance counselor and a special education teacher. She directed plays at the Amarillo Theater. Retiring as a regular teacher, she and husband, Leroy Stinson, moved to Lake Havasu City, Ariz., where she helped start a dinner theater and directed plays at the community theater for another 14 years. When they moved to Canyon Palo Duro Village, she started directing variety shows using the talents of other retirees who lived at the village. She was in her mid-80s when she directed her last show. Rose was never idle. When she wasn't taking classes during the summer, she worked at something else. One summer she worked at an airplane factory in New York during World War II and then came home and started up a hamburger stand. Wherever she went she made friends, had a marvelous time and always took time to think of others. Late in life, she began taking art lessons and painted several pictures. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Canyon. A stay at home soccer mom she wasn't, but she was a great loving and fun mom to her two surviving children. Powell and Leroy D. Stinson. Survivors include two children, Ret. Col. Raymond R.
