Hodson Herbert O. Hodson, 94, of Amarillo died Wednesday, March 24, 2004. Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday in First Christian Church with Dr. James Cobb, senior minister, Dr. John Bridwell, minister emeritus, and the Rev. Sharon Wiese, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Olton, officiating. Private entombment will be in Llano Cemetery Mausoleum by Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street. The son of Orville Hodson and Emma Waterbury Hodson of Martin, S.D., he was born in Mitchell, S.D., Dec. 11, 1909, and graduated in 1930 with a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City, S.D. He was honorably discharged from the National Guard of the United States and South Dakota on Feb. 23, 1931. Following a brief employment with Westinghouse, just prior to the Depression, the job that started his 41 years in the electrical utility business was climbing poles and reading meters for Black Hills Power and Light in Rapid City. A transfer in 1938 sent him to Southwestern Public Service Co., where he initially worked in Roswell, N.M., before moving to its headquarters in Amarillo. During his 36 years of service with Southwestern Public Service Co., he designed and directed the building of most of the current day electrical power generation and transmission for that company, choosing low-cost, coal-fired plant options in place of nuclear, but adding air and water pollution and conservation controls and resource reuse and recycling that were far ahead of their time. A patent was awarded to him for his design of a "pot-holder," a device for attaching transformers to electrical poles. The nucleus of what is now Utility Engineering was developed under his direction. He officially retired as Chief Operating Officer and Vice President of Southwestern Public Service Co. on Dec. 31, 1974, but he never stopped creating and consulting in design engineering and electrical utility management or worrying about the direction of the company and the industry as a whole. As a registered professional engineer in Texas, New Mexico, Kansas and Oklahoma, Mr. Hodson was a member of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the Management Committee of Edison Electric Institute and the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, which advanced him to the grade of Fellow in 1962 for his contributions to the electrical utility industry. He served two six-year terms on the Texas Board of Engineers and was elected as chairman in 1958. He was a member of First Christian Church where he served on the board of directors and as chairman and was also a deacon and an elder. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Amarillo, the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce, the Amarillo Khiva Shrine Temple of the Masonic Order, the Y.M.C.A. and the Roswell Lodge of the Masonic Temple. He was listed in Who's Who in Engineering, Who's Who in Commerce and Industry and Dun & Bradstreet's Top Management. The arts, music, fine arts and crafts proved to be a lifelong passion and he not only collected, but also contributed through his beautifully designed and crafted muzzle-loading rifles, building 15 of them before physical limitations ended his work. He and Marjorie L. Gray were married Dec. 31, 1931. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1985 following 53 years of marriage. Survivors include his only daughter, Diane Hodson and her husband, Paul Tower, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a brother, Bruce Hodson and wife, Dorothy, of Rapid City; a sister, Barbara Bass of Aiken, S.C.; a sister-in-law, Garnet Audis of Martin, S.D.; a brother-in-law, Gene Mathisen of Dallas; a cousin, Harrol Waterbury of Oklahoma City; many beloved nieces and nephews; and many of his friends and neighbors. If he could have a last word to every one of you, I am sure he would borrow that line from a current day musical favorite: "If you have a choice to sit it out or dance...THEN DANCE!" The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity. The body will not be available for viewing.
