Prayer services will be at 7 p.m. today in Rix Funeral Directors Chapel. Services will be at 2 p.m Monday in Rix Funeral Directors Chapel with Elda Olivares, of New Hope Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Burial will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Park. Mrs. Valdez was born Dec. 31, 1924, in Crystal City to Basilio Alvarado and Porfiria Gonzalez. She married Marcelino Valdez in 1952 in Edinburg. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Sam Valdez of Hereford and Jorge Valdez of Mission; three daughters, Herminia Rangel, Sally DeLaCruz and Blanca Ramos, all of Hereford; a sister, Elsa Cervantez of Edinburg; three brothers, Juan Alvarado of Mexico and David Alvarado and Otoniel Alvarado, both of Edinburg; 19 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Edwin Waterbury and the Rev. Harrol Waterbury, both retired Apostolic Faith ministers, and the Rev. Ron Noble, pastor of the Pampa Chapel of the Apostolic Faith, officiating. Burial will be in Ochiltree Cemetery in Perryton. Mrs. Simmons was born May 13, 1908, on Block 4-T, T&NO Ry Survey in Ochiltree County to H.T. "Bud" and Alice Amanda Forbes Gilliam of Wawaka. She accepted Christ as her Savior when she was nine years of age and lived an exemplary Christian life for her entire lifetime. On Sept. 7, 1930, she married Edwin Evans Simmons at Gruver. The couple made their home in Ochiltree County until 1939 when they moved to Amarillo. They were residents of Amarillo until 1945 then moved to Pampa in Gray County where she continued to live until her death. She and Edwin had one child, Paul Simmons. She was a member of Pampa Chapel of the Apostolic Faith. She was preceded in death by her parents; her only brother, James P. Gilliam; a niece, Joyce Elaine Gilliam; and her husband on Dec. 26, 2003. Survivors include a son, Paul Simmons, and wife, Ione Martin Simmons of Pampa; two grandchildren, J. Vondel Stevens and husband, Scott, of Canyon and E.P. Simmons of Chicago; a great-grandson, Timothy Stevens of Canyon; three nieces, Rubyjo Wilbanks and husband, J.D., of Spearman, Eltha Hensley and husband, Marvin, of Pampa and Bertha Ann Leflet and husband, Charles, of Texas City; a nephew, Leslie Gilliam and wife, Elena, of McAllen; a sister-in-law, Beatrice Putman and husband, Rex, of Pea Ridge, Ark. Seitz WELLINGTON - J.W. Seitz, 79, died Friday, April 2, 2004. Services will be at 3 p.m today in Primitive Baptist Church with T.J. Pittman officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens Cemetery by Adams Funeral Home. Mr. Seitz was born April 8, 1924, in Mobeetie to Jeff Seitz and Hollie Elliott Seitz. He was a veteran of the Army, serving in World War II. He was an auto mechanic at Clark Chevrolet from 1961 to 1967 when he opened his garage. He retired in 1996. He was a former member of the Wellington Kiwanis Club and was a Methodist. He came to Wellington in 1961 from Kellerville. He married Billie Bullington on Oct. 20, 1950, in Clovis, N.M. He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Wayne Seitz in 1964; five brothers; and four sisters. Mr. Robinson was the vocational agriculture teacher in the Hereford school system for 28 years. He sponsored the Hereford Young Farmers Association. He was past commander of American Legion Post No. 192. He served in the Army in World War II in the 63rd Division Field Artillery. Survivors include his wife, Patricia; four sons, Lee Robinson of Odessa, Otis Robinson of Smithfield, N.C., Jess A. Lamb, 69, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004, in Amarillo. Memorial services will be at 5 p.m. Monday at First Christian Church with Ted H. Welch Sr., pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by N.S. Griggs and Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd. For approximately 20 years, Mr. Lamb had to contend with the effects of multiple sclerosis, but throughout this period, he maintained an active and rewarding lifestyle for himself and many others. He was born in Pampa on Feb. 4, 1935. His father was Melvin E. Lamb, who was employed by Stanolind Oil and Gas Co., and Leah Caldwell Lamb, who was a distinguished teacher of biology at Pampa High School. After attending Sam Houston School and Pampa High School in Pampa, Spring Creek School near Borger and The Saulsbury School in Connecticut, he studied at Lehigh University and received his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Texas Tech in Lubbock. After graduation from college, he served in the Army and then worked for the Thiokol Corp. in Elkton, Md., and at the Pantex Plant near Amarillo. Through his amateur radio call letters, W5GAF, he was known on every continent throughout the world. He enjoyed sailing and was an accomplished photographer. Survivors include his brother, David Lamb of Kennett Square, Penn.; two sons, Steven Lamb of Amarillo and Matthew Lamb of Vian, Okla.; and six grandchildren. Mr. Evans was a member of United Methodist Church of Gruver. He was the Hansford County weather watcher from 1971 to 2004. He was formerly employed by the city of Gruver and owned and operated Don Evans Trucking. He was a former member of the Gruver Fire Department. "Junior" Chaparro, 52, of Amarillo died Thursday, April 1, 2004. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in N.S. Griggs and Sons Funeral Directors Pioneer Chapel, 2615 Paramount Blvd., with Glendell Smith, chaplain of BSA Hospital, officiating and Wes Langham and Bob Williams assisting. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mr. Chaparro was born in San Antonio and raised in Wichita, Kan. He moved to Amarillo in 1963. He graduated from Caprock High School in 1971. He served in the Army and was honorably discharged. He was employed at Baptist St. Anthony's Hospital from 1977 until the time of his death. He was married to Lori for 25 years, who remained by his side until the end. He played and coached a variety of softball teams in men's and mixed leagues. He was also a member of the Amarillo Bowling Association and bowled on several leagues. He was preceded in death by his mother, Aurora Chaparro; a sister, Maria Chaparro; two brothers-in-law, Joe Molina of Clovis, N.M., and his best bud, Victor Kinikin of Panhandle; and a niece, Andrea Kinikin. In 1938, she married Charles E. Davis. She was a very active member of P.E.O., the Desk and Derrick Club, the Democratic party and the Sarah Bowen Circle. She worked as the office manager for the William H. Bush Estate. She was also a real estate broker dealing with farm and ranch real estate. She was a huge fan of OU and enjoyed sports of all types, especially basketball. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband; and four sisters. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening and doing for others. She worked for J.C. Penney for 18 years before retiring in 1983. She was a member of the Fun Seekers R.V. Club, Chapter 60. She was a Southern Baptist. She graduated from Quail and continued her schooling in Canyon. She married Frank Tipps in 1933. Her second marriage was to Robert Chambers in 1944. The last of 11 brothers and sisters, she was a hard worker, who deeply loved her family. She had a gracious, loyal and generous spirit, with an unfailing sense of humor. She is treasured and will be missed. Survivors include her son, Gene Tipps of Las Cruces; three grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Polk Street United Methodist Church with Dr. James E. Garrett, senior pastor, and the Rev. Marty Hamrick, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Mr. Nipp was born June 9, 1931, in Blair, Okla., to Harold and Alice Nipp of Blair. He was a graduate of Blair High School in 1949, Oklahoma State in 1950 and Southwest Oklahoma State in 1953. He received his master's degree from the University of Texas and received an administrators license at West Texas State University. He married Jo Reta Lankford Nipp on Sept. 10, 1950, in Blair. He served in the Army from 1953 to 1956. He coached at Vinson, Okla., Woodward, Okla., and taught and coached at Caprock High School in 1963. He served as assistant principal Caprock High School in 1970, principal at Bowie Middle School in 1974 and principal at Tascosa High School in 1975 where he retired from in 1990. He was an active member of Polk Street United Methodist Church, Downtown Lions Club and Texas Teacher Retirement Association and belonged to the Masonic Lodge. He was inducted into the Tascosa Rebel Hall of Fame in 1999. Amarillo Globe-News, April 4, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Iris Ann Gibbs Iris Ann Gibbs, 77, of Amarillo died Friday, April 2, 2004. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Monday in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd., with the Rev. J. Alan Ford, pastor of Southwest Baptist Church, officiating. Private burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mrs. Gibbs was born in Amarillo. She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church. She married Rolla Alton Gibbs on Dec. 22, 1946, in Amarillo. Survivors include her husband; a son, Duncan Gibbs of Atlanta; a daughter, Rebecca Bailey of Amarillo; a brother, Dale Duncan of St. Louis; three grandsons, David Duncan, Bryan Duncan and Michael Duncan; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Bailey. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Stephen United Methodist Church with Dr. Jim Smith, senior pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Mr. Cameron was born in Basin, Wyo. He graduated from Themopolis High School in Wyoming. He received his bachelor of science degree in animal husbandry from the University of Wyoming. He attended officer candidate school and was commissioned in the Navy where he served in the Korean Conflict for three years. He then returned to the University of Wyoming and received his master's degree in business administration. He married Molly Denley on June 26, 1964, in Wellington. They moved to Amarillo in 1966 where he was secretary/treasurer of West Texas Equipment until retirement. He held CPA certification in Colorado and Texas. He was past chairman of the finance committee and on the board at St. Stephens United Methodist Church. He was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity and a life member of the Military Officers of America. He was a member of the Retired Commander Naval Reserve and the Masonic Lodge in Wyoming. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Bryan Cameron of Franklin, Tenn., and Darrin Cameron of Amarillo; two brothers, Murray Cameron of Olympia, Wash., and William Cameron of Omaha, Neb.; and four grandchildren, Ty, Morgan, Thomas and Beth. Amarillo Globe-News, April 4, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lois "Deannie" Simmons Lightfoot Lois "Deannie" Simmons Lightfoot, 83, of Amarillo died Friday, April 2, 2004. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Llano Cemetery with the Rev. Luther Laster, of Joy Fellowship, officiating. A celebration of her life will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Joy Fellowship of Amarillo with the Rev. Luther Laster, pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Mrs. Lightfoot was born March 21, 1921, in Childress. She was a member of Joy Fellowship of Amarillo, where she was an active member. She lived at the Winwood Village Apartments, where she was very active in her garden at the apartment. She participated in the exercise program and other activities and formed sing-a-long's for the fellow residents. She had worked as a silk finisher for several cleaners in Amarillo. She was preceded in death by a brother; her father, James Simmons; and her mother, Lessie Simmons. Survivors include three sisters, Mary Kibler and Edna Honeycutt, both of Amarillo and Agnes Ulmer of New Orleans; a brother, Buddy Simmons of Redding, Calif.; eight nieces, 14 nephews; and numerous great-nieces and nephews. Amarillo Globe-News, April 4, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Elsewhere Horace Layton LaFever LUBBOCK - Horace Layton LaFever, 93, died Friday, April 2, 2004. Memorial services wil be at 1 p.m. Monday in Second Baptist Church. Arrangements are by Resthaven Funeral Home. Mr. LaFever was born Aug. 30, 1910 in Martha, Okla., to the late W.E. and Katherine Viola Green LaFever. Shortly afterwards, he moved with his family to Hardeman County where he spent his youth. He married Mildred Wilson on March 23, 1940, in Goodlett. He served in the Army Field Artillery for three years at Fort Sill, Okla., before serving 2 years in World War II with the 31st General Hospital in the South Pacific under General McArthur. He resided in Dumas for 20 years where he owned and operated Hoss's Garage. After retiring in 1974, he moved to Hereford and in 1993 moved to Lubbock. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 192 of Dumas and a member of Second Baptist Church in Lubbock. He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters; and his wife in 1998. Survivors include two daughters, Lou Ann LaFever of Lubbock and Sue Hill and husband, Jim, of Ransom Canyon; three grandchildren, Christina Hill of DeSoto, Sandra Whisner and husband, Charles, of Lubbock and Jason Hill of Los Angeles; and three great-grandsons, Christopher, Nicholas and Dominic Whisner of Lubbock. Services will be at 2 p.m Monday in Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 6969 E. Interstate 40, in Amarillo with Billy Nickell, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Buchanan married Hermon Buchanan on June 23, 1934, and they celebrated 62 years of marriage. Her employment during her life included Dutton Cleaners, Fashion Corner and Designs of Texas. She was a charter member of San Jacinto Assembly of God in Amarillo and attended First Assembly of God in Amarillo. Survivors include three sons, Noel Buchanan and wife, Louetta, of Riggins, James Buchanan and wife, Tammy, of Boise, Idaho, and Michael Don Buchanan and wife, Frankie, of Amarillo; a daughter, Margie Howse of Flushing, Mich.; three brothers, Lee Brown and wife, Bernadine of Ponca City, Okla., David Brown of Houston and Calvin Brown of Amarillo; two sisters, Irene Hall and husband, Jack, and Barbara Honea and husband, Sonny, all of Amarillo; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in First Baptist Church in Hereford with the Rev. Terry Cosby officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Sudan City Cemetery in Sudan, Texas, by Parkside Chapel Funeral Home. Mrs. Powell was born Oct. 9, 1924, in Turkey, Texas, the daughter of Henry and Ora Lee Gilbert. She married William Powell on June 7, 1946, in Sudan. Survivors include a daughter, Sharli Rogers of Bowling Green; three brothers, Allan Gilbert of Pottsville, Texas, Mickey Gilbert of Livingston, Texas, and Ron Gilbert of Tahoka, Texas; a grandchild; and two step-grandchildren.
