Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Schooler Funeral Home Brentwood Chapel, 4100 S. Georgia St., with the Rev. Larry Brooks officiating. A second service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Westminster Baptist Church in Westminster. Burial will be in Elmgrove Cemetery in Westminster. Mrs. Miles, a longtime resident of Amarillo, died Tuesday. She was born in Westminster on Oct. 17, 1913. She married Ralph L. Miles in Dallas in 1942. Mrs. Miles was a member of Amarillo Senior Citizens Association and Swinging Senior Dancers. She had worked for Southwestern Drug in Amarillo for 40 years before retiring in 1981. Mrs. Miles belonged to Polk Street United Methodist Church. The family would like to publicly thank Dr. Ron Rankin, the staff of Crestview Assisted Living Center and Ware Memorial for their care, love and dedication. She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years in 1985; her parents, Minnie and DeWitt Hood; six brothers, Glenn Hood, Odell Hood, Boyd Hood, Doyle J. Hood, Brodie Hood and Homer Hood; a sister, Mae Davis; and a special friend, Richard Seymore in 2000. Survivors include her beloved nieces, nephews and their families; and her many friends and fellow co-workers. The family suggests memorials be to BSA Hospice, P.O. Amarillo Globe-News, April 8, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Claude Keener Claude Keener, 91, of Amarillo died Tuesday, April 6, 2004. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 6969 E. Interstate 40, with Glen Walton, assistant pastor of Bell Avenue Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Keener was born Sept. 26, 1912, in Hollene, N.M. He worked on the family farm during the Depression until 1931, when he came to Amarillo. He finished business school and started a career with J.I. Case Tractor Co., retiring in 1979. He married Becky Dooley Cox in 1939. He was a very gentle soul, who enjoyed gardening and teaching Bible classes to the college-age members in the church. He was a man, though small in size, large in his giving of time and his wisdom and will be greatly missed. He was a member of Bell Avenue Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1979; a sister, Faye Vinyard; and two brothers, Rube and Lester Keener. Survivors include two sons, Claude Marvin Keener and Berry Cox, both of Amarillo; a daughter, Evelyn Moody of Amarillo; a brother, Gene Keener of California; two grandsons, Berry Thomas Cox of Austin and Larry Cox and wife, Judy, of Amarillo; three great-grandchildren; and five great-great- grandchildren. Mrs. Scamahorn was born Nov. 30, 1924, in Hollywood, Calif., to Julius E. and Margaret W. Adelmann. She graduated from Amarillo High School in 1941 and was a 1944 graduate of University of Colorado. She married John Scamahorn in Amarillo on March 9, 1945. She was a homemaker and a community volunteer. Survivors include her husband; and two daughters, Ann Scamahorn and Ellen Scamahorn Stallings and husband, Eddie, all of Amarillo. Mrs. Land was born Nov. 25, 1917, in Quanah to Martin and Nora Fowler. She married Garland M. Land on Dec. 26, 1933. She moved to Amarillo in 1959. She worked as a civil servant at the Air Force Base in Amarillo. She will be forever missed. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1968; her parents; an infant daughter, Jeanette Land; three brothers; and two sisters. Survivors include two daughters, Frances Janow and Cheryl Griffin and husband, P.J., all of Amarillo; two sons, Ronald Land and wife, Gloria, and Roger Land, all of Amarillo; a sister, Laura Loraine Powell of Waco; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson. Mrs. Townsend was born July 23, 1923, in Maysville, Okla. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and loved to play golf. Miss Beagle was a homemaker. She was a native of Borger and was a lifetime resident. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church of Stinnett. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First Presbyterian Church of Hereford with the Rev. John Bethard and Dr. Stacy Conner officiating. Burial will be in private. Arrangements are by Parkside Chapel Funeral Home. Mrs. Barrett was born Dec. 5, 1929, in Claude, the daughter of G.D. and Del Caldwell. She graduated from Claude High School as the salutatorian in 1947. Mrs. Barrett graduated with a bachelor's degree in education from West Texas State University in 1950. In 1952, she graduated with honors and received her master's degree in sociology from West Texas State University. On Sept. 6, 1952, she married Frank Barrett in the Joseph Hill Memorial Chapel on the West Texas State University campus. She was very active throughout her life with her husband, Frank, in farming and the cattle business. Mrs. Barrett was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, Alpha Chi Honor Society and a member of First Presbyterian Church in Hereford. She was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Caldwell. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Bruce Barrett and wife, Cindy, of Muleshoe and Steven Barrett of Dallas; a daughter, Nancy Purcell of Dallas; a sister, Gloria Viersen of Rancho San Margarita, Calif.; three grandchildren, James Barrett and Megan Barrett, both of College Station, and Jason Purcell of Dallas. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park by Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors. Mr. Jones pastored at Sanford Baptist and Harvest Baptist in Minnesota. He was known as the "Pipeline Preacher." Mrs. Loftin was born Feb. 17, 1920, in Tulia. She married Vernon Loftin on June 6, 1942, in Clovis, N.M. "Bud" Van Dever, 86, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004. Services were Saturday. Arrangements were by McCoy Funeral Home. Mr. Van Dever was raised in Amarillo and graudated from Price College in Amarillo. He also graduated from Hardin-Simmons University, where he played on the three-year undefeated football team. He was a major in the Marine Corps and served in the South Pacific during World War II. He was an intelligence officer during the Korean War and was one of two Marines in leadership with the Allied Strategic Command. He was a longtime member of Sweetwater Rotary Club and received a Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary Club of Amarillo. After serving his country in the Marine Corps, he lived in Sweetwater, where he was in the printing business. He and his wife, Johnye were married 64 years. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mila Gibson of Amarillo and Sweetwater and Jane Van Dever-Collins of Corsicana and Sweetwater; a son, John C. "Scissors" Van Dever Jr. of Georgetown and Sweetwater; three sisters, Mary Lou Beverley of Amarillo, Marge Chase of Covina, Calif., and Patricia Mendoza of Los Angeles; five grandsons, John "Thumper" Gibson, David Gibson, John C. Mr. McCarty served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was co-owner of Southwest Filter and Supply for 16 years. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Anne; three sons, Shawn McCarty, Butch McCarty and Pat McCarty, all of Phoenix; three daughters, Suzy Florence of Lubbock, and Laura McCarty and Debra Holtorf, both of Phoenix; three granddaughters; two brothers, Clifford McCarty and Terry McCarty; and a sister, Carol McCarty.
