"Len" Bender PANHANDLE - M.L. "Len" Bender, 91, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, in Amarillo. Services will be at 11 a.m. today in First Christian Church with the Rev. Ted Welch, pastor, and the Rev. Dave Theel, lay minister, officiating. Burial will be in Panhandle Cemetery by Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors. Mr. Bender was born Oct. 25, 1912, in Panhandle. He had been a lifetime resident of Panhandle. He was a farmer and security guard at Pantex. He married Ann Juanita Welch on June 20, 1937, in Canyon. He was a member of 55+ Club, Odd Fellows, Panhandle Volunteer Fire Department for 19 years and was fire marshall at one time. He was president of the guard union at Pantex in the early 1960s. He married Tommie Reid on Jan. 1, 1996, in Panhandle. He was preceded in death by his first wife in May 1981; a daughter, Wanda Bender in 1968; and his second wife on Jan. 2, 2004. Survivors include two sons, Marvin Lenard Bender Jr. and wife, Kim, of Amarillo and Ron Bender and wife, Pam, of Wichita Falls; a daughter, Martha Sheets of Canyon; six grandchildren, Ernie Sheets and wife, Cindy, and DeAnna Sheets, all of Canyon, Raquel Bender of Amarillo, Kyle Bender of College Station, and Kari Bender and Kathryn Bender, both of Wichita Falls; seven great-grandchildren; a niece, Mary Lou Watkins of El Paso; and the extended family of Tommie Reid Bender, children and grandchildren. Arrangements are by Stickley-Hill Funeral Directors of Canadian. Mrs. Arnold was born April 18, 1924, on the Newcomer Ranch near Higgins, to Charles G. and Charlotte Newcomer. She moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., from Amarillo in 1962, where she lived until 2002. She was preceded in death by a sister; and a son, Charles P. Arnold. Survivors include a son, Frank M. Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church in Canadian with the Rev. Ralph Chapman of Sayre, Okla., officiating. Burial will be in Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery by Stickley-Hill Funeral Directors. Mr. Vise was born March 18, 1917, to John Gaddy and Ina Ellen Barker Vise at Buck Creek in Collingsworth County. He graduated from Canadian High School in 1935. He married Lorene Meadows on Oct. 27, 1935, in Hemphill County. He married Lela Catherine Gray Meadows in 1991. Lafoy farmed and ranched in Hemphill County for more than 35 years. He was a silversmith, making jewerly for his family. He also enjoyed working on family genealogy and gospel music. He served as a deacon for First Baptist Church while living in Canadian. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years on Nov. 28, 1987, and a great- grandson, Tristen Gatlin in 1998. Survivors include three daughters, Linda Cox and husband, Marvin, and Becky Wilson and husband, Jodie, all of Amarillo, and Kay Gatlin and husband, Dan, of Briscoe; a brother, John C. Mrs. Huynh moved to Amarillo 23 years ago from Michigan. She had worked at IBP for 17 years. She married Bay D. Nguyen on Aug. 16, 1984, in Amarillo. She was a member of Our Lady of Vietnam Catholic Church and was also a member of the church choir. Survivors include her husband; three brothers, Hao Huynh of Vietnam, and Tam Huynh and Hiep Huynh, both of the United States; and three sisters, Chi Huynh, Phung Huynh and Ngan Huynh, all of the United States. Amarillo Globe-News, Feb. 27, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dan Johnson Dan Johnson, 75, of Amarillo died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors Bell Avenue Chapel, 5400 S. Bell St., with Howard Batson and Chester O'Brien officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mr. Johnson was a devoted family man, beloved Amarillo teacher and an avid West Texas State University fan. Dan was born on Mother's Day, May 6, 1928, the youngest of nine children born to Jim and Ida Myers Johnson of Canyon. He received his entire education, first grade through master's degree, from West Texas State. He attended West Texas Demonstration School from 1934 to 1946. Graduating from high school in 1946, he served two years in the Navy Seabees. After being honorably discharged, he attended West Texas State from 1948 to 1951, graduating with a bachelor's of science in speech. He was awarded a master of arts in education from WT in 1952. Dan began his life as a committed family man by joining with Laura Lee Chambers in holy matrimony on May 21, 1949. His teaching career began in Borger Junior High School, where he taught speech for four years. Dan then taught one year at South Oak High School in Dallas. He relocated his family permanently to Amarillo, where he taught speech and English at Sam Houston Junior High/Middle School for 28 years. A fierce competitor himself during his junior high and high school years, Dan was a devoted follower of WTAMU football and basketball, especially the Lady Buffs basketball teams. Dan and his wife were the first to be honored as Parents of the Year at West Texas State University. They were nominated by their daughter, Janet Hanson, the third of three daughters who attended WT. After retiring from the education profession, Dan and Laura (a 31-year teacher at Amarillo's Palo Duro and Tascosa High Schools) spent much of their time with family and with friends at Amarillo Senior Citizens Association 42 Club and 88 Club. They were members of Henry Brown Sunday school class at First Baptist Church of Amarillo. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Julie Hickmott and husband, Charles, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jeanie Johnson and Janet Hanson and husband, Tom, all of Amarillo; five grandchildren, Emily Hickmott of Huntington, W.Va., Jeff Hickmott and Marcy Hickmott Barrera and husband, Albert, all of Colorado Springs, and David Hanson and Andy Hanson, both of Amarillo; a sister, Ola Mae Williams of Commerce; many nieces and nephews; and his dog, Annie. Mrs. Brown was born Feb. 21, 1925, in Sylvester, to George M. Parsons and Krysta Brown Parsons, and was adopted by Newman L. and Vera Wood Carter. She graduated from Texas Tech University with a B.A. in English and married Charles G. Brown in Lubbock in 1946. She was a retired school secretary. She was a former member of First Christian Church and U&I Sunday School class in Amarillo. After moving to Fort Worth in 1998, she became a member of Richland Hills Christian Church in Fort Worth. Griggs and Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd. Mrs. Plachetka was born in Ashland, Wis., and raised in Wisconsin. She married Wallace Plachetka on May 10, 1942, in Milwaukee. They moved to Amarillo in 1953 from Wisconsin. She was active and enjoyed square dancing, round dancing, Mended Hearts and Amarillo Senior Citizens Association. She was also active in Girl Scouts for 20 years and volunteered at Baptist St. Anthony's Hospital and Canyon Hospital for many years. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1996, and a brother, Richard Hanson in 1994. Survivors include a daughter, Sandy Peters of Farmers Branch; and a sister, Norma Haberlin of Sulphur Springs. She was a retired cafeteria worker for Amarillo Independent School District. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion F. Riley on April 6, 2002, and a son, George Allen Riley. Shugart CLAYTON, N.M. - Jesse L. Shugart, 82, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, in Amarillo, Texas. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy Rammage, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Clayton Memorial Cemetery by Hass Funeral Directors. Mr. Shugart was born March 14, 1921, in Des Moines to O.L. Shugart and Fern (Brink) Shugart. He married Bonnie Jones on Sept. 13, 1941, in Pampa, Texas. Jesse served in the Army during World War II in the 1st Army, 4th Infantry Division. He served in the Rhineland Campaign, where he received the European- African-Middle Eastern Theater Medal, a Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Jesse also received the Combat Infantryman's Badge and was a lifetime member of DAV. Jesse and Bonnie moved to Gladstone in 1956. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Joy Key and Marvirene Shugart; a brother, Ted Shugart; and a son, Travis Michael Shugart on Jan. 15, 1998.
