Stephens PAMPA - Melvin W. Stephens, 77, died Monday, April 12, 2004. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Scott Penrod, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mr. Stephens was born June 18, 1926, in Five Points, Ala. He had been a resident of Pampa since 1944, moving from Alabama. He owned and operated Stephens Truck and Equipment since the 1960s. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and Top O' Texas Masonic Lodge No. 1381 AF&AM. Survivors include a son, Jerry Stephens and wife, Paula, of Dallas; a daughter, Judy Magness and husband, Larry, of Opelika, Ala.; a brother, W.C. Stephens of Roanoke, Ala.; and a grandson, Jonathan Magness of Graz, Austria. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John Bethard officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Killeen Memorial Park Cemetery in Killeen by Parkside Chapel Funeral Home. Mr. Smith was born May 5, 1931, in Schenectady, N.Y., the son of Benjamin and Margaret Smith. He was an Air Force veteran and served during the Korean War. He had been a CPA for more than 40 years, serving primarily as business manager or administrator for different school districts. He was last employed by Hereford Independent School District. Mr. Smith was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Hereford, where he served as elder, treasurer and Sunday school teacher, as he did in his former churches. He was a former Boy Scout leader, a member of Texas Association of CPA's, Texas Retired Teachers Association, Hereford Retired School Employees, Hereford Senior Citizens and was very active in Special Olympics programs. On Oct. 30, 1954, he married Nancy Herr in Rochester, N.Y. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin Smith and Herbert Smith; and a sister, Florence Rice. Survivors include his wife; four sons, Kevin Smith of Springville, Ala., Kurt and wife, Denise, of Flowermound, Kyle Smith of Grand Prairie and Kent Smith of Hereford; a daughter, Karen Walker and husband, Eddie, of Taylor; a brother, Stanley Smith of Yorba Linda, Calif.; and six grandchildren. Mr. Chesher was born Aug. 1, 1938, in Durant, Okla., to Jessie O. and Bessie Petty Chesher. A 1957 graduate of Amarillo High School, he moved to Friona in 1958 from Amarillo. He married Linda O'Brian on Aug. 20, 1960, in Friona. He attended Friona United Methodist Church. He was a farmer. Survivors include his wife; his mother of Friona; four daughters, Cindy D. Adams of Amarillo, Cathy L. Shields and Charla B. Chesher, both of Friona, and Cristy A. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Morrison Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Bob Ulrey, pastor of First Baptist Church in Cactus- Etter, officiating. Burial will be in Dumas Cemetery with flag detail by American Legion Post 224. Mr. Phillips was born Dec. 18, 1923, in Roff, Okla. He was a Dumas resident since 1950. He married Elizabeth M. Ratliff on March 14, 1944, in Carnegie, Okla. He served in the Army during World War II fron 1943 to 1946. He was a Dumas police crossing guard for two years and a junior high custodian for 13 years. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 9022 of Dumas. He was owner/operator of Ed's Used Furniture from 1963 to 1982. He worked at Diamond Shamrock. He was preceded in death by his wife on April 20, 1999. Survivors include a son, Tommy Phillips of Amarillo; two daughters, Kathie Black and Lena Hanson, both of Dumas; two brothers, Bobby Phillips of Dayton, Okla., and Ronnie Joe Phillips of Enid, Okla.; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 6969 E. Interstate 40. Mr. Boyer was born Feb. 4, 1918, in Shawnee, Okla. He began working for the gas company in Oklahoma City reading meters. He retired at age 65 as head accountant at Pioneer Natural Gas in Amarillo in 1983. He and his wife, Evelyn, were members of Southwest Church of Christ in Amarillo for many years. He resided in Houston with his daughter, Jeanette, and son-in-law since September 1994. Survivors include his children, Jeanette Wren and husband, Thelton, of Houston, Vanlyn Ray and husband, Dusty, of Oklahoma, Janlyn Mahlman of Denver and Mike Lyons and wife, Sue, of Amarillo; six grandchildren, Johnny Wren, Kelly Wren, Fonda Mancina, Robin Clements, Tosh Lyons and Kiley Lyons; and 12 great-grandchildren. Private burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mrs. Gahn was born in 1906 on the family farm near Eastern Street and St. Francis northeast of Amarillo. She attended Amarillo public schools. She received her BS and master of arts degrees from West Texas State Teachers College. Elizabeth Giles married Hershell L. Weller on Oct. 4, 1931, in Tulsa, Okla. Following his death in 1937, she returned to Texas and taught school in McLean, White Deer, Borger and finally in Amarillo at San Jacinto Elementary School. She was active in Amarillo teacher organizations and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society. She started one of the first libraries in an Amarillo elementary school. She also started the library at Paramount Baptist Church and the library at Park Place Towers. She was still active in the library at Park Place Towers at the age of 94. She recieved many awards for her service, including one from the Southern Baptist Convention. She was a member of Paramount Baptist Church. She married Churchill F. Gahn on March 27, 1943. He preceded her in death in 1985. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ann O'Keefe and husband, Jay, of Amarillo; two sisters, Cindy Kennedy and Martha C. She was a homemaker and a devoted Christian. She had love and compassion for everyone, especially Jews. She married Earl N. Loper in 1935. He preceded her in death in 1966. She married Garland Horton in 1968 at Amarillo. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Christy E. She graduated from Perryton High School and West Texas State University with her bachelor's and master's degrees. She was an elementary school teacher for 35 years, teaching in Neely Ward, Whiteface and Abernathy, the last 25 of those at Plains. She belonged to several state and national teacher organizations and was past president of Gamma Lambda Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. She married Roger G. Harvey at her home in Perryton on May 21, 1936. After retirement in 1977, she and her husband moved to Red River, N.M., and built their dream home by hand. In 2000 they moved to Amarillo. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Rojanna Luster of Wildorado and Norma Strickland of Amarillo; a brother, Gordon Riley of Cordova, Tenn.; a sister, Minnie Hastings of Los Angeles; nine grandchildren; and 20 great- grandchildren. Garrett, senior minister of Polk Street Methodist Church, officiating. Private burial was in West Park Cemetery in Hereford. Mrs. Lamb was born Dec. 11, 1905, in Hereford, a member of the Higgins family, who was one of the first two families in Deaf Smith County. The family moved to a dugout south of Hereford in 1890. In 1926, she married Arthur J. Lamb. She was office manager for Drs. Patton and Carroll for approximately 40 years. She was a member of ABWA, Pilot Club and the Vaughn Selby Sunday school class at Polk Street United Methodist Church. Her son, Arthur, wishes to express thanks for the excellent care given to Peggy in the Amarillo Nursing Center and BSA Hospice. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1937. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Ms. Mays was a longtime resident of Amarillo. She was born Dec. 29, 1929, in Fort Cobb, Okla. She was of Osage Indian descent. Her strength and faith sustained her. She was lovingly cared for her last few years by her daughter, Season. She is with God now. Survivors include two daughters, Saundra Thompson of Stafford, Va., and Season Stalter of Amarillo; and two sisters, Lorena Leachman of El Dorado, Kan., and Betty Bean of Fort Worth. Mrs. Wilson was born June 29, 1917, to Dan and Dora Cavanagh in South Texhoma. The family moved to Claude when she was a young girl. She graduated from Claude High School in 1935 and was a graduate of Amarillo College of Hair Design. She was a hairstylist in Claude, Groom, Panhandle and Amarillo. She was later employed with Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. The former Annie Lou Cavanagh married Herman Lee Wilson on Oct. 2, 1949, in Amarillo. After 32 years of service as a telephone operator, she retired in May 1979. Mrs. Wilson was an active union steward and lifetime member of CWA Local 6128 and a lifetime member of Telephone Pioneers of America. She was a Christian and a member of Pleasant Valley Christian Church. She graduated as class salutatorian in 1981 from Tascosa High School, receiving the first Joni Whitlock Scholarship. She then attended Texas A&M and Amarillo College. Carole was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1982. She attended West Texas A&M University, graduating in 1985. She then attended and graduated from Texas Tech School of Medicine in 1989. She received her license to practice medicine in Texas in 1991. Carole practiced medicine in Amarillo with a specialization in Psychiatry until her heatlh required her to retire. She married Raymond Scott Graham in 1993. Carole participated in many different professional and social organizations including Morning Star and the HOST program at AISD. She was a member of First Church of Christ Scientist. She was a member of the board of directors of the Amarillo Area Foundation for many years. She was preceded in death by her father, Delmar Durrett in 1978. Survivors include her husband; her mother, Patricia Patton Durrett of Amarillo; four brothers, John Randall Durrett of Lubbock, Robert Durrett and Allen Durrett, both of Amarillo, and Louis Durrett of Austin; eight nephews; and seven nieces. Memorial services will be at 5:07 p.m. Thursday in First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Murray Gossett officiating. Private entombment will be in Llano Mausoleum. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mrs. Grays graduated from Jarvis Christian College with a bachelor of science degree in math studies and a minor in English literature. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. She married Keith Grays on Aug. 3, 1985. Jackie's love for children surpassed any area of concern during her lifetime. Jackie first developed a love for volunteering while assisting Mrs. Billie Taylor in a clothing bank for needy children. She spent three consecutive summers working in the clothing bank and personally delivered clothes to children who always greatly appreciated her thoughtfulness. Jackie was the first African-American woman in Amarillo accepted into the Amarillo Junior League. After completing her provisional classes in Junior League and taking on active membership, her placement duties were manifold. She volunteered with the Domestic Violence Shelter for Women, was the Teen Court coordinator/advisor and Camp Cactus director/coordinator. She loved Funfest and always worked to get tickets sold for Best of Texas. Jackie served a three-year term on West Texas A&M Foundation Board of Directors, Marsh Minority Scholarship Steering Committee and Potter Court Grand Jury Commission. Mrs. Grays was a math teacher at Horace Mann Middle School for 20 years. During her tenure at Mann Middle School she coordinated several projects. She served as coordinator for Service Learning, a project to introduce students to various job descriptions in corporate America, Best Friends coordinator, Drug Prevention coordinator, Red Ribbon Rally Campaign and organized numerous sleep overs and weekend activities for students. She chaired the Ushers Committee for Baptist Hospital Health Care Lyceum with Gen. Colin Powell as guest speaker. She and Keith chose students from all the local high schools to assist with this project. Students were awed at the fact that they had been asked to participate in this endeavor with the general. She traveled to workshops throughout her tenure and served on a statewide committee to compose the mathematical Texas Assessment of Academic Skills exams for the State of Texas. She worked diligently to assist her husband, Keith, in the promotion and capital campaigns for several projects. They were instrumental in securing the contract to bring Mrs. Rosa Parks to Amarillo, Oprah Winfrey and staff to Mount Zion Baptist Church and hosted Grammy Award Winning Artists Kirk Franklin, Hezekiah Walker and Yolanda Adams. Along with her husband, Jackie campaigned for support to build a greenhouse for her Service Learning students and raised $20,000 during the campaign. This project is to be located on the Horace Mann campus. Jackie retired from her career and was presented her 20-year pin and a scrumptious chocolate cake covered with her favorite pink roses and green leaves. She loved to read and travel and spend time with family. Rarely did she miss a family trip or gathering. She was a quiet strength and a brave spirit, loved by all who knew her. Jackie leaves a legacy for generations to come and a smile that will keep our hearts warm forever. Words cannot express the gratitude she and her family have for the staff of BSA Hospice and a very special thanks to Dr. William Robinson and staff. She was preceded in death by her mother, Arena Peters. He loved to pray for family members, watch his favorite shows, "Wiggles," "Blues Clues" and "Fear Factor" and play with his Leap Frog learning videos. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Bunch-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Odie Nunley officiating. Burial will be in Elmhurst Cemetery. Mr. Bales moved to Guymon from La Junta, Colo., in the early 1960s. He was employed by the City of Guymon, retiring in 1994 as supervisor of the parks department.
